1 B R A N D O N VA L L E Y M I D D L E S C H O O L The Lynx Prints A s the temperatures are rising and the snow has melted, these are sure signs that spring is in the air. We are into our second week of our fourth quarter at BVMS and this is a very busy time for both students and staff. 8 th Grade: Message from the Principal Mr. Thorson This time of the year also is the starting point for many activities. I would encourage both students and parents to keep school a high priority and to work hard to finish the year strong. Make sure that some time gets set aside for schoolwork. April and May are testing months, and you will find information below regarding testing at BVMS. Also, as the weather is turning warmer and clothing is changing, I would encourage parents and students to help the school out in following our dress code regulations. Have a great April!! Middle School Testing Information The 8 th grade students at BVMS will be participating in two statewide tests. The test that has been scheduled is the South Dakota State Test of Educational Progress (Dakota Step) Science Test. We are scheduled to take this test April This test will be taken during the student s actual Science class. The Smarter Balanced Test will be administered on April (ELA test) and April (Math test). The students will again be taking these tests in their respective ELA and Math classes. 7 th Grade: The 7 th grade students at BVMS will be participating in statewide tests. I have provided some tips on how to prepare your student for the upcoming tests. Please feel free to contact Mr. Thorson with any questions at How to Prepare Your Child To Take A Test REST. Get a good night of sleep before the test. EAT a good breakfast. LISTEN carefully to the directions given for the test and follow them exactly. If the directions are not clear, ask the teacher to repeat them. TRY TO DO your best and do not give up. Parents: Here are some things you can do: DISCUSS. Help your child understand that the testing gives him or her the chance to show what he or she knows about a subject. SUPPORT. Ask your child to maintain regular study habits. RELAX Students who are calm and sure of themselves do better on tests. 5 Page 5 Looking Ahead to Next Year 1:1 Computer Initiative At the last Brandon Valley School Board meeting, it was unanimously approved to implement a 1:1 technology initiative in the middle school beginning next year. All middle school students will be provided a laptop with a protective sleeve. All students will have to complete a Digital Citizenship workshop at the beginning of the next school year before the devices will be handed out to the students. We will provided further information and details as we get closer to next school year. We are excited about this technology initiative and it will be a great addition to our middle school.
