NEWSLETTER ISSUE: 1718 November 17th 2017 Phone: Fax: Web: Gisborne Secondary College values respect, diversity, innovation and achievement. Through a wide range of learning opportunities, students develop fulfilling and independent lives. STUDENT PROFILE Kale McQuade On the 27 th of October, one of our talented young filmmakers, Kale McQuade of Year 9, was involved in the 2017 International Youth Silent Film Festival. To be specific, Kale was a finalist at the film festival, which gives young filmmakers an incredible opportunity to meet international filmmakers, directors, producers and actors by creating their own silent film. Kale and three of his friends from other schools in the Macedon Ranges, all aged years old, took it upon themselves to create an amazing short film. The science fiction themed film, which focused on the idea of time travel, was short-listed, as one of the top films in the state of Victoria was a finalist in this competition. Kale and the others that were involved in the film were invited to the historic Astor Theatre in Melbourne to have a formal viewing of their film, along with the other finalists. Both Narelle Cocks and myself had the honour of being invited to the event. Kale s film was a stunning short film. It was the only film of the top finalists to feature the use of both colour and black and white film and was written and directed beautifully. It displayed Kale s talent for media and film, and most importantly, it received the Audience Choice Award; over 400 audience members voted on their favourite film of the evening, and Kale s film took the honour of being the most popular film amongst the masses.

Image: Flyn, Kale, Will and Joshua Here is what Kale had to say about the experience: In June this year, my friend Flynn Mazza and I decided to enter the International Youth Silent Film Festival. Entries for the film festival all had to be roughly three minutes and include music provided by the festival as the only audio to be used. Entries also had to include text at the start, middle and end of all films as an opening title, text somewhere during the film and credits at the end. For 7 weeks, Flynn and I met up every weekend to plan the film together. We went through many different drafts of the script until we were finally happy with a plot. This process took quite some time, as we wanted the story to fit well with the music. Our film was set in 1940, so we went out to Op shops and found costumes and props that fit the era. For one scene, we transformed an entire room in my house with a 1940 s style interior. We completely emptied the room of everything that was previously in it. Then my dad managed to pick up some great old looking props at auctions and garage sales, as well as filling the room with things we already had. Next, we went location scouting around the pine plantation in Woodend and looking for some old-looking houses in Kyneton. By the time production came around, it was late September. We filmed on two consecutive Sundays, at our four filming locations. Production ran smoothly, even though I was feeling sick with a horrible headache for the entire first day of shooting.

We submitted our film, and after one gruelling month of waiting, we were accepted as one of the 17 NSW and VIC regional finalists. All of the 17 finalists films were shown at the Astor Theatre in Melbourne two weeks ago. The top three finalists from each region then got the opportunity to go to the global award shows next year in America. Unfortunately, our film didn t place in the top three, however, did win the award of the Audience choice award. It was an amazing opportunity and we will definitely be submitting again next year! 5 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear families I celebrate the wonderful news that the postal vote on same-sex marriage returned a resounding yes this week. I hope the legislative work now quickly supports the important message to our young people that they are valued and have equal worth regardless of their sexuality, orientation, belief or background. Congratulations to the many second year VET students in Building & Construction, Engineering, Automotive, Creative Digital Media, Technical Sound Production and Beauty who in the last week or so have completed their VET courses. We are incredibly proud of our Vocational Education & Training program at Gisborne SC, and I would like to acknowledge the huge work of our VET teachers in supporting these young people to achieve their learning goals. Over the last two months we have been hard at work on the development of 2018 s new Senior School Program to support Year 10 to 12 students with learning, engagement and pathways through their time in the senior school. The program, which will operate at each year level two periods per week will include space for learning study habits, supportive work practices, engagement activities, tutorials and lectures outside of normal class time, whole school SACs, practice exam sessions and more. These programs will be fully planned, and attendance and assessment will be carried out. Participation in these programs will be a requirement for a Year 10 pass, as the content will be very closely linked to the capabilities domains of the Victorian Curriculum ethical, critical and creative thinking, personal and social and intercultural. At Year 11 and 12 they will directly support the VCE and VET program with more academic / course readiness and preparation. Next our Year 11 Students will have their Year 11 exams, with a Transition day for all Year 11 VCE and VET students into their Year 12 classes on Friday 24 November it is critical that your young person is in attendance. Last month we received our 2017 Students Attitudes to School Survey Results, and we are very proud. In 2012, our results were very low 82% of the results were in the bottom quarter of the state, and all of them were in the bottom half. Over the last five or six years we have lifted these results year after year, and in % of the results featured Gisborne SC in the TOP quarter of the state, with only self-regulation and goal setting falling below the median. Andrew, Tracey & Judy

FROM THE STAFF The state of men s health is in crisis. Men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50. Three quarters of suicides are men. Poor mental health leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. That s one every minute. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing this health crisis and it s not being talked about. The Movember Foundation is uniquely placed to address the crisis at a global level. We are funding ground-breaking programs all over the world, engaging with men to understand what works best, to help make change happen sooner. In 2016 Gisborne Secondary College raised $620 towards the Movember Foundation and we aim to beat that in 2017! Will you help us? You can donate through the link below or at the GSC front office: = $620 RAISED 2017 =? We are working toward a world where men and boys take action to be mentally healthy and well, and are supported by their friends, family and community during tough times. Help is out there: Thank you for all your support!

THE STAFF GSC SKI and SNOWBOARD Camp 2018 early expressions of interest. Most families will be aware that traditionally this camp has been for our year 9 students, however that changed this year and the camp has now become a senior school camp, focused mainly at Year 10 with yr. 11 s invited to boost the numbers if we can t fill the camp with year 10 students. Next years camp will run from 13 th to 17 th August This is a fabulous camp and we always have many students wishing to return the following year. A couple of weeks ago we released information to all year 9 students about next year s camp and asked for expression of interest forms to be returned to the money window, and thank you to those who have already done so. We deliberately release information early as we recognise that the cost of the camp is relatively high, and advising families early allow them to budget for the camp, it also means that families who choose, may enter into a payment plan to make attendance at the camp for their child more achievable. If your child has not yet submitted an expression of interest we will sending out a message with a copy to all year 9 families so please have your child submit it to the money window, and if you would like to setup a payment plan please contact the finance office. If you require any further information please don t hesitate to contact myself of Ms Bridgewater by at mcrae.darren.e@edumail.vic.gov.au or bridgewater.sarah.s@edumail.vic.gov.au ALL students are welcome to attend supervised catch-up/homework time, Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the library.
