Eller College of Management The University of Arizona MIS 111 Freshman Honors Showcase Portfolium Team 45: Bryanna Samuels, Jaxon Parrott, Julian Setina, Niema Beglari Fall 2015

Executive Summary The implementation of Portfolium at the University of Arizona will improve the career readiness, by allowing students to create a digital portfolio by uploading their professional type of research and projects that they perform in school and extracurricular ventures in a cloud-based platform to showcase their proven skillsets. The network created by Portfolium between top-employers and current and graduated students bridges the skillset gap during the application processes allowing companies to visualize the students experience as a supplement to their resumes. Portfolium is beneficial to all fields of studies, however, we believe the most suitable would be upper level business classes here at the University of Arizona. Since Portfolium is completely free and available to every student, the cost of implementation at the University of Arizona is nothing. The online website, as well as its mobile phone application, is very easy to navigate and requires little to no learning curve allowing students to access and upload to their Portfolium swiftly. There is little risk management with Portfolium too, because since it is not relied on as a source of instruction if the site becomes unavailable for some reason instruction during class will not be halted. Portfolium, rather is a supplement source for students to showcase the work they are doing in classes that show employers that they have the competencies companies are looking for. 1

Introduction Our objective is to have professor s at the University of Arizona adopt the regular use of Portfolium into their classes to benefit their students futures. Portfolium is a free online network that promotes career readiness by bridging the skills gap between current and graduated college students and employers. Our application can easily be integrated into upper level classes that perform professional style research, projects, and other academia that showcase the students proven skillsets. Therefore, students are not only performing work in this nature for the class itself, but also producing work that companies are able to visually perceive while trying to hire people with the proven competencies they are looking for. Multiple universities, such as California State University, have partnered with Portfolium to increase their students experience at the institution with a better career in the future. Loren Blanchard, CSU s executive vice chancellor for academic and student affairs exclaimed that CSU is excited about its partnership with Portfolium, which represents another tool to help our students be successful [and] help them find jobs after they graduate (Abellana). Our hope if Portfolium is adopted by professors and the University is that students will be able to acquire and demonstrate required competencies to employers by showcasing their scholarly work in the world of quickly adapting skill requirements. 3

Product Overview Portfolium is a networking system that closes the gap between university students and employers by providing a platform for students to showcase their projects and credentials unlike a traditional resume. Portfolium enhances resumes by making them interactive. Now employers can verify the skills listed on resumes by looking at the projects students produce. Students enhance their resume by uploading their projects to Portfolium. Then companies will communicate with the students based on the quality of their work. Portfolium is a free website that remains free after a student graduates. Portfolium targets the education market with their primary customers being universities, university and college students. Over 2000 universities use Portfolium. Universities can create a page for their students to showcase their work and students can create their own page. Portfolium is a small private company composed of ten employees, located in San Diego, California. The company has three major investors: University Ventures, The Triton Fund and Seed San Diego. Since the start up of Portfolium in 2014, the company has raised an astounding two million dollars (Newswire). With the growing amount of interest from investors in Portfolium, founder Adam Markowitz plans to continue to expand on the application. Their business strategy over the next few years is to turn universities into full providers of career readiness. Since Portfolium is a private company, their revenues and expenses have not been released to the public. Portfolium is a website based application that is usable on PC and Mac devices. There is a Portfolium app for apple devices, which delivers on the go, quick access to ones Portfolium page. Setting up a Portfolium page is quick and easy, it takes less than five minutes to become a member. Uploading projects is just as easy. Portfolium works with 4

LinkedIn to create an interactive resume that better displays one s skills. Portfolium allows students another opportunity to gain job and internship experience. The biggest positive attribute of Portfolium that sets it apart from other companies, like LinkedIn, is that it allows you to prove your skills instead of listing your skills in a resume. Reassuring employers in a potential employee s skillset and abilities (About Us). Proposed Instructional Activity Portfolium is best suited for the education market as their primary customers are students and universities. Portfolium is a highly organized website, that categorizes the projects by their subject. The application is beneficial to all subjects, however Portfolium would be best suited for the Eller College of Management because there are numerous projects, case studies, business proposals, etc., that show off the skills of the students. Portfolium works with blackboard, the online component to the University of Arizona s Eller College of Management business program. Paring Portfolium with blackboard makes its implementation and usage easier. When students are uploading their projects to blackboard to get graded, they can also upload them to Portfolium. Portfolium would be implemented in higher level classes, classes for students already in the school of business, and it would be used to showcase independent and group work. Portfolium is recommended for a business communication class. Portfolium would be an addition to the assignment completion process. Once students complete their projects and cases they will upload them to Portfolium. This process will help them learn how to effectively communicate with employers and build their resumes. After students upload their project they would monitor it to see if employers contacted them or commented on it. After they have monitored their Portfolium page they would write a reflection on their 5

project which would include the outcome of using Portfolium. This process also applies to graded assignments. The implementation of Portfolium adds incentive for students to increase their skills and perform better because their projects will be a part of their resume and employers will now be looking at their projects, not just professors. Next Steps / Future Work We believe that Portfolium can positively affect every student at the University of Arizona by putting them a step ahead in career readiness from other students around the nation. Based on our assessment and interviews with Professors Boyer and Piscitello, we believe that it is necessary for information sessions on our application to be organized for the faculty. Because Portfolium is free, easy to implement into class, and requires no further learning curve to use, the only thing bringing it away from professors attention is that they do not know what our application is, apposed to other networking services such as LinkedIn. Even professors who may have heard about our network service may not know the career readiness benefits it holds for their students. Once the information about how useful Portfolium and its services are to their student s futures is brought to the professors attentions through information sessions, we believe that many will adopt it into their instructional activities. 6

Feasibility / Design Assessment The feasibility of implementing the use of Portfolium in the classroom and with students is very simple. After having interviews with two faculty members our group was able to receive a large amount of feedback, many of it positive. Our first interview was which Cherilyn Boyer, who is an instructor in the field of Business Communication. Overall she really liked our proposal. She thought that Portfolium would be especially helpful for her students that are learning English as their second language. Professor Boyer said that these student sometimes struggle with networking themselves and have difficulty finding jobs and internships and thought that Portfolium would give these students a chance to establish themselves with other companies. Her final note was that she thought that are application had a lot of potential and would look into using it more to see if it was a right fit for her and her classes. Our second interview was with Victor Piscitello, who is an instructor in the field of Marketing. Professor Piscitello was more skeptical about how advantageous Portfolium could be. If he were to have his students use it he would want to know first weather employers want universities to use this application because that is what ultimately matters. He said that their our so many new applications that he wonders what else one will have to sign up for next in order to network themselves. Because of the large number of new applications, he believes that one like Portfolium may be obsolete unless it really stands out. Companies do not want to have to deal with a lot of different applications and if Portfolium could be one that contains a wide spectrum networking 7

tools then it could be useful if it were to become the standard for online portfolios and resumes. Professor Piscitello believes that Eller does a great job at promoting career readiness among it s students but thinks that Portfolium has potential for being useful to students of different majors besides business like engineering and sciences. Overall his feedback was indefinite and saw the potential for Portfolium but would not find it necessary for his class. From a technical standpoint it would be very easy for students to use Portfolium. There are no bandwidth requirements as all you need is the internet to be connect with a vast network of companies. There is no software that needs to be installed for computer use one would only need to download the app if desiring to use Portfolium via smart phone. Once you create your account which only requires your you are free to all the tools that Portfolium has to offer. Also, from an operational standpoint Portfolium is very simple to use. There is hardly a learning curve as Portfolium s clean and organized layout makes navigating easy. There is no cost to learn how to use Portfolium efficiently as it is free. You can learn everything you need to know about this application within the first fifteen minutes of using your account. For Portfolium, the institution, instructor and student will have to pay zero dollars for the usage of this product. It is a completely free application, and is quite easy to set up. There should be no problem for having to upgrade hardware, and if a student needed to update his or her computers it would be of no additional cost. Since Portfolium is accessed through the internet you don t even have to download the application itself to use it. This makes the usage of this application very simple, leaving the student and the instructor to merely take seconds to sign up for this application. Also, there are no communication costs, since the app runs 8

solely through the internet. To send a message or use the product the user simply just needs WIFI, which can easily be accessed all over our campus. Portfolium is an application that allows the students to showcase their work. Although it is an advantage to the students and the professor s, it is not detrimental to the class if there were an issue with the website. Since the sole reason for the application is to upload and showcase students work as supplements to their resumes, if it were to shut down the students would still have their projects and such saved on their computers. By waiting temporarily for the application to restore, they would easily be able to upload their work immediately with no problems. Also, since Portfolium is completely free it imposes no risk of financial loss if the site were to go out of business. Portfolium is simply a website/application that gives the students an opportunity to showcase their projects they performed in their classes to top employers. Rather than just doing professional type work for a grade and moving on, students now have a chance to show employers actual work that showcases their skillsets. However, without Portfolium the class would still go on as usual. By using Portfolium, students would be in no risk whatsoever of the release of their educational record. Although Portfolium is a site to upload projects and work, it isn t associated with the student s educational record in any way. Portfolium has absolutely no access to students grades or academic records of the sort, and only has information that students provide. Furthermore, a student does not give up his or her rights to their work by uploading to the site. Regarding accessibility, Portfolium states that it is making its tools accessible for all users, including those with disabilities. Our tools comply with Federal Section 508 guidelines for full accessibility as well as WCAG 9

2.0 AAA recommendations for web content (Portfolium Accessibility). Portfolium complies with federal section 508 guidelines, and users with disabilities have no problem accessing the application. Regarding privacy, each user owns its own user content, and by making available their user content in the Site of Services, they represent that they own and have all rights necessary to their individual content (Terms of Use). Defined more clearly, each user possesses all rights to their own content and can control who sees and uses their content. Conclusions Portfolium is a free online career readiness network for current and graduated college students. It allows students to upload and showcase their professional research, projects, and work experience to top-tier employers seeking to hire students with competent skill sets. Portfolium is important because it bridges the skills gap between college students and employers. It allows companies to visualize the skillsets of students rather than just read about past experiences on a conventional resume. Students at the University of Arizona perform professional research, projects, and jobs constantly for their classes or own personal endeavors. Portfolium allows students to showcase these types of work as a supplement to their resumes when applying for jobs or internships. Our applications seamless integration into the classroom and daily lives of students motivates students to not only to do well on their work for a grade, but to show off their skills through their work as they showcase it on Portfolium. 10
