1 Introduction to I.C.O. Europe I.C.O. was established in 1989 with a mission to stimulate the development of interactive learning materials and software. I.C.O. is very pleased to be appointed by Hot Lava Software, Inc. as their Gold Partner for Europe Hot Lava Software is the leader in mobile learning solution and mobile content tools provider in USA since I.C.O. is very proud and privileged to be the first in this region to introduce the patented and proven mobile development system The Learning Mobile Author that supports Blackberry, Pocket PC, Palm OS and Mobile phones. 3
2 What type of Learning produce the greatest effect? The above illustration was published in The McKinsey Quarterly December 2001 showing the average retention of learning via various mode of learning. The Learning Pyramid clearly illustrated that learning is one thing, internalize and retain what were learnt is another. To achieve retention of 50% or more, tradition classroom and e-learning implementation may not be sufficient as both are focusing on individual learning and achieving highest passing mark in examination. This mode of learning only benefited those few natural high achievers which would most likely top the 20% of the class without much effort. The outcome is that those who are good will remain good and those who are average will remain average performers. Efforts and facilities must be introduce, with the elements of fun, to encourage students to Discuss in Group and Practice by Doing REPEATEDLY often enough - over and over again at their own pace; as and when they feel good about doing it, without pressure on them; then will the students internalize the learning and recalling of knowledge understanding becoming second nature. The outcome is a breakthrough in achieving higher passing grade for average students. 4
One possible implementation of Mobile Learning is to introduce bite-size fun INTERACTIVE LEARNING MODULES and Self Assessment quizzes, which can be completed by students within 5 to 10 minutes, to complement classroom & e-learning lessons. The Interactive mobile learning modules must be accessible by students ANYTIME & ANYWHERE, via mobile devices (PDAs or Mobile Phones) without the use of PCs, notebooks or Tablet PCs. Teacher Test Results Tracking Learning Content Rapid creation and publishing student student teacher Hotlava m-learning Platform student Feedback teacher Student Learning Content Rapid creation and publishing student Collaborate Learning and Knowledge Sharing encourage a learning culture and a new mindset of THINKING TOGETHER, LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER AND HELPING EACH OTHER TO ACHIEVE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE. 5
Learning By Teaching In fact, ancient wisdom and many great leaders had proven to us over and over again that the best way to learn is TO TEACH. Which help to achieve the highest level of retention rate of 80%. Therefore, the provision of tools that facilities and allows students to teach (or to share their knowledge) will facilitate the process of KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER. Thus bringing learning to a whole new level. Schools and learning institutions can drive Knowledge Transfer by providing simple to use Authoring Tools to encourage development and deployment of bite-size Interactive Mobile Learning Modules via mobile devices and facilitate learning at anytime and anywhere. With Mobile Learning, a new paradigm shift is observed as creating content is no more the sole right of teachers. Students will now have the opportunities to participate in creating innovative learning content and share with fellow students to encourage COLLABORATIVE LEARNING and KNOWLEDGE SHARING. Imaging the look on the face of students of enthusiasm, excitement, happiness and lots of smiles proudly showing their creation to friends, fellow students and teachers with their own mobile phone or PDA. 6
3 What is Mobile Learning? m-learning is the intersection of mobile computing and e-learning, that includes anytime, anywhere resources; rich interaction; powerful support for effective learning; and performance-based assessment". [Clark Quinn, 2000] Source: m-learning is not about running multimedia training on a mobile phone m-learning is not just a media hype m-learning is not about playing games on a mobile phone m-learning is not about migrating e-learning content to mobile phones m-learning is not just learning over a Wifi or 3G connection Mobile Learning requires a Brand New MINDSET! 7
Why Mobile Learning? Mobile Learning Modules are created for students outside the normal classroom lessons, during the field trips, spare times (in between waiting for friends, wait for MRT, traveling in the MRT or bus, outing in a group while discussing certain common subjects etc.) Enhance learner success Real world skills Is a Lifestyle as mobile phones penetration rate in Singapore and some countries in Europe is more than 101% Access learning materials from anywhere, anytime Just-in-time learning/reference tool for quick access to data and learning materials in the field Opportunities to interact with others Encourage collaborate learning 8
The fact is that most primary students and almost every secondary student and teacher has a mobile phone or PDA. The good news is that almost all PDAs, mobile phones and smart mobile phones are equipped with built-in mobile web-browser. If bite-size Interactive Mobile Learning Modules were deployed to students, hundreds or even thousands will be benefited. The recent announcement by some governments to provide wireless broadband to the entire country will push the numbers of Mobile Learning penetration rate even higher as cost of data charges become non-issue. Mobile Learning facilitates: Study at any location, any time Students can learn more by creating content Knowledge transfer Reproduction is unlimited Distribution is economical Retention of content is possible Review is also portable Revision is simple Results can be tracked * Please read attached White Paper on Mobile Learning in the Classroom. 9
Douglas McConatha, Professor of Sociology West Chester University of Pennsylvania Mobile Learning in the Classroom: An Empirical Assessment of a New Tool for Students and Teachers Abstract Mobile Learning, or M-learning as it is often called, is a relatively new tool in the pedagogical arsenal to assist student and teachers as they navigate the options available in the expanding distance learning world. M-Learning is defined as the delivery of training by means of mobile devices such as Mobile Phones, PDAs and digital audio players, as well as digital cameras and voice recorders, pen scanners and other mobile devices 1. M- learners typically view lessons in small, manageable formats that can be undertaken when laptop or fixed station computers are unavailable It is currently being used in a variety of educational, governmental and industrial settings. This paper assesses some of the possible methods, challenges and future potential of using this approach in a college classroom. One hundred students in an introductory survey course in sociology were given the opportunity to use an M-Learning product developed by HotLava Software for the purpose if assisting them in preparation for two scheduled exams. Both practice and review questions were made available on Smart Phones, Web enabled phones, PDAs and other Internet capable mobile devices the via the Learning Mobile Author (LMA) software from HotLava. Forty-seven of the 100 students in the class chose to access these data via their personal devices and their responses were collected and recorded. The results of their performance, as indicated by a final grade in the course, were compared to the outcomes for those students who chose not to use the M-Learning tool. Students using the software demonstrated a higher level of knowledge of the subject matter covered in the course when compared to students choosing not to use the tools (p<.01). Conclusions and a discussion of these outcomes are offered as well as some inferences and speculation regarding the future of M-Learning in the classroom and beyond
