Extended absence Please advise the Student Manager in writing by note or . Contact Person Please contact Norma Cox, General Office on if you have any queries in regard to your child s attendance Student Attitudes to School Survey We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and we are conducting a Department of Education and Training (DET) survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by DET to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. This year DET has updated the survey to online, as opposed to the paper version which has run for many years. Also in 2017 it will now include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Students from our school in Years 7 to 12 will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way testing your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes only. Your child s privacy and the confidentiality of your child s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file. The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. No student can be identified in the results reported to schools or in any other report of the data. These results will be communicated to parents through College Council and via the Annual Report. Last year we used the survey results over several years to assist us in writing our new Strategic Plan ( ) and the 2017 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 22 May to Friday 23 June. The survey only takes minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. Please visit the Department of Education and Training website: VCE Senior Formal Friday 16 June To conclude and celebrate the mid-year, the college will again hold its annual VCE Senior Social. This year the senior social will be held at International Brighton (81 Bay Street, Brighton) on Friday 16 th June. The VCE Senior Social has been organised by a student committee in liaison with the Senior Program Managers, Laura Gerbing and Narelle Trippett. The Senior Social is a highlight of the student calendar and we have always been very proud of the exemplary conduct and presentation of our students on this special occasion. I am sure this will continue. As this is a college event ALL DET (Department of Education & Training) and college rules apply. Naturally consumption of alcohol and smoking are strictly forbidden and consequences on the evening and follow up back at the college will follow established guidelines. All students attending were given a permission form and acceptance of entry conditions, which was signed and returned to the college. This document clearly outlined the acceptable standard of behaviour. I trust that this will not be an issue and that all students will greatly enjoy the evening! The VCE Senior Social commences at 7:00pm and concludes at 11:30pm. Parents who are collecting students from the event are requested to arrive well in time for a prompt departure at the conclusion of the evening, mindful of the significant distance of the venue. Your consideration and punctuality would be greatly appreciated. Parents must arrange for the collection of students between 11:30 and 11:45pm. On several occasions, staff members have been left to chaperone students for up to 45 minutes after the social has concluded an unpleasant experience for anyone late at night, particularly in winter! Students who are not picked up by 12 midnight will be sent home in a taxi at their own expense. Further, students and guests are strongly advised to have a warm coat to wear to and from the social. It is to be remembered that the majority of senior students are under the age of 18 and therefore activities such as after parties are not endorsed by the college. Some licensed venues are only too willing to accept (and keep) deposits for such events but will not allow entry once they are aware of the age of the students. The wellbeing and safety of your child is of paramount importance and my recommendation would be that all students return to the family home following the social to a fully supervised adult environment. Tax Deductible Building and Library Funds As tax time is approaching, parents/guardians are reminded that donations to Vermont Secondary College s Library Fund and Building Fund are Tax Deductible and the College welcomes donations of any size. While we have received government funding for the new maths/science complex which will be completed by the end of the month, this funding will go towards the building itself. The college will need to provide the funding for furniture and science resources required within the complex. Direct deposits to: BSB ; Account No: , Account Name: Vermont Secondary College. Please use your child s student code as the identifier. All money raised is used to enhance facilities for your student/s. Receipts will be forwarded to you for tax purposes. Tony Jacobs Principal 2

3 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL S REPORT Suzanne Plant Harry Ruff Mike Stevens Congratulations Brigitte Ankenbrand We are very proud of our staff who contribute to education beyond our college, either at a network or state-wide level. Brigitte was presented with a Certificate of Merit by the Modern Language Teachers Association of Victoria (MLTAV) in recognition of her many years of exceptional and outstanding contribution to language teaching in Victoria. Brigitte is vice president of the Association of German Teachers of Victoria (AGTV), has convened the state-wide poetry competition since 2005 and hosts the regional final, has previously convened the VCE German committee, has been a VCAA assessor for German, and here at VSC teaches senior German and helps to coordinate our exchange program besides being a Stirling Student Manager in the Senior School. Congratulations and thanks, Brigitte! Students Leaving College Grounds All students are reminded that they are required to remain within the College grounds during school hours this includes all senior students, even Year 12s (unless their classes have concluded for the day). Unfortunately, a small number of students have chosen to ignore this directive and subsequent reminders. Subsequently, consequences possibly also including suspension will apply from now on. Year 7 Immunisations Round 2 The second round of Year 7 immunisations will take place on Tuesday 23 May. Senior Science Centre The Senior Science Centre is very close to completion and we are starting to order equipment and furniture. At this stage it is anticipated that the centre will be fully operational for the change of semester on Monday 19 June. Year 9 Assembly Last Wednesday, we held a level assembly for Year 9 students, firstly to brief them on the process for the upcoming NAPLAN assessments, but also to draw their attention to a range of concerns the school has about some behaviours exhibited recently by a small number of students in the year level. The school will continue to enforce College and community expectations, through a range of processes, including both proactive and reactive programs and interventions, student counselling, and a series of staged consequences if necessary. As part of this College response, all Year 9 students and parents were sent a reminder of College expectations by their Student Managers late last term, and this overview was followed up and reinforced by class SEL sessions (Social & Emotional Learning). In coming weeks, all students in the Junior School will participate in the Optus Digital Thumbprint program which aims to address issues of cyber-safety and responsible on-line conduct. We seek VSC parent support and involvement by discussing this with your child when you first provide them with a digital device, and then again from time to time as the need or opportunity arises. In coming weeks we will also commence the SOAR (Speak Out Against Racism) survey with students in Years 7-9, and all staff. The SOAR teacher survey seeks to gain insight into the opinions and experiences of teachers in NSW and Victorian schools in relation to racism and racial bullying, school climate (cultural diversity and social interactions), racial attitudes and diversity beliefs. The SOAR student survey seeks to gain insight into the opinions, experiences and behaviour of 3000 Year 5-9 students in NSW and Victorian schools in relation to racism and racial bullying, prosocial behaviour, bystander responses, health and wellbeing and school connectedness. Participating schools will receive an individualised report containing school- Continued PAGE 4 3

The project will help us understand: I. why and how often bullying and racism occurs in schools II. how these experiences affect students and the school community III. what schools and the community can do about it. Suzanne Plant Harry Ruff Other programs that the College employs or draws on to assist with both College and broader community issues include: our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program the Years 7 & 8 High Resolves program, and associated Leadership Development program at Years 9 & 10 the Safe Schools philosophy of equity and safety for all children the Respectful Relationships program (part of the Victorian Government and DET s response to the royal commission into domestic violence and related issues) The College leadership team and staff carefully select programs that we have identified as beneficial and relevant for our 1,420 students. We will provide more information about these programs over coming weeks. Contacting the School and Staff about Concerns Student Managers remain the primary point of contact for any enquiries or concerns. Teaching staff are best contacted via (see the college website or VEWS). Below is a summary of the contact procedure: Mike Stevens Raising Concerns The college encourages students to approach their class teacher and/or Student Manager directly about any concerns they may have. In line with the college s House structure, parents should raise issues with their child s Student Manager. The community member should telephone, or write to the college. Concerns can be raised in person, but an appointment must be made. For contact details for any staff member, call the college General Office on , or check the college website for staff addresses. Concerns from parents should be addressed to: the Student Manager about learning issues and incidents that happened in their class or form; the Student Manager or Head of House if students from several classes are involved; the Assistant Principal about issues relating to school policy, school management, staff members or complex student issues. The Assistant Principal may refer a matter to the college Principal where appropriate. If not sure who to contact, community members should address their concerns to Harry Ruff, the Assistant Principal responsible for Community Liaison, on or ruffh@vermontsc.vic.edu.au. 5 YEAR 8 REPORT Kelly Bruce - Hotham Year 8 & 9 Inter House Sport This week inter house sport competitions between the three Houses took place, in both netball and soccer. On Tuesday 9th May we had Hotham versus Stirling and on Wednesday 10th May Hotham versus Macedon and Thursday 11th May Macedon versus Stirling. Well done to all participants and their efforts on the sporting field! Ines Lehmann - Macedon Bill Duiveman - Stirling Year 8 City Camp As announced in the previous newsletter the Year 8 Camp in the heart of the Melbourne CBD is slowly approaching. Some highlights of this exciting camp will be an Etihad Stadium tour, a water fun session at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, a ride on the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, a tour of Victoria Market and some time to investigate a chosen topic in a small group setting. This camp will definitely be something to look forward to! The Term 3 Camp dates are as follow: Macedon July 2017 Stirling July 2017 Hotham 2-4 August 2017 Camp forms were handed out this week and the topic groups for the investigation will be put together in the order the preferences were submitted. This means first in best dressed. You will not have to pay for the camp straight away, but the medical form has to be filled in and the permission form has to be signed by parents in order for your request to be accepted. The topics to choose from are: Literature City Art Architecture Theatre Hidden Secrets Sport Science and Innovation Fashion Overseas Experience In the last holidays one of our Year 8 Macedon students, Abby Hingmann, took the great opportunity of traveling to Europe, representing Australia in netball tournaments. Abby s team stayed in London for five days before catching a ferry to France. She then competed in a tournament near Disneyland Paris, and her team who was the only team from Australia managed to win the competition and was able to bring home a big trophy. For the last two days the team went to see the sights in Paris before returning to Australia. Well done, Abby, and what a fantastic experience! 6 OXFAM TRAILWALKER 2017 Well That s Walkward Over the last school holidays, myself (Alex Nevins), Lauren Seymour, Laura Churcher and Kylie Reeves completed the Oxfam Trailwalker Challenge as team Well That s Walkward. This challenge involves walking 100km from Jells Park to Wesburn Park as a team to raise money for Oxfam. There were a lot of challenges along the way including blisters, migraines, sweltering heat on the Warburton trail, sever sleep deprivation (there were some hallucinations along the way) and a big thunderstorm in the last 15kms. While we won t be rushing back to do it again next year, we had a lot of fun in the training and on the walk, and were very proud to have raised $ for Oxfam. We would like to thank the Vermont School Community for their amazing support in the lead up to the event. Our fantastic support crew which consisted of fellow teacher Tracy Mills, Kathryn Binks, Brooke Allison and Jasinta Savage were invaluable. Without their moral support and amazing food preparation skills we may not have made it through. We would also like to thank all the staff and parents that either sponsored us or participated in our Trivia Night which was held at school last Term. The Trivia Night raised just under $2000 which was far more than we could ve anticipated. A huge shout out to Macedon House. Mr Henderson and his wonderful leaders raised over $1700 during the Macedon Community Focus day for our cause. It was an amazing effort and nice to have the school community behind us. Alex Nevins 6

7 PAST STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS - WILLOW SIZER Willow graduated from Vermont Secondary in 2013 and went on to study Music Theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts. This year is her final year and a number of very exciting opportunities have opened up for her. Willow has written her first cabaret 'Put the Blame on Mame' and it will debut on 24 & 25 June this year at the Melbourne Cabaret Festival, Chapel off Chapel. We are very proud of her achievements and also grateful for the support she received at Vermont Secondary College. Bookings can be made through the following website: Willow can also be found on Facebook at Alison Sizer Transcend time to an era of innuendo and titillation. Cabaret songstress Willow Sizer invites you to taste once again the exotic delights of a bygone era, where quips, witticisms and nuance thrilled audiences everywhere. The naughtiest songs dances and scenes of the 40s and 50s are remembered, dissected and recreated by diva Willow Sizer and her hot jazz trio. A homage to artists Marilyn Monroe, Eartha Kitt, Jane Russell, Rita Hayworth and Carmen Miranda. In an age of explicitness and overexposure, the most electrifying thing one can do is be subtle. 7

8 SPORTS REPORT AFL: Won! Next Round 18 July VSC beat Highvale SC, Glen Waverly SC and Mount Waverly SC convincingly. The only tough game was against Highale SC, being down by 2 goals at half time. After an impassioned plea by the coach in the break, the players responded magnificently, eventually winning by 3 goals. Mr Henderson is very proud of them. Kylie Reeves - Sports Co-ordinator BOYS SOCCER: Won! Next Round 27 July After playing a nil-all draw with Glen Waverley SC, losing 0-1 to Mount Waverley SC and defeating Highvale SC 10-1, the Senior Boys Soccer team made it to the Division final. We were up against Mount Waverley SC, the only team to defeat us during the Round Robin. A very close game was played between the evenly matched teams with few scoring opportunities. It came to the final two minutes when a penalty was called on the Mount Waverley goalkeeper. Fabian Wan was impeded in the penalty box and stood up to take the kick. The goalkeeper goes to the correct side and knocked the ball down! Fabian coolly followed up and scores off the rebound. We defend for the next three minutes and the game was ours. Congratulations to all players who for their contribution over the course of the day and we look forward to competing in the regional finals. GIRLS SOCCER: Lost Narrowly An absolute beautiful day greeted us for the Year 12 Girls Soccer Tournament. The first game we lost to Glen Waverley SC 2-5, however this game allowed us to see the potential for our game structure for future games: a draw with Mount Waverley SC and then a solid win against Highvale SC 3-1. Our record enabled us to play in the final against Glen Waverley SC, which we lost 4-3. Lucy Hende had many shots at goal but could not find the back of the net. Rebecca Toose was solid down back and Ruth Phun was solid in the mid field. Well done to all the players: R.Toose, T.Ow, L.Hende, E.Allen, X.Wright, C.Levett, R.Phun, P.Chiew, L.McIntosh, T.Nguy, M.Ferris, T.Shaw, C.Thomas and S.Ward. Many thanks to our coaches ; Mr Quinn and the Twerker, Mr.Duiveman. BADMINTON: Lost At the Senior Badminton Round Robin competition the Vermont A & B teams were all outplayed by the competitors. While the Vermont A teams for boys and girls were placed 3rd, honourable mention must be made of the strong performances by William Chau, Nathan Pan and Gloria Chen. Mount Waverley SC were the winners of the day following a heated final round against Glen Waverley SC. In the B team the girls managed to place second, a great effort considering all the games were played by Sophie Holliday and BreeArnn Lawrence. NETBALL: Won by a goal! Next Round 11 August Congratulations to our Senior Girls Netball team who played fair and pulled off a win by a goal. After a trying start to the day and some creative sizing for the new uniforms, the girls did a great job on the court. They were particularly proud to conquer the Mount Waverly SC team who has beaten them narrowly every other year they competed. Well done! Division Cross Country Report On Monday of this week 116 students went to Norton s Park to run 3 or 5 kms in the Division Cross Country. Congratulations to our Junior students (Years 7 & 8) who put in an amazing effort and retained the shield. Unfortunately, many Intermediate and Senior students who had signed up pulled out on the day and we came equal second in both the Intermediate and Senior competitions. The kids were fantastic on the day, very positive and supportive of one another and overall Vermont came second, which is a great effort in some inclement weather. The team for Region will be posted as soon as the final results come through from the convener. We hope to see you all back again next year! 8

10 Billie and Piper Bennett The Victorian Age Diving Championships took place at Aquanation, Ringwood and VSC students Billie and Piper Bennett were both entered to compete. Unfortunately, Piper s competition was cut short when she injured her neck during warm up before the first event. An ambulance trip to the hospital later, she was cleared of any serious damage, but was unable to compete. Billie, on the other hand, competed in the year girls 1m and 3m springboard events, as well as the year girls synchro event. Billie dived well in her first event, the 3m, to be placed 3 rd. In her favourite event, the 1m, she dived very consistently at a high standard and came away with first place! In the synchro event she teamed up with Sophie Westcott, and together they also achieved first place. With two State titles and a 3 rd place, it was a very successful event for Billie. SPORTS REPORT Continued Billie and Piper Bennett recently represented VSC in the School Sport Victoria Regional and State diving championships at MSAC. Piper competed in the girls springboard and Billie in the girls springboard. 13 LIBRARY NEWS Students and staff are working together to create one thousand stars by the end of term for the Stars School Challenge, part of the "One million stars to end violence" project. The stars will go towards a one million star installation that will be on show at the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth games. Students can make stars in the Library at break times or at SAFER meetings Thursday lunchtimes. Kerri Simpson Information Resources Leader - Library Stars School Challange Thanks to everyone helping us reach our target of creating 1000 stars for the Stars School Challenge, a campaign to raise awareness against bullying and violence. Happy helpers from our Digital Technologies Team on Open Evening Kerri Simpson Information Resources Leader - Library BOOK REVIEW CLUB Bzrk Origins by Michael Grant Bzrk Origins is a fantastic book in my opinion. The storyline is very strong and I was so engrossed in this book that I went to the library and would just sit and read. I was so sad when it ended. I generally can't wait for more books by this writer. I definitely recommend this to any people who like sci-fi books, futuristic or just a fun book to read. Reyna 7H3 Penelope Perfect: Project best friend by C Perry Penelope Perfect is a light hearted book with a very important message. Penelope Kingston loves everything in her life to be absolutely perfect. Her room, her toys and the way they face (by the window of course), everything. There was just one thing missing though. She didn't have a best friend. Luckily there is a new girl coming to Chelsea Primary. With the help of Grandpa George and Project Best Friend, Penelope is on the mission for a new best friend!!!
