1 Sat HERSCHEL PREPARATORY SCHOOL MUSIC LIBRARY PRE-PREPARATORY FOUNDATION INTERMEDIATE & SENIOR Message from our Head Dear Parents This week s assembly was led by Megan Florris. She spoke about a tool box and explained that if we had to make a cake or to build a bookshelf, certain tools would be needed. For the cake you may need ingredients, bowl, whisk and measuring cup. For the bookshelf you may need wood, sandpaper, measuring tape, hammer and nails. If you had to use the hammer to mix the cake, it would not do what it was designed to do. Or if you used the whisk to hit nails into the wood, you probably would not succeed, as the whisk was not designed to be a hammer. This is how God created us. God created us to be different and unique. No-one is the same: our appearances abilities and interests are all different. God created you for a specific purpose. God desires us to be who He made us to be and to not compare yourselves to others. The hammer and the whisk are completely different, and have a different purpose; this does not mean the one is more important than the other. We were designed to be different and unique. No-one is more or less important than the other. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. We all serve the same Lord. 2 School Closure Times Please note the adjusted school times for the final 3 weeks of the term, these are due to examinations and assessments. Although school closes at the times provided there will be staff in classrooms until 14:30 each day. Girls are permitted to remain at school until the usual closing time on any of these days. They can remain in the classroom until they are collected. Aftercare will be available as usual for the duration of Term 4. 3 Pre-Preparatory One of the most important events of the Grade R year was the evening of Tuesday, 7 November. The much anticipated annual Grade R Nativity production happened in the theatre with very proud family and friends watching. The girls all performed with confidence and sang with great enthusiasm. Mrs Bräsler practices the songs from the third term with both classes and makes sure they all know all the words to the songs. Mrs Moritz did the narration for the play. Mrs Codd and Mrs Brogan watched proudly as the girls all spoke with confidence and enjoyed their time on the stage. Foundation Phase Stars of the Week! Well done to our Grade 1 3 Stars of the week. 4 Grade 4 Camp Intermediate Phase With great excitement the Grade Four girls went on their first Herschel camp to Rocklands in Simons Town, on 2 November. They spent two days doing various team building activities, with the highlight definitely being tomahawk throwing and archery. The girls participated in a drumming session and played a variety of games. During their free time they swam and explored the campsite. A lot of fun was had by all. Thank you to the Grade Four teachers, Miss Karsten, Mrs Stakemire and Mrs Aubin for assisting the girls while they were away. We would also like to thank the parents who lifted us to and from Simons Town. Grade 5 Outing Grade 5 girls went on an outing to the old manganese mine in Hout Bay. This supported their studies on mining in Geography and their learning about rocks and soil in Natural Science. They had a lesson about the layers of rock whilst sitting looking out at Chapmans Peak. While hiking, they were able to identify the different types of rocks they saw. They investigated the properties of some rocks, this included smearing soft shale over their cheeks! Lunch was had at the entrance to the mine, followed by a walk into the mine shaft to see the old mine workings. We had a wonderful day out; the perfect mix of fun and learning! Page 4

5 Eco Club We held our last Eco Club for the year on Friday afternoon. A vibrant and enthusiastic group arrived from the Cape Town Environmental Education Trust (CTEET). They performed a puppet show illustrating the importance of water conservation. Thereafter, each girl had an opportunity to paint their own watering cans using plastic milk bottles. Cuttings were offered to the girls from a Spekboom bush for them to plant and take home. As the year draws to a close, we would like to extend our thanks to all of the interesting presenters that have enlightened and entertained our girls. We are sure that they have benefited enormously from the insightful input. Outreach Sandwich Drive The sandwich collection has dwindled since the class challenge finished and we're hoping to do increase the amount of sandwiches for the last three Tuesdays of the year. Each class is encouraged to bring as many sandwiches as they can to school on a Tuesday morning. These sandwiches must be made at home. Girls are requested to take their sandwiches to classes, where the class teacher will count the number of sandwiches brought to school. That total will be recorded each week. The class that brings the most sandwiches at the end of the term, Tuesday 28 November will win a prize. We look forward to your support! Page 5

6 Music The Grade 7 girls received their ABRSM external music examination certificates on Tuesday. Library Stocktake The Library is closed for the annual stocktake. Any parents who have some time available, please feel free to pop in to the Library and assist with shelving, covering and scanning. Your help will be much appreciated. Page 6

10 Our Grade 4 7 girls are all in the process of writing formal assessments and examinations at the moment. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all good luck and I am sure that all the hard work that they have done during the course of the year will be rewarded. I am so looking forward to Carnival next Friday. The girls are extremely excited. I have no doubt that it will be a truly spectacular evening. The planning and organisation behind the scenes is at a frenetic pace at the moment. I am so appreciative of all the time and energy that is put in by parents. Thank you! I look forward to seeing you all there on Friday, 17 November. I believe that this is a special time of the year. There is a sense of anticipation and excitement in so many areas.
