7 Ethos and Aspirations At Farlingaye we aim to provide a school environment which is welcoming and supportive and to create a caring, working atmosphere which will enable students to reach their full potential intellectually, spiritually, ethically and physically. Farlingaye recognises the importance of the individual, values all its students equally and strives to ensure that they have the opportunity to experience success. We publicly acknowledge their achievements with pride. Farlingaye fosters good relationships between students, parents, staff, governors and the wider community. Community development is a strong feature of our work. We expect a high standard of behaviour and aim to encourage a sense of responsibility in our students, not only for themselves, but towards everyone with whom they are in contact. All staff are committed to improving the quality of learning for all students within a framework which recognises the uniqueness of the individual and the interdependence of all. 8 Code of Conduct In Farlingaye we believe everyone has the following rights:- the right to be safe; the right to learn; the right to be treated with respect. The one rule which applies to all of us in school is: Everyone will act with courtesy and consideration to others at all times. This means that: 1. You always try to understand the other person s point of view This means you should have tolerance of each other s strengths and weaknesses, regardless of gender, race, disability or age. You avoid upsetting other people verbally, physically or through technology. 2. In class you always ensure that others have the right to learn. This means: prompt arrival at the start of each lesson with everything you need; beginning and ending the lesson in a courteous and orderly way; listening carefully and following instructions; helping each other when appropriate; being quiet and sensible at all times. 3. You move quietly around the school. This means: keeping to the left in corridors and on stairs; being ready to help others by opening doors, offering to carry things and letting others pass; never running, barging or shouting; queuing sensibly and quietly at the Bus Park. 4. You always speak politely to everyone. This means: saying Yes, Sir or Yes, Miss when the register is being called; saying Please and Thank you when asking for something; avoiding shouting as it is always discourteous. 5. You keep the school clean and tidy so that it is a welcoming place of which we can all be proud. This means: putting all litter in the bins even when it doesn t belong to you; looking after the rooms by keeping walls and furniture clean and unmarked; taking particular care of wall displays; taking care not to damage the trees and plants in the grounds. 6. 11 Clubs and activities Farlingaye High School The school is very active both at lunchtime and after school and many of our students take advantage of the clubs and activities organised for their benefit at these times. As well as a wealth of sporting activities there are vocal and instrumental groups, dance and curriculum related clubs. Many of the clubs are so popular that there are separate clubs for different year groups with some activities reserved for Year 7 students only. The start times and names of organising staff are published for students at the start of each year and all students are encouraged to take part. We pay for late buses on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to enable all students to join clubs. 12 Ofsted Report In April 2013 the school was visited by a team of Ofsted inspectors who looked into every aspect of the school. The Ofsted report is available on the internet or from the School Office. It was fantastic, with the school being designated outstanding in every area of the school. Here are a few quotes:- Pupils make outstanding progress because teaching is excellent at all stages throughout the school. Standards are well above average by the end of Year11. Pupils make outstanding progress from a broadly average attainment on entry to the school. Pupils are keen to take part in the wide range of musical, dramatic and sporting activities out of school time. Relationships are excellent. Pupils support each other in lessons and are considerate to each other in and around school. Teaching is usually fast paced and challenging. The great majority of lessons provide activities that ensure the most able pupils do extremely well, and that pupils who learn more slowly are well supported to help them achieve as well as they can. Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make excellent progress. Support staff encourage pupils to work independently or with other pupils, and to solve problems themselves. These pupils become confident in using the skills they gain. The Headteacher provides outstanding direction for the school to maintain its strengths and to eliminate weaknesses, however minor. She is exceptionally well supported by all other leaders and staff. Visits to universities, field trips, drama and art events, and several residential trips all support and enrich pupils learning. Along with activities and exceptionally good displays in school that highlight are, science and literature, they also promote pupils spiritual, moral, cultural development extremely well. Students in the sixth form behave outstandingly well. Their attendance is above average. They have extremely positive views about the school. Teaching in the sixth form is outstanding. Teachers have excellent subject knowledge. They have an extensive knowledge of how well each student in their classes makes progress and what they need to support their learning. 12

13 School Uniform As well as giving a sense of belonging to the school, uniform is also important in helping to establish a good working atmosphere. Our uniform is chosen to be practical and affordable and we are reliant on the support of parents in ensuring that all students are appropriately dressed for school. Excessive jewellery should not be worn. Two rings and one necklace may be worn. Where ears are pierced, only two small earrings/studs per ear are allowed (These may have to be removed on occasion for safety reasons.) Nose studs must be covered with a plaster; studs in other pierced body parts must not be worn in school. Students will lose their free time if they have studs and may be excluded from lessons. Make up (including nail varnish) should not be worn. Exotic hairstyles and colours are not suitable for school and the Headteacher s decision on what is suitable is final. This includes shaven hair, shaven hair with patterns in it and bright coloured hair. A coat must be worn rather than sweatshirt type tops. Denim and leather coats and hoodies are not acceptable. Trainers cannot be worn. The Headteacher has the right to decide if any style or item of clothing, or hairstyle, is inappropriate for school. 14 Highlights of the School Year The school is always a busy and exciting environment with a wealth of opportunities for our students. Certain events of last year stand out and give a flavour of the breadth and variety of work carried out in school. We had five great music evenings including two lovely choral concerts with the primary schools. Our Super Rock Evening saw 24 student bands performing to over 700 students and raised 2000 for Miles s wheelchair. Language trips to France and Germany, Ski trip, trip to Iceland, trip to Ecuador, as well as international trips during Activities Week enabled over 400 students to travel abroad. To support and encourage students there were residential study days for 270 GCSE students in addition to our mentoring programme for Year 11, our mini achievement schemes in the Lower School and over 60 revision clubs. A large congregation of students and parents enjoyed the Christmas concert at St Mary s Church, Woodbridge. We had a fantastic Reflection and Resolution! Focus Fortnight, with lots of special events, guest speakers, trips and activities in October, including a beautiful Centenary Evening of song, dance, drama and prose. Year 9 and Year 12 students performed outstandingly in The National Bar Mock Trial competitions with the Year 9 team winning the Suffolk heat. Over 100 Sixth Formers trained as Buddy Mentors to support younger students and some were then selected as On Track mentors. 26 Year 10 students were trained as aunts and uncles to support the new Year 7. The Art, Photography and Textiles Exhibitions provided the opportunity to display a stunning collection of A level and GCSE art and photography work. Year 11 and Year 13 students looked wonderful at the Leaving Proms at Manor Farm and ITFC. The curriculum was enhanced by over 80 trips including visits to the Tate Modern, Mountfitchet Castle, Duxford, The Science Museum, Tate Gallery and Colchester Zoo. Several theatre trips took place to promote the Drama and English curriculum. Our School Experience Morning for Parents gave over 40 parents a valuable insight into school life. Over 100 students took part in a sponsored 12 hour Readathon raising over 2000 for charity. A Business Enterprise Day was held at BT for all students in Year 9 - all dressed in smart office clothes! They raised 600 for charity. Our Activities Week ran successfully in July offering students a choice of over 30 exciting trips. Events included the music tour to Venice, trip to Borneo and cooking trip! 14

15 More than 200 students across the school were involved in our productions of Little Shop of Horrors and Our Day Out. The school s fantastic Charity Committee raised over 6,000 for a variety of charities. This included discos, cake sales, Year 7 cake competition and non uniform days. We raised 18,000 in 10 weeks to support Miles, a Year 9 student who needed a new wheelchair. Our PTA (called FHSF) organised some great events including a Dance Night, a quiz night, a fashion show and Craft Fayre raising over 6,500. Year 9 had a Maximise your Potential Day to help their learning. All Year 11 students enjoyed a week s Work Experience placement. Students represented the school at National and Regional level in a variety of sports. Others gained individual recognition for their achievements at national level. Over 60 students were involved at county, regional or national level. Over 100 students took part in Cross Country Events, with 25 reaching the Suffolk Finals and 8 reaching the National Finals. Sixth Formers attended UEA and other universities, helping them plan for their future in Higher Education. We successfully entered students in numerous Maths and ICT competitions. Our Year 12 Young Enterprise Group competed well in the East Suffolk Cup, winning two awards and running some great activities. Duke of Edinburgh saw 104 Bronze students, 38 Silver Students and 17 Gold students all successfully complete the expedition phase of their award. All students are now working hard to complete the final stages of the award. 15

16 Provision for Sport A wide variety of sport is offered during lesson time and extra-curricular practices including: Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Football, Cricket, Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Dance, Running, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Rounders and Tennis. The time allocated to each activity varies, but in KS3 (Years 7-9) each student will receive five hours a fortnight of PE. In Years 10 and 11, each student receives one 100 minute session per fortnight. Students are encouraged to specialise and follow fewer activities to greater depth of performance and understanding. Over 75 students in each year group follow a GCSE PE course. We also offer A Level PE. Students are encouraged to join local clubs where matches are played at weekends to enhance the inter-school matches played during the week. Practices of the major activities occur regularly during the lunch hour, with clubs, open to all, taking place after school. Inter-form tournaments are conducted in a variety of activities and these are often planned and carried out by Sixth Form students studying the AS PE course. Students have also planned and organised 5-a-side Football, Netball and Athletics tournaments for our Partner Primary Schools. We run junior and senior sports leadership schemes. Students with special talents are encouraged to attend County trials in their specialist sports and we have County footballers, netballers, swimmers, cricketers and athletes at the present time. Parents/coaches who show an interest in sport at FHS are always welcomed and encouraged to join in. The school has a sports hall, gym, well equipped fitness studio, dance studio, two football pitches, two rugby pitches and a grass hockey pitch. A grass cricket square is available during the summer term. There are six tennis courts and four netball courts. Our sporting curriculum and range of sporting extra curricular opportunities provide all students with ample involvement in a wide variety of sport. Our key aim is to ensure that students participate and enjoy all aspects of sport to encourage its development both within and beyond the curriculum. 17 Admissions Procedures The school has its own protocol for admissions for compulsory aged students. For admissions policy 2016/17, please refer to the school website. The Governors have agreed a PAN of 297 students for years 7 to 11. Complaints Procedure School governing bodies are required to have in place a procedure for dealing with complaints. It is expected that all complaints will be referred to the school in the first instance. In situations where it has not been possible to settle a complaint through this process parents can refer the matter to the Education Funding Agency or Ofsted. The Governing Body has recently adopted a revised Complaints Procedure, details of which can be found on the school website. Parents/Carers should note that it is the wish of the Governing Body that the school deals with all complaints quickly, effectively and as informally as possible. We encourage all parents to let us know of any concerns they may have. We have a commitment to try to solve all problems. Parents who have any general concerns should make an appointment with either the tutor, Year Co-ordinator or a senior member of staff, as they see fit. 19 Summary of A Level examination success 2015 An excellent year with a pass rate of 99%. 60% of grades were at A*/A and B level (excluding AS). 20 of our students achieved at least two A* grades. We had an excellent average point score of 960. Our average exam point score per entry was very high at 224. 24 AS Results 2015 All our students take four or five AS levels in Year 12. They may drop one of these after the AS examinations. Many decide to retake modular papers during Year 13 and those students who continue a subject to A2 never cash in their grades. For these reasons it is impossible to publish final AS results that we would consider to be accurate.
