1 UW Colleges Transfer Guide SPECIAL EDUCATION Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) College of Education & Human Services The following guide is intended to assist you in planning for your eventual transfer to and graduation from UW Oshkosh. This guide includes only the requirements that can be completed at the UW Colleges. It is not a requirement, nor always advisable, to complete all courses listed in this guide prior to transfer. For a full list of requirements refer to the additional resources included below. Note that this guide is an advisory tool only and subject to change. UW OSHKOSH ADMISSION Submit the UW System application, available online at: Send official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Send official high school transcripts if fewer than 30 transferable college credits have been earned. THE MAJOR Special Education majors can be certified to teach grades 1-8 (MC-EA) and/or grades 6-12 (EA-AD). MC-EA and EA- AD are recommended. To pursue an education major at UW Oshkosh a student must be formally admitted to the Professional Education Program (PEP). Admission to PEP is a multi-phase process, separate from admission to the university. Admission to one does not guarantee admission to the other. This process includes sequential courses, specific deadlines and careful planning. To ensure timely and efficient progress through the professional education program at UWO, the Associate s degree, or a two-year stay at the UW Colleges, is NOT advised. While every student s situation is unique, the majority of students will benefit from transferring to UWO as soon as soon as he or she is eligible to complete the first stage of admission (see #1 below). 1. Admission to the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) Admission and enrollment at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Passing scores on the PRAXIS I: I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) Passing Scores: Reading 175; Writing 174; Math 173 Official scores must be sent to UW Oshkosh Recipient Code: #1916 Register at You are encouraged to take the PRAXIS I during your Freshman year of college. Completion of COMM 111 (CTA 103 at UWC) with a grade of C or better Successful completion of a minimum of 28 credits Combined grade point average of

2 Application to Special Education Practicum Semester In the semester that Special/Dual Education students apply to the COEHS, they also apply for their Initial Practicum semester (potentially their first semester at UWO). Students are required to attend a meeting at UWO regarding this application process. The practicum semester is required for Special/Dual Education majors prior to applying for admission to licensure (see #2 below). The following courses are prerequisites for the practicum semester, and must be complete or in progress at the time of application: UW Oshkosh UW Colleges Communications 111 CTA 103 Writing/WBIS 188 ENG 101 Math 110 MAT Admission to Licensure Program Initial Stage Electronic Portfolio Admission to the COEHS and current enrollment at UWO Completion of the Education Core courses: UW Oshkosh UW Colleges Ed Found 235 PSY 250 Ed Found 380 EDU 230 or 330 Ed Leadership 205 CPS 106 or 105 Special Ed 352 EDU 300 Successful completion of a minimum of 40 credits Combined gpa of 2.75 minimum Completion or enrollment in the Special Education Practicum semester (UWO only). E-portfolio (access granted upon admission to the COEHS but save materials now): Application to licensure is made through the development of an Initial Stage E-Portfolio aligned with the Ten Wisconsin Teacher Standards ( Only standards 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 10 will be addressed at this stage of application, and include: o A graded assignment from a General Education course that demonstrates subject matter knowledge; o Artifacts chosen from professional course work and field experiences. UNIVERSITY STUDIES PROGRAM & DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Students who transfer with the Associate of Arts and Science degree will have met the University Studies Program (USP) or general education requirements, but NOT necessarily the degree requirements for the BSE. 6 NOTES University Studies Program (USP) The University Studies Program (USP) is the new definition of general education at UW Oshkosh, designed to help students reap the maximum benefits from their college education. Transfer students will participate in USP at varying degrees based upon the number of credits transferred into the university. Other Notes 0-29 Credits You will be responsible for the same requirements as an incoming freshman. Work completed will be evaluated on a course-by-course evaluation and applied to UW Oshkosh requirements Credits You will be partially responsible for the requirements of the USP. A transfer year experience, a short course to orient you to UW Oshkosh, will be required. Work completed will be evaluated on a courseby-course evaluation and applied to UW Oshkosh requirements. 60+ Credits Work completed will be evaluated on a course-by-course evaluation and applied to UW Oshkosh requirements. Any USP requirements not fulfilled by transfer coursework will be addressed at UW Oshkosh. USP will be in effect for all transfer students beginning Fall of In a few instances, courses are designated differently at the UW Colleges than they are at UWO in terms of general education (i.e. HU becomes SS in transfer). In these instances the student can often choose to accept the UWO designation, or have the UWC designation honored. Changes cannot be made until after UWO admission, and it is always best to discuss these changes with an academic advisor first. The official UW Oshkosh GPA will be calculated using only UW Oshkosh credits earned. Credits transferred to UW Oshkosh are recognized, but the grades are not included in the official UW Oshkosh GPA. For various university-level honors designations students will have to earn at least 60 credits at UW Oshkosh and only those Oshkosh grades are considered. The official transcript will display the official UW Oshkosh GPA, UW Oshkosh course work and transfer course grades that will not be included in the official UW Oshkosh GPA. The UW Colleges made changes to several departments, effective January 1, The current departments are listed on this guide with the previous departments and course numbers in ( ).
