1 A Ministry of Green Point Baptist Church Newsletter of Green Point Christian College Mrs Debra Walls Principal Technology Technology is part of our world, and we need to ensure that we teach our children to rule over it, rather than the other way around. Both as parents and teachers, we need to help our students develop a healthy ethical engagement with technology. In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. The Bible trains us in righteousness, and remains absolutely useful for all of life. As committed Christians we need to embed God s Word in our hearts and realise that we are all created in God s image, and recognise this spiritual aspect of our lives as vital to who we are in Christ. Therefore, we need to be masters over the technology that we use, and to realise there are good and bad aspects about what it offers. What we will find with technology is a range of programs and applications that can support, not only our knowledge and understanding of Scripture but we can also listen to podcasts and engage with the Bible through well-known Godly men and women. These applications will inspire our engagement with the Word of God. Likewise, we will find many health and academic programs that we can use to support our physical and educational development. Fitness programs, Maths and Reading programs that embrace a new way of learning. Even messaging and texting have the potential for supporting and uplifting, for encouraging and building up. Part of the goal of education is to guide students to make choices that support their belief in a living God choices that embrace and support the values and ethics of the Bible. As a learning environment we want to continue to work with parents and carers to support our young people in understanding the impact of technology and to train them to use technology to build up and hearten others. The way we as parents and teachers engage with technology is a crucial witness. We hope you can join us being a parent is hard work and the more we share with each other and become aware and intentional about the values we foster in our families, the more we are able live and support our children and grow our relationships. Proverbs 3:5-6 Have you ever read Proverbs and wondered how its insight transcends the bounds of time and culture while making relevant statements demonstrated in human nature? It is remarkable. Often a verse can be read over several times and each reading reveals developing appreciation for God s wisdom. Through this verse we gain an understanding of the worthy aim to trust God entirely with our total being and forsake doing anything in our own strength. Our ways are flawed and often self-seeking, therefore to trust God and have our paths directed by Him is entirely comforting. Miss Gourlay shared her story with our children through the truth of this verse. It was a privilege and a blessing to follow Miss Gourlay s journey from a Kindergarten student here at GPCC, to mission fields, to university and back to GPCC as a teacher. Our real encouragement came as we directly observed through a series of photos and accompanying unfolding events, the way God has directed her path as she learned to trust in Him. What a great God we serve. Operation Christmas Child Tomorrow is the last day to donate a Christmas box. Our goal is to donate 500 boxes to this wonderful cause. It is such a good opportunity to teach our children that we can give to others from our abundance. Some of us will not be able to assist, but many of us can, so let us dig deep and reach our goal. Mrs Davis is currently enquiring, that hopefully we can have another week for collection. We will keep the children posted if successful in gaining extra time. Looking forward to participating in this venture together. Kindergarten 2015 Orientation Today our Kindergarten Orientation Program was held at Narara Bike Track. We had a large gathering and while the children gleefully rode around the track, parents got to know each other a little better over a cuppa and cake under the trees. Congratulations to all children who chose to participate and did so exceedingly well. It is wonderful to note so many children excited by mathematics. Canine Education The engaging Dog Safety Awareness program again this year provided sound education for our K-2 children by educating them to be safe around dogs. It was impressive to see the serious little faces echo back to the presenter safe practices and good choices. Why not reinforce correct procedures with your child by asking them to demonstrate how to safely approach a dog. Shoe Issues Unfortunately many children are still wearing sport shoes with their dress uniform. Please stop your child from receiving a Time Out for uniform default by checking their uniform in the morning. Together we can make uniform uniform.

3 Junior School News Electives Just as we predicted electives proved to be a highlight of the week for many students. I do not believe that I have seen the Primary students move as quickly all year as the pace they moved after the lunch bell when they headed to their chosen activities. It actually is gorgeous to witness their joy. Electives again this Friday! Year Information Evening An Information Evening for parents of Year 2 students going into Year 3 in 2015 will be held next Tuesday 28 October at 7:00pm in the Staff Common Room. Note: If there is a joint/dual custody situation, a student is eligible for subsidised travel from both parents addresses, subject to approval from the NSW Department of Transport. 4 4 Secondary School News Uniform Uniform is again a major focus of what I wish to look at this week. We as a College have a very clear Uniform Policy which is set for all students. I have had a number of conversations where I am asked why we are making an issue if a student is not abiding by the policy. Interesting when asked why it is a big issue for that same student just to wear the uniform as listed in the policy, there is not a reasonable response. The uniform is to be worn as specified in the diary and is a choice of disobedience by a student if they do not adhere to that policy. That choice, as do all choices, has a consequence which will be administered according to our Discipline Policy. There are a number of areas that I would like to highlight in the policy that must be sorted out immediately by students. In the end if a student chooses not to abide by the expectations of the College then their position at the College will be in jeopardy. Skirt Length: The policy states that it is a Taupe skirt, touching the knee. All girls must wear their skirts at a length that touches their knees. If it is rolled up they must unroll it. If the hem is too high they will be expected to let the hem down so that it touches the knee. If the skirt cannot be worn correctly then a new one of the correct length must be purchased. Shirts and Ties: Boys are to have their ties up and shirts tucked in. The wording in the policy is White short sleeve shirt NO logo - to be worn tucked in and Compulsory red tie with crest. Jewellery: Girls may wear the following: One pair of sleepers or studs in the lobe - Students are not to have visible piercings except the one in each ear - other studs are to be removed during school time One fine chain (under blouse not visible) One silver or gold ring No bracelets Boys may wear the following: One fine chain (under shirt not visible). 5 Secondary School News Japan Study Tour 2014 From September, twenty students from Years 10 and 11, accompanied by Mr Wheeler and Mrs Mitchell, participated in the College s 2014 Japan Study Tour. The tour was undertaken to give students an introduction to Japan and Japanese culture, to strengthen our already strong Sister School alliance with Shizuoka Kita, and to provide them with a week of language immersion. Week One was spent travelling around Japan on planes, buses, ferries, ropeways and bullet trains. We spent time in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima. Highlights of our travels included live sumo wrestling, modern skyscrapers, ancient castles, shrines, gardens, disaster simulations, mountains, volcanoes, rivers and oceans, dancers, musicians, ninjas and swordsmen, arts and crafts, monkeys and deer, and of course a day at Tokyo Disneyland. Special mention must also be given to the many opportunities for amazing shopping and even more amazing eating out! Week Two was spent in Shizuoka city with students, staff and families from our Sister School, Shizuoka Kita High School. Students and staff were billeted with Japanese families and experienced real Japanese home life and language immersion for eight days. Strong friendships were formed and language skills developed greatly. The program for the week at school was action packed, including daily Japanese language lessons, calligraphy, art, language exchange, sports, some great views of Mt Fuji and excellent bento lunches every day! We were also lucky enough to be present for and participate in the school s annual Sports Festival Day. It was a terrific cultural experience and so much fun. The tour was a great success and will be run again in Our students are now looking forward to seeing their friends again when Shizuoka Kita make their reciprocal visit to Green Point in March next year. Praise God for providing each student and teacher with this awesome and valuable experience and for blessing each one of us with good health, immense safety and protection and for the precious friendships formed that will last a lifetime. Year 10 Swimming PDHPE Year 10 students have received a note outlining the details for the upcoming Aquatics Unit. The unit is compulsory for all students. Students will be competing in a number of swimming activities at Gosford Pool on the following dates during their normal practical lessons: Wednesday, 22 October - Recess and Period 2 Thursday, 30 October - Recess and Period 2 Wednesday, 5 November - Recess and Period 2 Senior Courses Textbook Sale The Textbook sale will be on 13 November 2014 in CAPA5. 6 6 Missions and Service Mr Tom Anderson Co-ordinator of Spiritual Development Acts 1:8 and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Central Coast Student Volunteer of the Year Award Congratulations to Aidan Morley (Year 10) who won the 2014 Central Coast Student Volunteer of the Year Award. This Award was presented at the Central Coast Leagues Club last Tuesday afternoon, attended by Mrs Lucy Wicks, Federal Member for Robertson. Aidan has a real heart for serving others, inspired by the College s trial of the Community Service Log last year. Aidan has been volunteering for four hours a week at Hammond Care in Woy Woy. He volunteers in the Dementia Unit, which provides a high level of care for elderly residents. Aidan is involved by assisting the workers by talking to the residents, calming them down, and helping them with their evening meal. The residents often do not remember who he is, or mistake him for a member of the family, yet this does not phase Aidan. He continues to love and support the elderly he meets and shows considerable compassion and patience. When asked about the experience, Aidan says: It is good and eye opening. Sometimes the residents are very out of it. Helping them makes me feel good within myself, knowing that I have helped and made a difference in their lives. Aidan is an outstanding example of a young person in our community seeking to show God s love to others. He has also been involved in service at the Coast Shelter Restaurant in Gosford and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. Aidan is now a finalist for the NSW Student Volunteer of the Year Award to be given at Kirribilli House in Sydney in December. Well done! Operation Christmas Child - Boxes Due This Friday! A reminder that all Christmas Boxes are due in by this Friday (24 October). Junior School students should hand their boxes into Mrs Harris or Mrs Davis. Secondary School students should give them in to Reception or to Mr Anderson. Thank you for your support in sharing the love of Christ with children in need overseas! 7 7 Missions and Service Charleville 2014 In Term 3, a team of twelve boys from Year 9 travelled to Charleville to work on properties in the Charleville district. This is the eleventh year our College has partnered with Frontier Mission Services providing help to local farms. The students who participated in the Charleville Link are to be congratulated on their outstanding behaviour and willingness to undertake any job given to them despite the warm, dry conditions. We would also wish to thank the property owners of Boatman, Marlee Downs, Glenorie and Tongi for their hospitality during our stay. We also extend our thanks to Mr John Case from Frontier Mission Services for his assistance in planning the trip. The team: James Allan, Brendan Chatman, Matthew Fadhul, Fergus Henderson, Reiley Horton, Connor Jones, Kyle Nash, Jayden Nicholson, Jesse Sandeman, Nathan Swaine, Harrison van Vliet, Reece Wallace, Matthew Forrest, Mr Chris Haines, Mr Brian Shaw, Mr John Forrest and Mr Matthew Rosee. The best part of going on the trip to Charleville, was helping the farmers to achieve some jobs that they wanted to get done. Though it was hard work, it was very rewarding. After a long day of work, it was good to sit around and get to know the boys and the teacher that was on my farm better. We had an epic Uno game that was on every night while we waited for dinner to be ready. A special memory was learning how to drive a car and learning some basic farm maintenance skills with limited resources, showing us how to be creative and making use of any resources that are on hand. These made us aware of how lucky we are. We also got to see and appreciate how harsh the environment is to plant and grow any vegetation and how hard life on the land can be. By Nathan Swaine After the two day bus trip to Charleville, Reiley, Jayden and I arrived at a farm named Tongi. We got there at around 7:15pm and found out that we were going to sleep in a caravan type thing swarming with moths. The next day we walked about 6-7km in the sun, taking wire off a fence that needed to be taken down. That was the easiest day we had, because we had a two hour break before having to shovel some sand and gravel into a ute. The next day was probably the hardest because we had to shovel dirt around troughs so they didn t fall over. Each trough took about 40 minutes to complete, we managed about eight troughs. On the third day we had a bit of a sleep in before having to do some work on a building. We had to scrape paint off the walls with wire brushes, wash of the remaining paint and then repaint it. After that we got to do some shooting practise, which was fun. That evening, we were invited into the house for dinner and to watch TV, which happened on the two nights after that as well. On the final day we got to do some more troughs, thankfully we had the help of a tractor. On the way back to the farm that evening we saw a shooting star, which was actually just space junk. At the farm there were six people, two Irish people and the farm owners, Murray and Kylie. They had two children, a 4 year old named Harry, and a 2 year old named Billy. All in all I would say that it was a great trip and recommend it to everyone. By Fergus Henderson

8 8 Sport News CSSA Biathlon Last Friday, Nicholas Stewart, who is a keen swimmer and runner, competed in the first CSSA Biathlon at Penrith. It was a lovely day for a 300m swim and 2km run, and Nicholas did a fantastic job. He found the course challenging though very rewarding once he had crossed the finishing line. Congratulations to Nicholas who is our first Junior School GPCC athlete to compete in a CSSA Biathlon. PSSA Athletics Monique Beckett is a name I am sure you have heard before. She is a fantastic Netballer, assisting the GPCC team win their Grand Final at the start of this term for the GPCC Club. She loves competing at Soccer, playing for the school team and is a strong defender. She is one of the toughest Basketball players to represent GPCC, showing great skill and stamina. She is a superb Shot Put thrower, making it to the CIS Athletics Carnival, after amazing performances at the School Carnival, Zone and CSSA. Monique has again proved to be one of the best female athletes that we have had in our Junior School by reaching the PSSA Athletics Carnival for Discus. She competed last Wednesday at Homebush for the CIS Team and threw sensationally! She threw over 27m for another PB, putting her in the top 20 of her event (there were 40 competitors in her age group on the day). This is such a wonderful performance for an amazing girl who is a great ambassador for the sport. Congratulations to Monique for her fantastic achievements in the many areas of sport that you have competed in. I cannot wait to hear of your accomplishments for CSSA Cricket Knockout Round One Last Thursday, our Senior Boys Cricket Team played in the first match of the CSSA Cricket Knockout Competition against Berowra. The team was looking very strong, with some experienced cricket players ready to demonstrate their fine form. GPCC was sent in to bat. David Spragg and Oliver Drennan played confidently and sensibly, getting their eye in early. After losing an early wicket, they again cemented their position, scoring freely and easily, moving to 1/58 after 10 overs. At the end of the 20 overs, GPCC had notched up one of their highest totals in many years, scoring 135. Knowing that 135 was a great total but wanting to stay on the attack, Liam Brettoner (Captain) decided to open with some strike bowlers. Isaiah Brettoner, Nicholas Stewart and Oliver Drennan brought a lot of spark and pace to the attack, not to mention great accuracy. The accurate pace attack continued with more impressive bowling from David Spragg, Jesse Drennan, James Linnet, Evan Mereau, Bryce Lace, Mal Wells, Kane Masters and the Captain himself, Liam. Check out some of these impressive bowling figures: Name Overs Runs Wickets Isaiah Oliver Jesse Liam In the end, Berowra was only able to manage 41 runs in their 20 overs due to this relentless bowling and great fielding. It was a sensational win by the boys and congratulations to all of them. I must say how impressed I was with their great attitude on the day, how proudly they represented their school, and the professional captaincy by Liam (supported by Nicholas) who chose both the batting and bowling order. Now to Round 2 CSSA State Triathlon Mr Nathan Lambert Hannah Read (swim), Carinya White (bike), Isabella Jones (run) and Liam Ferguson all had a great day competing at the CSSA Triathlon on Friday. The girls did exceptionally well to come third in the Secondary Junior Girls Triathlon Team Event. Hannah gave them a great start by coming out of the water fourth, and between them Carinya and Isabella managed to move forward another place. Liam found the start challenging in the Secondary Junior Boys Individual Event, with over thirty boys jostling for positions to start the swim. He managed to come out of the swim at the back of the front pack, then made his move forward in the bike and run legs to finish fourth overall. After this drinks session, David and Nicholas continued to bat superbly, with David finally retiring on 50 n.o. and Nicholas on 21 n.o. The team continued to dominate the pitch, with more amazing batting performances by Liam Brettoner (29 n.o.)

9 GPBC News/College News Xplode is a Kids Club Program which happens each Thursday afternoon during school term. For an afternoon of fun games, afternoon tea, craft, songs, Bible talks and more, come along on Thursday afternoons from 3:15pm - 5:30pm in the Jacaranda Room. Fair Trade Down Under - Friday 24 October 2014 Christmas is just around the corner and you are invited to a fair trade shopping experience! We are hosting a Fair Trade Down Under shopping event on Friday 24 October 2014, in the Church Office Function Room at 7:30pm. Fair Trade products make a difference in the lives of people less fortunate than ourselves. By no fault of their own, many in our world are disadvantaged, disenfranchised, dispossessed, disempowered, displaced, disabled and desperately poor. Fair Trade projects around the world have been set up where people are empowered to produce incredibly beautiful items, unique and diverse in style, materials and design. These artisans work in fair conditions and are paid a fair wage, hence the name Fair Trade. These projects give dignity, empowerment and an income. Come and experience the stories behind the items, learn about how we can participate in making the world a fairer place and shop to empower the poor and marginalised. Uniform Shop With the exception of uniform appointments previously made on 12 and 19 November, the Uniform Shop will be closed on Wednesdays. Prayer Music Tutor Evening Thursday 30 October 2014 CAPA Theatre 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm (Junior School 5:30pm - 7:00pm and Secondary start immediately after) The evening will feature Piano, Bass, Guitar, Flute, Trumpet, Trombone, Drums, Vocal and Saxophone students all involved in our busy tutoring programme at school. Prayer puts life into a proper perspective and increases faith. Our small prayer group has experienced this, as we have met every week to lift up GPCC before God in prayer.
