VOLUME 11, SUMMER , Issue 7 Gladesmore Community School, Crowland Road, London N15 6EB. : In June this year, forty Year 10 Gladesmore students of Spanish and French took part in our second RALLY project meeting at Gladesmore, along with forty students from our two partner schools in France and Spain. The students involved spent three days working on language projects related to story-telling, future plans and aspirations. The week started with an original performance by professional story-teller Sally Pomme-Clayton, which led to students from the three different countries working together to produce their own performance for an audience of students, teachers and guests. They also had an opportunity to reflect on the collaborative work they had been doing on Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl which each school had read in their own language. They visited inspirational venues in Central London, like the Bank of England, Mansion House and H.M.S. Belfast. They had a real opportunity to improve their communication skills and build on the links they have established through written correspondence and Hangouts video calls. We look forward to our return visits to Spain and France in the autumn term. For up to the minute information, logon to the GCS website where you can find out about: Dates for Parents/Carers Events School trips The curriculum Emergency Closures (snow, power cuts etc).

Gladesmore Post Page 2 We have been approached to resurrect our EVERYB DY DREAMS campaign and re-release our chart topping single. The aim being to launch it London wide to show a positive side of our capital in contrast to high knife crime statistics and the tragic events at Westminster, London Bridge, Finsbury Park and Grenfell Tower. Our campaign has four strands: To record a charity single and produce a video: EVERYB DY DREAMS LDN with schools across the London area. We have joined forces with a number of London schools including Crowland Primary, Seven Sisters Primary, Highgate Independent and Urswick in Hackney and have completed the first phase of recording. Phase two will reach out to other schools with the view of having a completed single ready for release in the Autumn term. Guinness World Record Challenge: To get as many people in one place(2kv two thousand voices) to do a synchronised performance of EVERYB DY DREAMS LDN and achieve a world record. Flash Mob Performance: To recreate the Gladesmore School EVERYB DY DREAMS YouTube Flash mob in central London. There is Love in my Hometown Social Media Campaign: Our campaign will show as the lyrics in the song state: there is love in our hometown and we are setting our Gladesmore family three challenges for over the summer break to support our Autumn term launch: To join and encourage friends and family to join all our Social Media platforms: Facebook: Song4London Twitter: Song4london, Youtube: Everybodydreamsgcs We are looking for photos of people showing love and kindness along with stories of love within our community. When the London terrorist attacks and Grenfell disaster happened, what overshadowed the hurt and pain was the love people had for each other and we want to share this. We are also looking for Celebrities and Community Champions to be photographed holding our logo. We would also love them recorded saying who they are and what they do and ending by saying: London, Everybody Dreams. Updates will be on our social media pages and the Gladesmore website. Please support. More details available from; Ms Coley: jcy@gladesmore.com or Mr Lowe: tle@gladesmore.com.

Gladesmore Post Page 3 Congratulations to the boys in Year 10 who supported a fundraising drive to help two young chefs from London publish a Caribbean cookbook. The boys, with the support of their English teachers, Ms Coley and Mr Thompson raised 300 and they invited Craig and Shaun McNuff into school to collect the funds. The cookbooks are now on sale through Amazon or your local bookstore. Make sure you buy a copy and check the Thank you credits at the back of the book because all the boys who fundraised have been given a name check in the book. The Art Department are hugely proud to announce that the work of our talented Year 9 artists has been selected for Public Display in the William Road Gallery in Euston. Students responded to the question What does a better Tottenham look like? We are very grateful to John McAslan and Partners for affording us this opportunity. The work of Tasin Sayed was selected to be on the official gallery poster advertising the event!

Gladesmore Post Page 4 The Art Department were delighted to take a Group of our Year 10 artists to experience the Tate Modern Art Gallery on London s South Bank, beside the River Thames. Students had the opportunity to spend the day studying artworks by some of the world s most famous painters and sculptors including Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. This will inspire their GCSE work in the future! Haringey has lots of free and low cost activities for a variety of ages. To download a pdf of the Summer Fun 2017 brochure go to: haringeygovuk/files/ holiday-fun-summer-2017.pdf For most of the activities you can just turn up on the day, but for some you need to register in advance. Contact details and information about booking is shown in the pdf.

Gladesmore Post Page 5 Each year a number of our Gladesmore Year 11 students are given the fantastic opportunity to continue their educational journey at prestigious private and state boarding schools around the UK. Working in with The SpringBoard Bursary Foundation and the Hope in Tottenham organisation, the selected students are awarded full scholarships. SpringBoard transforms the lives of children in the inner city through awarding them full bursaries at state and independent boarding schools. Hope in Tottenham is a community based local charity that has been established to serve the needs of children and young adults in the London Borough of Haringey. Well done to our former Year 11 students who after being awarded scholarships to private boarding schools have successfully made significant contributions there. Congratulations to Tiana Thompson-Taitt and Gurjeevan Singh who attend Bradfield College and will be starting the new academic year as Heads of their house. Congratulations also to Yaade Joba who attends Rugby School and will be starting his new academic year as Community Action Levee. And finally, a special well done to Gladesmore Head Boy 2016, Yuriel Kpalobi who won the prestigious Millfield 'Bunce award'. This is Millfield school s top award and is awarded to one student each year for academic efforts and significant contribution to school life.

Gladesmore Post The Year 7 students finished off their SHINE@Gladesmore Saturday programme in style with a fantasticly exciting, nail biting dodgeball competition! The atmosphere was electric and the final went into extra time to determine the winning team. Congrats to Ms McKenna s Shine tutor group for their amazing win and all students for creating a warm and very funny event. The programme has now finished for the year and preparations are underway to welcome our Year 6 students. Summer school runs from th Monday 24 July to th Friday 4 August, and we look forward to seeing you all there. Many thanks to our fantastic parents and carers for your continued support of this programme we really couldn t do it without you. We wish you all a happy and sunny summer holiday. Page 6

Gladesmore Post Page 7 On 16 th June 2017, Gladesmore Community School participated in The Great Get Together. This is an event which encourages community cohesion by celebrating all that we have in common. The event was inspired by Jo Cox (MP) who was murdered on 16 th June Students and staff showed their support by accessorising their uniform and clothing with gingham (the logo of The Great Get Together ) and thoughtfully discussing the issues raised by the event. We also celebrated what we have in common by participating in a music quiz and learning more about others through a game of Find someone who..

Gladesmore Post Page 8 By learning an instrument as a child it is proven that: It improves academic skills It develops physical skills It cultivates social skills It refines discipline and patience It boosts self-esteem It introduces children to other cultures By learning an instrument your child will have the opportunity to play music with other students. This could include performing in one of our school assemblies as well as training and performing with our choir, rock and pop bands or our wind and string bands. How the lessons work? The lessons are subsidised by Haringey Music service. Each lesson consists of a 20 minute one to one individual session with an external instrumental specialist. Students will be taken out of lessons on a rotated timetable so they will not miss the same lesson twice. What instruments do we offer? We have a full range of instrumental lessons to choose from. The most popular instrument choices are the piano, vocal coaching, electric guitar, classical guitar and drums. We also offer a wider range of instrument choices; please refer to the application form for the full range. How much does it cost? Lessons are charged at 107 per term for 10 x 20 minute lessons. If you receive free school meals or income support you only have to pay 27. Once your child is accepted onto the instrumental scheme the school will invoice you for payment. We would never want the cost to stop any child from learning an instrument. If there are issues regarding affording the lessons please contact me directly at school at tle@gladesmore.com or alternatively call the office. Instruments Pupils must have an instrument which they can use to practise with at home. In many cases you will be able to hire an instrument from us. If this is not possible you will need to provide your own. If you would like to sign up please fill in the application form and give it to Mr. Lowe (Music Teacher).

Gladesmore Post All students in Year 6 and 7 were lucky enough to benefit from a visit by the Betty Bus. The Betty Bus aims to spread knowledge and understanding of periods and the menstrual cycle amongst both boys and girls. The girls attended a workshop on the bus which combined learning about the biological aspects of menstruation with advice about how to handle the emotional and physical effects. The boys workshops focused on developing empathy. Both girls and boys were very positive about the workshops saying that they found them both fun and informative. The workshop leaders were extremely impressed by the enthusiasm and maturity of all students involved in the workshops. Page 10

Gladesmore Post Page 11 In April twenty students from Years 9 and 10 joined our Spanish link school, CES Azorín, for an educational visit to Paris and to our link school, Collège Irène Joliot-Curie in Argenteuil. Students undertook project work in groups studying careers and work opportunities. They visited local businesses and interviewed employees about their roles in French, then they produced a career's fair which was visited by parents and the local mayor and his team. Gladesmore students represented the school well and worked hard in their groups modelling good independent work skills and creativity. The groups visited le Musée des Arts et Métiers, la Tour Montparnasse, they also visited many tourist sites, did a boat trip along the Seine and ate in a variety of restaurants in the evenings. There are spaces for the next visit at a cost of 140 for a five day visit to Paris from 11th to 15th November, staying in a central 3* hotel, all meals in local restaurants, transport and activities included. Please see your Languages' teacher for a letter. This visit is part-funded by the European Union Erasmus+ scheme - RALLY.

Gladesmore Post Page 12 Each academic year, Gladesmore nominates a number of students to receive a Jack Petchey Achievement Award. These awards are given in recognition of outstanding individual achievements, such as bravery, overcoming a personal challenge, volunteering or helping others over and above expectations. This year, nine Gladesmore students won this prestigious prize. Each of the award winners received a framed certificate, a Jack Petchey membership card, a pin badge and a congratulatory letter from Jack Petchey himself! Winners are also awarded 250 to spend on something of their choice that they feel will benefit the school and that many others students will benefit from. This year Our Jack Petchey winners spent their money on new books for the library, new easels and pottery wheels for Art, even new Director s chairs for Drama, to name a few! Also this academic year, Miss McKenna was awarded a Jack Petchey Leader Award for her patience, kindness and commitment. Miss McKenna was awarded a 750 grant, which she decided to spend on laboratory equipment for future Science experiments. On Tuesday 20 th June 2017, all of our award winners along with their guests were invited to attend the annual Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards. The evening was an opportunity for all award winners from across Haringey to come together and celebrate their achievements and receive their Achievement Award medallions. The evening was a fantastic one, with performances from three Gladesmore students; Tyriek and Earl performed Lay me down and Kevin performed Moonlight Sonata. WELL DONE!

Gladesmore Post Page 13 This term, two lucky Gladesmore students, Hayriye Budak 10JWS and Omar Mohammed 10JWS, had the unique opportunity of doing a week s work experience with the National Crime Agency (NCA). Whilst working during their placement, our students got to experience a forensic science workshop, paid a visit to the National Police library in Sunningdale and also took part in a missing person s bureau workshop. Our students were required to complete an assignment during the week which they then had to present to their colleagues on the last day. Our students had a fantastic time and received very positive feedback. Hayriye even won the prize of student of the week from the NCA. Well done Gladesmore!

Gladesmore Post Page 14 The Team London Young Leaders project is designed to encourage schools from across the London Borough of Haringey, to work together to design and run their own campaign that would benefit the local community. This year, Gladesmore s Young Leaders have been working in partnership with students from Tetherdown Primary School and Fortismere School to raise awareness and encourage a better understanding about bullying and its effects on mental health. Throughout this year, our Young Leaders have held a non-uniform day at Christmas, a cake sale during the Spring Term, and selling raffle tickets for prizes during the Summer. On Wednesday 28th June, all three schools come together to host their final event, a tea party, with the aim of encouraging others to open up and talk about mental health. Our Young Leaders have raised a grant total of from their events which will make a real difference to Young Minds, the UK s leading charity committed to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people. Our Young Leaders and all of us at Gladesmore would like to thank you all for your help and support throughout this academic year. Thank you!

Gladesmore Post Page 15 The Transport for London Youth Travel Ambassador (YTA) Project is a youth-led programme for secondary schools that can make a difference to the transport issues affecting their local school communities. This is the second year that Gladesmore has been part of the YTA scheme. This year, our YTA s surveyed a sample of the school community on travel issues that affected them on a daily basis. From the 318 surveys sampled, pedestrian road safety was the biggest concern. Our YTAs researched, developed and discussed ways in which they could raise awareness of pedestrian road safety for our students, and explored the reasons why this was an issue for our school. They realised there were many factors which affected a student s ability to make a judgement about their safety when crossing the road, such as listening to music and using their mobile phones. With this in mind, throughout the academic year our YTAs organised a variety of initiatives. They encouraged our PSHE department to invite in The Riot Act to show an interactive drama production called Deadly Distractions to our Year 7 students, they spoke in year group and whole school assemblies to raise awareness, launched a poster competition, and even created their own road safety awareness advert. To mark the end of this academic year s work, Gladesmore s YTA s were invited to the Transport for London YTA Summer Exhibition 2017 at the London Transport Museum. Our YTAs plan to continue their project into the new academic year, where they plan to launch a new road safety obstacle course for students in KS3.

Gladesmore Post Page 16 On a lovlely sunny day at the beginning of July, Gladesmore s KS3 stundents participated in their annual Sports Day. Following a series of hard fought competitive activities, the final results were as follows: Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 1st Place FBK BRN JOH 2nd Place MMR SWM KON 3rd Place CBR MMN RAL

Gladesmore Post Page 17 A fantastic response to the opportunity to play girls rugby has seen more than 60 Gladesmore students take up the sport. With the support of our RFU Liaison Officer, Tom Redfern, and our partner club, Haringey Rhinos, our girls have made enormous improvements in their playing and understanding of the game. Gladesmore now runs teams in all year groups up to Year 11 and a large number of those players have progressed to club rugby with the Rhinos and, even more impressively, several Gladesmore players are now attending training with their respective London Schools squads. Highlights of the year: Year 8 girls winning Haringey/North London trophy. High number of Gladesmore students attending training and playing matches for Haringey Rhinos. In addition, the contribution of Gladesmore players in helping Haringey Rhinos win the senior girls final at the St George s Day Rugby Festival. Attending England v Italy women s international and getting to meet the players post-match. Gladesmore s Year 8 Captain receives her KS3 Player of the Year trophy from the Chairperson of Haringey Rhinos RFC, Helen Rayfield.

Gladesmore Post Page 18 It has been a wonderful year for school sport at Gladesmore. Overall, the level of performances throughout KS3 and KS4 has steadily improved. Gladesmore students now regularly form part of Haringey representative teams across a wide range of sports, leading to greater experience and exposure in competing at higher standard of competition. Moreover, the efforts and hard work of the PE Faculty in making their 3-year plan to raise the profile of PE and sport in the school was recognised earlier this year when Gladesmore received the accolade of being voted Haringey/North London Sporting School of the Year. As in previous years, a massive vote of thanks to all the Gladesmore staff and parents/carers for their continued guidance and support thereby providing a strong motivational foundation from which our sporting students can develop and progress. FOOTBALL: Pride of place goes to our Year 9 boys squad. They completed an unique double by winning both the Haringey Schools League title and Haringey 7-a-Side Cup for the third year in succession and reached the last 16 of the Middlesex Schools Cup. Our Year 7 boys were also crowned League champions RUGBY: Gladesmore s continued involvement in the RFU All Schools Programme has led to another year of improvement and achievement. This year, the focus has been targeted towards the female students and they have proved to be very willing and receptive to all the excellent coaching they have received see separate article for more information. Our Year 8 boys and Year 10 boys both finished top of the Haringey Schools League and a large number of players have now gone on to join and/or play for our partner club, Haringey Rhinos. In addition, our Year 9 boys won the Middlesex Invitational tournament played at the home of the European Cup holders, Saracens RFU. Off the pitch, there were several highlights. Firstly, a group of were invited to attend England v France a 6 Nations International as well English Premiership matches. In addition, a group of girls experienced a great day out when they attended their first rugby international match, featuring England v Italy.

Gladesmore Post Page 19 ATHLETICS: The improvement in consistency of performance can be gauged by the increasing number of Gladesmore students who were selected to represent Haringey at both the Middlesex Schools Athletics Championships and the London Youth Games. In addition, both our Year 8 boys and Year 9 boys won the Haringey Schools Team Cup Competition. In the Indoor Athletics Championships, three of our four teams finished in medal-winning positions. HONOURABLE MENTIONS: SWIMMING: Very well done to our Year 7 girls and Year 8 girls who both achieved team bronze at the Haringey Schools Swimming Championships. TABLE TENNIS: Very well done to our KS3 and KS4 boys teams who picked up bronze and silver medals respectively at the Haringey Schools Table Tennis Championships TRAMPOLINING: Very well done to our Year 8 girls and Year 9 girls who won 4 individual medals including 2 gold and a team bronze at the Haringey Schools Trampolining Championships. VOLLEYBALL: Very well done to our Year 10 boys who finished runnersup in the final of the Haringey Schools Handball Championships. IN ADDITION: A number of successful new PE Clubs began this year. Ranging from Self-Defence to Girls Volleyball, Gladesmore is continually on the look-out to keep their extra-curricular PE programme fresh and exciting. If your child is looking to participate in an activity that will keep them fit and healthy, or to expand their sporting abilities, please check out the first PE Clubs Time-Table that will be issued in mid-september FINALLY: If your child is excelling in sport away from Gladesmore, then the PE Faculty would love to hear about it. Please send any reports and/or photos that are suitable for inclusion in the next PE update to wrd@gladesmore.com and include student excelling in the subject heading. On behalf of the PE Faculty, we would like to wish Mr Brown all the best as he will be retiring at the end of this school term. We extend our thanks for his major contribution to the success of the PE Faculty.
