4 FREQUENTLY USED TERMS Engineering Diploma Engineering Degree The Engineering Diploma is the academic equivalent of the first two years of your engineering degree. Students may complete the Engineering Diploma at Dalhousie University or at one of our Associated Universities (AUs). The Engineering program at Dalhousie offers two options: Bachelor of Engineering (4 years) Bachelor of Engineering with Co-op (5 years) Co-op Co-operative education (Co-op) in the faculties of Computer Science, Engineering and Science is based on the principle that an academic program combined with work experience in alternating terms, is relevant to and desirable for effective professional preparation. Work term employment, which varies by sector and location, enables students to acquire experience in their areas of career interest, while academic terms are devoted primarily to fundamental and theoretical studies. These practical experiences and academic studies complement each other. Students apply to the co-op program in December or April of their second year. The work terms begin September, January or May of the third year, depending on the engineering discipline. Students must achieve an engineering GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.3 or better and complete all required courses in their first two years of studies to be admitted to Co-op. The GPA requirement of 2.3 must be maintained to continue in the Co-op program. For more information, visit: Discipline Choice Dalhousie Engineering offers several discipline options (or specialties): Chemical Engineering Civil Engineering Electrical Engineering Environmental Engineering Industrial Engineering Mechanical Engineering Mineral Resource Engineering These disciplines also have sub-specialties. Details on the discipline choice process are included in this package. More terms can be found here: important-terms.html

5 A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome and congratulations. I am looking forward to seeing you this fall. As you know, mathematics will be an important aspect of your engineering program. All first year engineering students are required to take entry level calculus courses and are designed to prepare you specifically for engineering courses, and introduce many engineering modeling ideas, so that your second-year engineering performance will be strengthened. Since these courses are pre-requisites for most of the courses in engineering, it is important that you give these courses priority when planning your studies. If you have any doubt about your mathematics ability, I suggest you to contact the College of Continuing Education for specialized mathematics courses during the summer of More course information is available on their website at: These courses will help you to prepare, and will increase your probability of success. There are many opportunities for you to become involved and stay connected. I believe you will enjoy our program and the engineering community here at Dalhousie. Our team of faculty and staff work closely together to help you All of our programs are fully accredited through the Engineers Canada Accreditation Board and are recognized all over the world. I wish you the best as you begin your engineering studies. to get the most out of your time here at Dalhousie. There are seven engineering disciplines for you to choose Best regards, from and you will have plenty of opportunities to explore your options before you apply for your discipline at the end of your first year. I encourage you to participate in the activities related to discipline choice to inform your Dr. George Jarjoura, Ph.D., P.Eng. Director, Core Program decision. The more you learn, the better you will be situated to make the right choice for you.

6 Frequently Asked Questions What type of student succeeds in engineering? The enthusiastic, dedicated student who has good math skills, an appreciation of the physical sciences, and a good work ethic is most likely to succeed. What types of engineering programs are available at Dalhousie University? Programs are offered in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Mechanical, and Mineral Resource. Within these programs, it is also possible to further specialize in Biomedical, Computer, Water Resources, Petroleum, Mining, Materials, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, Ergonomics, Electronics, Power Systems, Infrastructure, Operations and other areas. Are your programs accredited? All Dalhousie Engineering programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. When do I have to apply for my program, and are there any restrictions? In the winter term of their first year, students apply for their programs of choice. Those with an engineering Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.3 or higher are guaranteed their first choice of program. The remaining students are ranked by first year GPA, and in this order are given their best choice until a particular program is full. If I am not sure which area of engineering to choose, is help available? Each year there are lectures, seminars and open house activities where first year students can see what type of work each engineering program involves. Students also have the opportunity to visit and speak to faculty and students within the various programs. How large are the classes in engineering? First year classes can be as large as 450 students in the lectures, but are subdivided into smaller groups of no more than 60 for tutorials or labs. In later years, class size will depend on the program of choice, and may vary from 10 to 140 students. Most classes average students. How long is the engineering degree program at Dalhousie? The BEng program is eight or nine academic terms, plus optional co-op work terms: a four-year program without Co-op, or a five-year program with Co-op. Do I need a computer? Yes every engineering student needs a computer, preferably a laptop. We recommend you buy the most RAM and fastest CPU you can afford minimum RAM 4Gb, minimum CPU Intel i3 or equivalent. You can choose the operating system you are most comfortable with (Windows, Mac OS or Linux). The engineering design software works only on Windows, but you will be given a MS Windows license to install on your computer. You will also have MS Office and other development software for use on your computer. We provide licenses for all the software you will need in your engineering program. Are there Graduate Engineering programs offered at Dalhousie? Yes, see the Graduate Studies FAQ on the Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering web site: engineering.dal.ca

7 Frequently Asked Questions (continued) When does Co-op start? Students apply to the Co-op program in December or April of their second year. The work terms may begin in September, January or May of the third year, depending on the program. For more details, visit: engandcompscicoop.dal.ca How do I qualify to do Co-op? Students must achieve an engineering GPA of 2.3 and complete all required courses in their first two years of studies to be admitted to Co-op, and must maintain a 2.3 CGPA to continue in the Co-op program. For more information, visit: engandcompscicoop.dal.ca Does everyone get a co-op job? Historically, there have been more co-op jobs available than students to fill them. Your success will depend on your grades, experience, ability to sell yourself, and willingness to relocate. The Co-op office provides training in résumé writing and interview skills. Because co-op jobs are secured through a competitive process, however, the university cannot guarantee a co-op position for every student. How much can I earn through co-op? Pay scales vary by discipline and may increase as the student progresses through the three work terms. The 2015 range was $600 - $1125 per week for a week term. For details by program, visit: engandcompscicoop.dal.ca What is the starting salary for an engineering graduate? According to the 2015 Engineers Nova Scotia salary survey, the average salary for an Engineer in Training in Nova Scotia was $59,550 (first four years after graduation). The range from lower to upper quartile was $55,000 to $65,000. Higher salaries are available in some program areas and/or job locations. The average salary of a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia was $101,955. See Salary Survey at engineersnovascotia.ca for more information and survey updates. Is financial support available for engineering students? Yes. In addition to the general Dalhousie University scholarships and bursaries, there are many scholarships and bursaries exclusively for engineering students. All engineering students entering third year with a cumulative engineering GPA above 3.85 will receive a scholarship if they apply. Visit: moneymatters.dal.ca for more information.
