1 ALATEC - Assistive Technology - The Tool to Independence October 11-12, AUBURN UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER Workshops & Breakout Sessions The Art of 3D Printing - Hands On Workshop First 20 Individuals Michael Papp Rapidly advancing low cost 3D printing technology provides anyone with a direct way of creating their own designs on a computer and converting them into physical objects. With the introduction of 3D printers in the $500 to $1000 price range, anyone can design and produce their own assistive technology. This workshop will introduce participants to the computer based tools needed to create a model, and help explain the advantages and limitations of 3D printing. Participants will need to bring their own laptop computer with the following minimum specifications: Computer Specifications: Windows Vista (or newer) or Apple OS X 10.7 (or newer) or Google Chrome OS on Chromebook Web Browser Required: Google Chrome 10 (or newer) or Mozilla FireFox 4 (or newer). This two hour workshop will be limited to the first 20 registrations. Participants must bring their own laptop computer, and set up accounts or download and install software prior to the presentation. The presentation will cover the use of the following websites and applications: Thingiverse You need to set up an account before the session starts. Online design community for discovering, making, and sharing 3D printable things. TinkerCAD: runs best in Chrome or FireFox You will need to create an account before the session starts. At the end of the session, participants will know how to create, download, and print a 3D object.

2 Inclusion Through Innovation: Designing for Diversity with UDL and Emerging Technology Luis Perez Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing personalized learning environments that account for the variability and diversity of today's learners from the start. As a student and faculty member who happens to have a visual impairment, Dr. Luis Pérez has witnessed firsthand how technology, when implemented in a meaningful and purposeful way, can level the playing field and empower all learners to achieve academic success. Join Dr. Pérez as he shares a number of free- and low-cost tools for providing access to the curriculum for all, starting with the universal design features that are already built into the devices many of our learners bring into the classroom. You will also leave this session with a framework for integrating technology into your teaching in a more transformative, learner-centered way. The design of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) will also be discussed as a requirement for getting the most out of inclusive technology. 1. What s New for Diverse Learners in ios 10 Luis Perez In this fast paced half-hour session you will learn about the new accessibility features built into ios 10, the latest versions of Apple s software for mobile devices, and how they can benefit our diverse learners. In addition to a new magnifier feature that could be a less expensive and more portable alternative to a CCTV, the latest version of ios includes display adjustments for those with color vision difficulties, as well as options for customizing the text to speech feature to make it even more useful for students with dyslexia and other print disabilities. In addition to these built-in options, you will learn about a number of free or low cost apps that extend the functionality of these features to make the curriculum more accessible for learners with reading, writing, and vision difficulties. 2. OASIS: Serving Seniors with Vision Loss Mathew Haynes In this session participants will learn what services are available to seniors with blindness or low vision through the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services OASIS Program (Older Alabamians System of Information and Services) This program is dedicated to renewing independent and rewarding lifestyles for Alabama s adults 55 and older who have vision problems. Services are at no cost to the participant and are available regardless of financial need.

3 3. Assistive Technology Have You Considered It? Sheila Bolling As special educators, we know we have to consider assistive technology (AT) but the question of how and what to consider raises many questions. There continues to be a lack of understanding of the roles of general and special educators including teachers, IT providers, and administrators in considering and providing AT services. Difficulties may also arise because provision of AT devices can involve direct expenditures during times of very limited budgets. This session will focus on the SETT process in considering AT and answer some of the tough questions. 4. An Overview of the Advancements in Prosthetic Technology Glenn Crumpton This presentation will cover prosthetic technology and the advancement in prosthetic technology. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the new technology that is available for individuals using prosthetics and orthotics. 5. AT and Transition: How do we make it work? Jessica Wright Our lives are spent in transition- moving from primary education to secondary, from secondary to college or employment, from college to employment, changing jobs, changing positions, changing positions, retiring - it has been said the the only thing that stays the same is change. This session will address assistive technology users transitioning out of the K-12 and into higher education. This transition is particularly challenging; the individual is laying under the education umbrella, but all the rules have changed. To make the transition successful, there are key pieces that must fall into place. During this session, participants will identify differences in the AT process between K-12 and higher education, identify key information necessary to make the transition successful. 6. Technology & Social Media: Update on the 2017 CRCC Code of Ethics: Section J Nancy Adams This session will discuss changes to the upcoming 2017 CRCC Code of Ethics, Section J and the ethical implications of technology, social media and service delivery that have proliferated across the globe and raised many complex ethical and legal issues for counselors, supervisors, and other service providers, as well as consumers of services.

4 7. Telepresence Robots in Education: Collaborating Beyond the Classroom Justin Beatty This presentation will share how students that can't attend classes or adults that can t attend work or meetings can and do so through our ipad telepresence robot, Double. We've taken traditional video conferencing through a laptop and flipped it on it's head. To give students and adults a true autonomy and physical presence in the classroom and work by providing an ipad on a Segway style device that is being used by K-12 schools and employers across the country. The presentation will show how the technology is being used as an educational resource for creating effective distance learning environments regardless of a student's physical location. We've increased the quality and effectiveness of their educational experience by fostering more social interaction that is natural between their teachers and fellow students. Helping Those Who Care: Assistive Technology to Aid Aging Caregivers Wendy Dean In this session participants will learn about assistive technology solutions that can be utilized by aging caregivers and/or care recipients with developmental disabilities to remain in their home with their families longer (preventing relocation or premature outof-home placement). Participants will learn about assistive technology solutions that aid in caring for individuals. These assistive technology solutions can help reduce stress, prevent possible injuries, provide an enhanced quality of life and increase self-esteem by providing tools that promote independence and self-sufficiency. This training is available statewide. 9. Calming Your Chaos: AT for ADD Jessica Wright The impact of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is incredibly different with each individual. Two areas that can be an incredible struggle are time management and organization. This presentation will discuss tools and strategies to calm the chaos of everyday life. At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe at least 3 time management tools/strategies and be able to describe at least 3 organizational tools/strategies.

5 10. Getting AAC into the Classroom Kelly Cadden The primary focus of the presentation will be to discuss how to encourage students to use their AAC into a normal school routine. At the end of the session, the participant will be able to explain the difference in core and fringe vocabulary, and learn a variety of low and high tech AAC systems. Participants will be provided a list of ways to incorporate AAC into the natural flow of a pre-school through high school classroom 11. Let's Put Some Shine to that Chromebook! Jeff Mega The Chromebook is quickly becoming the preferred electronic device of school systems. Its low cost and ease of use are moving it ahead of the ipad. So how can you make it an effective tool in the classroom? What accessible features are available to it? Come and learn how to make that Chromebook shine. 12. Introduction to Assistive Technologies for the Blind Joel Stephens This presentation will focus on displaying and explaining the basic devices used as accommodations for the blind and visually impaired in education, work, and personal settings. Topics will include computer usage with speech and magnification, CCTVs (desktop & hand-held), Braille note takers, low-cost technology alternatives, tablets, and other devices that improve independence. 13. An Evolution of Assistive Technology for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Cedric Tyson This presentation will address how assistive technology has evolved over the years for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Current technology demonstrations will be provided with a focus on accommodations in the workplace, emergency preparedness, and independent living. 14. Implementing Universal and Inclusive Design Learning in the Classroom Scott Renner Accessibility is a critical component of any classroom or online learning environment. With legal requirements stronger than ever, colleges, universities, and schools must find tangible ways to improve their accessibility for all students. This presentation will discuss assistive technology that is used to access accessible materials and the principles of universal and inclusive design that can be applied in the classroom or online learning environment, with a focus on the accessibility of course content and information and electronic technology.

6 15. iaccessibility Elizabeth Stewart This session is an overview of the accessibility features offered on the ipad with a deeper look at Voice Over and Switch Access and how they can be utilized in the classroom. This session will also review how ipads can be beneficial as a universal design tool to any student with our without disabilities. 16. On Site Formal Assistive Technology Evaluations Linda Johnston & Larry Beard Research supports that AT Evaluations should be conducted on site within the primary environment where the device(s) are to be utilized. It is also necessary to gather data to provide information to determine if the recommended technology can be useful in other environments in which the individual accesses.with an emphasis for students to be included in the general education curriculum, much emphasis has been placed on AT as a possible solution. At the end of this session participants will gain an understanding of data gathered and how it is utilized in the AT Report to make appropriate recommendations to meet the unique needs of each student in a PreK-12 setting in all content areas. Various lite, medium and high tech devices will be shared based on precious AT Evaluations conducted. 17. Texthelp Read & Write Gold: An In-Depth Tutorial Shelly Justice Don't let language-based learning disabilities hinder your academic or professional progress. This comprehensive program provides individuals who struggle with reading and writing the tools they need to succeed in an academic or professional setting. In this session, we will cover the support tools that Read & Write Gold offers and get a hands-on look at the program in use. Upon completion of the session, the participant will have a greater insight to this particular assistive technology solution for individuals with language-based learning disabilities who are pursuing their dreams.

7 18. 3D Printing Assistive Technology Michael Papp The wonders of 3D printing assistive technology are being discussed all over the news, social media, and the web. But what is 3D printing, how does it work, and will it really solve all our problems in finding and paying for expensive assistive technology? This session will discuss the 3D Printing project at the Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology (RE&AT) program with the Department of Rehabilitation Services. We will discuss what our project has done over the past year, as well as what entry level 3D printers can and cannot do. Participants will see products and devices developed by the RE&AT program, as well as learn how to find free designs for 3D printed assistive technology on line, how 3D printers work, and what free software is available to help design their own assistive devices. 19. Assistive Technology for Adapted Sports, Recreation and Leisure Activities Nathan Waters This presentation will cover various types of assistive technologies that are used for adapted sports, recreation, and leisure actives. Participants will discover that having a disability doesn t mean that you can t participate in sports and have fun. In this session, we ll discuss adaptive equipment and accessibility involved with adapted sports, recreational and leisure activities. Come learn about resources in the community. 20. High Tech on a Low Tech Budget Jeff Mega The accessibility features on the ipad are great, but many people suffer sticker shock when they get to the price tag. If all you re doing is playing on the internet, reading s, watching movies, checking Facebook, etc. that price tag is hefty. What if I told you could buy a tablet for around $40 and be able to do the same activities. Come check out the Kindle Fire and its accessibility features.
