3 Purpose Richardson Independent School District conducted a survey in conjunction with Vision 2020 and the District Improvement Plan to solicit feedback from campus staff regarding school climate and district initiatives. The survey inquired about: Academic Preparation School Operations District Operations School Leadership Student Support Parent Engagement Faculty Relations and Support Safety and Behavior Richardson ISD staff whose position related to the following programs were also asked to provide feedback about the program(s). The survey results were communicated in respective audit reports and are not provided herein: Advanced Academic Studies Special Education Program Dyslexia Program 3

4 Background In , RISD contracted with K12Insight (an independent, technology-based research and communications firm) to develop a survey that engaged campus staff and solicited feedback regarding critical district issues. Following the Staff Climate Survey administration, Human Resources made the following recommendations which were embedded in the District Improvement Plan: 1. Debrief, review, and revise the survey to improve future administrations 2. Establish baselines for future comparison 3. Disaggregate survey data as appropriate for administrator use in district and campus planning 4

5 Background Recommendation: Debrief, review, and revise the survey to improve future administrations In , Human Resources revised the survey in response to Goal 3 Action 2 of the District Improvement Plan to better understand staff perceptions. Revisions were carefully considered so that data from could be used as a baseline for comparison to data. Revisions included: rephrasing or restating questions for clarity eliminating the not known option where appropriate branching questions so that participants responded only to questions relevant to their position adding questions that align with District Improvement Plan actions (e.g. Explore enhancement of employee benefits such as additional child care options Goal 3 - Action 8 ) considering other recommended revisions by K12Insight Additionally, the survey was extended to include questions as part of the Special Education, Advanced Academic Studies, and Dyslexia program evaluations. 5

10 Background Recommendation: Disaggregate survey data as appropriate for administrator use in district and campus planning As in previous years, Human Resources will provide each campus and department with disaggregated data to assist in developing goals for continuous improvement within each organization. 10

11 Technical Notes The survey was open December 10-20, Teachers, staff, and administrators were ed unique URL survey invitations in order to participate. Questions were branched by position types so that participants were asked questions that were relevant to their position. Likert-type scales used in the survey included: Agreement Scale Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree and Don t Know Quality Scale Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor Quantity Scale Ample, Some, and No Implementation or Support Data labels for percentages less than 5% are not shown. The findings for each item in the report exclude participants who did not answer the item or chose Not Applicable. This survey did not use a randomized sample. Responses only reflect those who took the survey. The response rate is 89%. Given the total number of respondents is 3,407 from a total population of 3,822, and using a confidence level of 95%, the confidence interval is calculated to be Findings from this survey can be stated with a relatively high degree of certainty. To ensure content validity, survey questions were jointly developed in collaboration with Dr. Fernando Medina and Patti Kieker. 11

12 Executive Summary of Findings A number of positive findings were identified: A relatively high percentage of invited respondents (89%) participated in the survey. 93% of respondents rated their campus as Excellent or Very Good. Climate Dimensions All climate dimensions met or exceeded 89% positive responses with most dimensions above 90%. Student Support (94%) and Parent Engagement (96%) were the highest-rated climate dimensions. Academic Preparation 94% of respondents agreed that their campus supports the District s vision, mission, and goals Student Support Overwhelmingly, respondents indicated there is an adult to whom a student can go for help with either a personal or school problem (99% and 99%, respectively). Parent Engagement and Support 98% of respondents strongly agree or agree that parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend activities at school. District Operations 98% of respondents believe that Health Services (Nurse services, health education for students and community, vision and hearing screenings, scoliosis screenings, etc. ) are Excellent or Good. 12

13 Executive Summary of Findings District-Wide Technology Initiative Technology Integration and Differentiated Instruction were identified to have the highest level of implementation (96% and 98%, respectively). Elementary School-Wide Enrichment Initiative 99% of respondents indicate that Elementary School-Wide Enrichment is implemented (Ample and Some). 96% of respondents indicate having support/professional development for Elementary School-Wide Enrichment (Ample and Some). Secondary Project-Based Learning Initiative 92% respondents indicate that Secondary Project-Based Learning is implemented (Ample and Some). 13

School Operations School Leadership Faculty Relations Support Safety and Behavior School Operations 80% of respondents indicated they have the technology needed to effectively integrate technology. School Leadership 83% of respondents indicated the principal or other administrators provide useful feedback about instructional practices. 87% of respondents indicated teachers and staff at school are appreciated for good work. Faculty Relations and Support 83% and 81% of respondents reported that district and campus professional development sessions, respectively, have helped them better meet students learning needs. 86% of respondents reported that staff members are treated fairly. Safety and Behavior 81% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed that discipline is enforced fairly and equitably at school. 76% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed that alcohol and/or drug use is not a problem at this school. 14

47 Strengths Employee survey engagement remains high and exceeds prior participation. The perception of overall Quality of Education (Excellent or Good) increased from 88% to 93%. Campus perception of Central Instructional Support increased from 70% to 83%. Campus perception of Parent Engagement Increased from 84% to 96%. The increased level of district-wide initiative implementation reflects that teachers are focusing on students by providing academic preparation, support, and enrichment experiences. The level of district-wide initiative support reflects that administration is focusing on teachers by providing professional learning opportunities. 47
