This report describes the school and its setting; provides information about the school's administrators, teachers, students and facilities; summarizes progress made based on the school's improvement plan, and reports student achievement results along with other vital signs. Description Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle serves grades 6-8 in Kaua i District's Central Complex. The rural student population is ethnically diverse, drawing from the Koloa, Lihue, Kalaheo and Hanamaulu areas. Learning is grounded in standards-based education with an emphasis in literacy (reading, writing, math, science) and technology. The school embraces the middle school philosophy with balanced curriculum based on the needs of young adolescents; exploratory programs; interdisciplinary teaming; balancing the academics with the affective; and advisory programs. The addition of the X-Block provides students with additional support in Reading, Math or enrichment. Critical to instruction is the balancing of formative assessments that monitor daily student learning with summative assessments that assess achievement of the standards. The school is working towards making interdisciplinary units that are relevant, rigorous, and build positive relationships among students, staff, families, and community. 3 Status and Improvement Report Year -08 Summary of Progress Improvement Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle received a mid-term Accreditation visit from the Western Association of s & Colleges (WASC). The visiting committee shared the following progress: Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle is proud of the work and accomplishments it has achieved in the last several years. Despite challenges with teacher turnover, changes in curriculum expectations, reporting documents and school improvement requirements, the school has capitalized on its people and resources to facilitate success for its students. Student proficiency levels on the Hawaii Assessment have increased noticeably and the school has met Adequate Yearly Progress. The school s retention rate consistently does not exceed 1% and behavior data falls within Positive Behavior Support guidelines. The learning community is confident it can continue to raise student achievement, meet AYP goals, produce motivated learners, and bring increasingly added value to the CKMS students learning experience. This commitment to a student centered curriculum clearly shows in their implementation of the X Block which truly honors the middle school principle of exploration while at the same time services the learning needs of struggling students. Implementation of the X Block is respectful in its choice of offerings for adolescents, deliberate in its use of data for student placement, and commendable for the extraordinary time requirements it places on the school staff. The review committee makes no addition recommendations. The school has taken seriously its commitment to ensuring all students are adequately prepared for life s challenges. The school has kept the community informed and involved in the education of its children. The professional staff is supported in its effort to provide high quality, rigorous, relevant instruction to children through meaningful professional development and mentoring to enhance instructional skills that ultimately leads to student success as learners. The staff has done an excellent job of assessing its needs and determined a course of action they will pursue over the next several years. They clearly recognize what they need to do to make a good school even better. The Academic & Financial Plan guides their planning and instructional practice. Continued data-driven focus will not doubt enable them to provide the sound standards-based instruction the students rightfully deserve.
