1 Activities and Clubs at Oneonta High School ART CLUB Mrs. Jennings, advisor Art Club is open to students in grades 9-12 who are interested in the visual arts. Art Club raises money for museum field trips and art workshops for the Art Club students to attend. Other fun and creative things that we participate in are pumpkin carving contests, creating artwork for other school needs, creating items to sell for fundraisers, gingerbread contest creations, and working to serve refreshments at the annual district art show. Active members are expected to participate in meetings every week and help with all fundraising events. Come to our first meeting in September. Creative and hardworking students are welcome. BLUE & GOLD GUILD (Drama Club) Miss Lishansky, advisor Membership in the Blue & Gold Guild is open to any OHS student who would like to participate in productions. No previous experience is necessary. There are several performances throughout the school year including, but not limited to: a play, musical, character education, and cabaret night. Auditions and meetings are announced and posted on the Call Board in the main hallway near the cafeteria. We also announce via the morning announcements, the school website, our district drama club webpage, and a Facebook profile. We do not only need students interested in acting, but also in working on the various crews such as tech (lights, sound), back-stage(set construction, costumes, makeup, props), and publicity (program design, advertising). Those involved in at least two productions may find themselves eligible to be inducted into The International Thespian Society (ITS). OHS is ITS Troupe ITS is the only organization that honors secondary school students for outstanding work in theatre and promotes the study and performance of drama at the high school level. International Thespian Society members receive Dramatics magazine, receive information on national conferences and workshops, and are eligible for awards & scholarships. Please friend BG Guild if you have any questions or concerns. BOARD GAME CLUB - Mr. DePauw, advisor Board Game Club meets once a week after school in the Library to play board games. We focus on a wide variety of modern games that are not usually promoted to the mass market. These games tend to encourage positive social interactions and usually contain many more strategic decisions than the more well-known games. Because of this, the games provide enrichment for students in the areas of history, geography, economics, math and long-term strategic planning. Examples include "Ticket to Ride, Sentinels of the Multiverse, and 1812: The Invasion of Canada." All OHS students are welcome to attend meetings. BOOK CLUB Mrs. Jennings, advisor Book Club is open to students in grades 9-12 who have a love for reading and like to discuss the books they have read. Members meet every two weeks at lunch. Typically, the members choose a genre of books (such as Science Fiction, Mystery, or Best Sellers) and then everyone reads something from that genre before the next meeting. At the meeting we discuss the books we have read for the chosen genre while we eat lunch and enjoy baked goods, and then pick a new genre of book before the meeting is over. In the upcoming school year we would like to try to plan more events, such as a "read-a-thon" or going to see books that have been turned into movies. We would also like to explore doing some community service, such as reading with elementary students in the after school program. All book lovers are welcome! THE ECHO Mrs. Murphy, advisor The Echo is the OHS school newspaper. To create our paper, we need students interested in writing and editing articles, taking photos and drawing clipart to accompany articles, selling advertising, and doing computer layout, etc.! Please see Mrs. Murphy or listen for announcements in the fall about general interest meetings if you'd like to be involved. If you would like to sell advertisements, pick up some advertisement price sheets at The Echo table in the cafeteria tonight. We sell ads all summer.

2 ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB Mrs. Labroo, advisor Students interested in all things environmental from animal rescue and rehabilitation to green energy to conservation check out the Environmental Club! The club organizes environmental events throughout the year, hikes, engages with expert speakers, and helps the school be green. Environmental Club is open to anyone grades 9 12, and meets Fridays at lunch in the French Room. FILM CLUB Mrs. Jennings, advisor Film Club is open to students in grades 9-12 who are interested in creating films and entering those films in Film Contests. In the upcoming school year, we will be exploring making different types of films, such as stop motion, animation, and live action. Members are expected to attend weekly meetings at lunch and come to our monthly "Open Studio" night, which is designed to give students a block of time that they can use to work together to create their films. Film making is a collaborative effort and students who join must be able to commit to coming to the Open Studio nights, as well as putting in extra time on their own when needed. Active members participate in meetings every week, come to Open Studio, and work on at least one film project each semester. Only active members are eligible for any field trips or workshops we go to. Come to our first meeting in September! Creative and hardworking students are welcome. FRENCH CLUB Mrs. Labroo, advisor Membership in the French Club is open to anyone at OHS who is interested in the French culture. The purpose of the French Club is to promote cultural awareness of Francophone countries. The club meets on Mondays during the noon-hour in room 217. In the past we have had a pétanque tournament, celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving, winter festivals, Crêpe Day, played games, discovered new music and taught French in the after school program. In 2017 we will be offering a four-day winter trip to Quebec City in February and a NYC day trip in May. Please see Mrs. Labroo for more information. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA - (FBLA) - Mrs. Harrison, advisor Future Business Leaders of America is open to all students in grades 9-12 who are in or have completed at least one business course (including keyboarding and Freshman Seminar). The goals of FBLA are to develop and strengthen the confidence of students and create more interest in the world of business. At OHS our FBLA club meets on Thursdays during lunch. We go to two local competitions each year, usually during the school day. At the Spring competition, members compete in various business exams with other district members for trophies and the chance to advance to the state level. In April, members may choose to attend the three-day conference. Feel free to contact Mrs. Harrison in room 218 to find out more or join us at our first meeting in September. HIGH SCHOOL DEMOCRATS Mrs. Lamb, advisor High School Democrats is a chapter of the national organization High School Democrats of America and is open to any student in grades 9-12 who is interested in finding out more about current political events and how they can get involved and make a difference! We meet during lunch in Mrs. Lamb s room (301). We are a new club and always looking for new members! Our club just formed in April 2017, so we have not had many activities yet. Some ideas we are discussing for the future include hosting various speakers at OHS, field trips to Albany, NYC and Washington D.C. to find out more about the political process, organizing and participating in rallies for causes that are important to our members, and supporting Democratic political candidates. This organization is powered by student ideas and causes that students are passionate about. Join High School Democrats and make your voice heard!

3 LINK CREW Mrs. Lutsic, advisor Link Crew is a national organization for juniors and seniors who are interested in helping with freshman transition to high school. Link Crew s purpose is to help freshmen feel more comfortable as they move to high school and to help them achieve success in their first year as high school students. Sophomores and juniors may apply for a position on Link Crew in the spring for the following school year. Qualities sought out for Link Leaders are kindness, respectfulness, friendliness, reliability, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to help change the culture of high school where students can sometimes be unkind to each other. These positive role models promote kindness and respect throughout the school. Teams of two or three Link Leaders mentor a group of freshmen through their first year at OHS. NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY Mrs. Jennings, advisor National Art Honor Society is a club created to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding artistic ability and have taken a leadership role in the visual arts. Students must be in their second year of art courses and maintain at least a 90 in those courses to be invited to join NAHS. Students are inducted in their junior or senior year. Once in NAHS, students are expected to maintain a 90 average in their art courses and an average of 80 overall in their non-arts courses. The three tenets of NAHS are art scholarship, character, and service. NAHS strives to aid members in working toward the attainment of the highest standards in art areas, as well as performing community service in the arts. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Mrs. Beal, advisor National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes juniors and seniors who have shown outstanding character, leadership, service and scholarship qualities. Juniors and seniors who have an average of 90 or better will be eligible and must fill out an information sheet by September, including listing school/community activities. The induction ceremony is in the fall each year. Even though juniors and seniors are the only students eligible for this club, your participation in activities, attitude in and out of class, and the initiative you take in your freshman and sophomore years can influence your eligibility for this organization. Students in NHS participate in the Dollars for Scholars phonathon which raises money for scholarships, fundraising activities such as the concession stand for basketball games, and various community activities throughout the year. Meetings are twice a month. NATIONAL SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY (Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica) Mrs. Lamb, advisor National Spanish Honor Society is a brand new club created to acknowledge students who have shown outstanding ability in the Spanish language as well as interest in the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and language learning in general. Students must be in grades and enrolled in Spanish 3 or higher. Students are inducted in the spring semester and need to never have failed a Spanish class and have had an average of 90 or better in all Spanish courses since Spanish 1. Once inducted into NSHS, students are expected to maintain an average of 90 or better in Spanish courses and 80 overall in all other courses. National Spanish Honor Society members must display high degrees of Spanish scholarship, character and service. OHSan Mr. Hecox and Mr. Moussa, advisors The OHSan is the Oneonta High School yearbook. We can always use people to help sell ads, fund-raise, take pictures, write copy and layout pages. Starting yearbook as a freshman gives you an opportunity to learn the computer programs and layout so that when you are a senior you will be prepared to take a leadership role in this most important publication! RAINBOW CONNECTION - Miss Lishansky, advisor Rainbow Connection is a club that focuses on individual identity as well as making our school a more accepting and safe place. All students and staff are welcome; members of this club to celebrate diversity! Safe Space training (once a quarter), Cinema Sundays (once a month) and a trip to NYC are some highlight events for RC members. Please friend RC Lish if you have any questions or concerns.

4 SERVICE CLUB - Mrs. Sisson, advisor The Service Club is a fun way to get involved in local, state, national, and international activities and events. Members learn more about themselves while participating as part of an active team. Club members are involved in Homecoming Weekend, The Pit Run, The Haunted Halloween Hallway, American Red Cross Blood Drives, Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, Recreational Activities for Residents at Robynwood, Leadership Conference, the Kalabankoro Project (supporting a school in Mali), and selling shamrocks to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Additional activities are always encouraged with suggestions from club members and/or members of the community. This is your opportunity to make school what you want it to be: a wonderful, memorable experience. Weekly meetings keep this club active, involved, and organized. Join us. Join the fun. See Mrs. Sisson if you are interested. SPANISH CLUB - Ms. Orlowski, advisor íbienvenidos! Welcome to the OHS Spanish Club! Our mission is to meet new people, learn about Hispanic culture and promote cultural awareness. You do not have to speak Spanish to join the club! May 29, 2018, our club is planning on a trip to Proctors Theater to see the Broadway musical, On Your Feet, the story of the life of Gloria Estefan, and go to a Hispanic restaurant. During February break, 2018, our club will venture to Cusco, Peru and visit Machu Picchu for the week. It will be our first trip there. Mr. Mills, OHS Global teacher will chaperone the trip and give mini lessons on the Inca Empire in the fall of 2017 for those interested. Throughout the year, our club will focus on fundraisers such as selling Christmas poinsettias, having theme bake sales, and looking for sponsorship for our February, 2018 trip to Peru with Prometour. Annual highlights also include participating in the Haunted Hallway, the SADD Run water station for community service credits, and a Day of the Dead event at Fiesta. We will even design a group t-shirt which we will proudly wear. Officers are elected annually in September. Meetings held every Thursday during lunch in Room 302. New members and ideas always welcome throughout the year. SPEECH AND DEBATE CLUB Mrs. Hardison, advisor Are you looking for a way to distinguish yourself? Speech and Debate Club is open to students in grades 7-12 who are interested in expressing their public speaking skills and competing in both local and regional competitions. Participants are able to choose events that best suit their personalities, from debating to presenting a humorous or dramatic piece to be judged. Events include writing and performing your own piece, individual debate, partnered debate, and impromptu speech. Students at the top of their events will have the opportunity to compete in a National Competition held around the country. Meetings occur after school with snacks, or during Lunch, and competitions are held around the area on Saturdays. STUDENT COUNCIL- Mrs. Rossi, advisor Student Council is an organization which promotes the general activities of the school and a voice for student concern. We organize events such as the Haunted Hallway, canned food drives, dances, talent show, and Spirit Week. Officers are elected in the spring and the rest of the membership is open to all. Meetings are held once a week during lunch. If you are interested in issues which concern student life at OHS consider joining Student Council. STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS (SADD) - Miss Lynch, advisor The goal of our SADD club is to provide students with the information to. make healthy decisions. SADD organizes both the SADD Run and the After Prom Party. Meetings are Fridays in room 225.
