SUCCESS AT KEY STAGE The GCSE results were again excellent, and the school improved its 5+A*-C pass rate to 95%. All KS4 results listed below are provisional. 5 BTEC/Dip Level 2 Distinction* Distinction Merit Pass Entries Art BTEC L Business BTEC L ICT BTEC L Media BTEC L Applied Science BTEC L Application Science BTEC L Sport BTEC L Perf Arts BTEC L Construction BTEC L Fashion & Clothing - BTEC VALUE ADDED This measure looks at how much progress pupils have made from the beginning to the end of their compulsory secondary education (between the end of Key Stage 2 and the end of Key Stage 4). The Value Added figure helps to identify schools that are helping their pupils make more progress or less progress than average. One thousand is the average figure and any figures over 1,010 would indicate students had made significant progress. The following figures indicate that the progress students at Beal make from KS2-4 is consistently in the top 10% of schools nationally and this year in the top 5% nationally. Key: Green = significantly above national average Value Added Indicators KS2 to KS Best 8 value added (this measure estimates how pupils perform in their best 8 GCSEs (or equivalent qualifications) plus English and Mathematics.) For 2016 the coefficient will change, therefore, this is pending. Levels of progress in English and Mathematics The national expectation is that students will make 3 levels of progress by the end of Key Stage 4. The progress that Beal students make in English and Mathematics is consistently above the national average and the working totals for 2015/16 are below: 4
Progress Overall making expected 3 levels of progress 83% Overall making above expected progress (4LP) 57% English making expected 3 levels of progress 77% English making above expected progress (4LP) 38% Mathematics making expected 3 levels of progress 89% Mathematics making above expected progress (4LP) 58% PROGRESS 8 From 2016 all Academies will be measured on how much progress pupils make between the end of primary school (Key Stage 2) and the end of secondary school (Key Stage 4), compared to pupils in other schools who got similar results at the end of primary school. This will be known as Progress 8. The Progress 8 measure is designed to encourage all students to study a broad and balanced curriculum. The new measure will be based on students performance measured across eight subjects called Attainment 8. For each student the 8 subjects must be a combination from the diagram below. 1. An English element based on the highest point score in a pupil s EBacc English language or English literature qualification. This will be double weighted provided a pupil has taken both qualifications. 5
In 2016 an English (combined) qualification can be included and double weighted. 2. A double weighted mathematics element that will contain the point score of the pupil s English Baccalaureate (EBacc) mathematics qualification. 3. An element which can include the three highest point scores from any of the EBacc qualifications in science subjects, computer science, history, geography, and languages. For more information see the list of qualifications that count in the Ebacc: baccalaureate- eligible- qualifications The qualifications can count in any combination and there is no requirement to take qualifications in each of the pillars of the EBacc. 4. The remaining element contains the three highest point scores in any three other subjects, including English language or literature(if not counted in the English slot), further GCSE qualifications (including EBacc subjects) or any other non- GCSE qualifications on the DfE approved list. For more information see the list of qualifications that will be included in the 2016 key stage 4 performance tables: ( 4_list.pdf ), 2017 key stage 4 performance tables: ( 4_list.pdf ), and the 2018 key stage 4 performance tables: ( performance- tables- technical- and- vocational- qualifications ). If a pupil has not taken the maximum number of qualifications that count in each group then they will receive a point score of zero where a slot is empty. No unreformed GCSEs (A*- G), International GCSEs or level 1/level 2 certificates in these subjects will count in performance tables once reformed GCSEs in that subject are introduced. The Progress 8 score will always be determined by dividing the points total by 10 (the eight qualifications with English and Mathematics counting double), regardless of how many qualifications your child sits or in which subjects. A pupil s Progress 8 score is defined as their Attainment 8 score, minus their estimated Attainment 8 score. The estimated Attainment 8 score is the average Attainment 8 score of all pupils nationally with the same prior attainment at KS2. A positive score means the pupil made better progress than expected. The school's Progress 8 score is the average of all students' Progress 8 scores. A score of below triggers an inspection, and a score of +1 or more makes the school exempt from routine inspections for a year. 6
2016 Number of pupils included in the Progress 8 score 223 Average Attainment Progress For further details and comparison of the schools performance please visit the DfE School and College Performance website. SUCCESS IN THE SIXTH FORM 2016 Beal offers an extensive academic programme; AS and A2 courses, and a growing number of Vocational Courses; Art, Business, ICT, Media and Sports Studies at BTEC Level 3 and Business at BTEC Level 2. In addition we provide a full programme of Curriculum Enrichment, Work Experience opportunities, and an Accelerated Learning Programme. This year's A Level results were the best in the school's history. The Average Point Score per Student was 758. This is the best ever Average Point Score at Beal High School. The Average Point Score per Entry was 219 (in 2015 it was 222). As an inclusive Sixth Form, the progress made by students relative to their starting points is also very important. Student progress at A Level is measured using the ALPS system that judges how well 7
students perform compared to their starting point, measured by their GCSE performance. The ALPS Value Added Scored for Beal for the past three years is: ALPS Value Added Score 2014 ALPS Value Added Score 2015 ALPS Value Added Score An ALPS score 1-3 is judged to be excellent progress and shows that a school has performed in the top 25% of Sixth Forms in the country.
