Task Description In the mathematics part of the task pupils are required to use their knowledge and understanding of the four rules to carry out calculations related to a camping trip and to plan a camping holiday for two adults and two children with a budget of In the Using ICT part of the task, pupils are provided with a spreadsheet which they use to investigate the cost of extras needed for camping by campers when they are at the camping sites. 1

2 Using Mathematics and Using ICT Level 4 Prior Knowledge/Experience Pupils should have experience of: Using Mathematics Using ICT Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers using a range of mental, written and calculator strategies; Using a website to find the cost of items; Making choices about spending and getting value for money; Performing calculations involvng unitary fractions (¼, ½, ⅓, ¹ 5); and Calculating simple percentages. Entering data into spreadsheet cells; Exploring and changing items in a spreadsheet; Investigating changing variables in a given spreadsheet to solve problems; Changing page setup; and saving their work appropriately and printing their work. It might be appropriate to link this to a term when there is a school trip or a topic about holidays. Pupils should be given opportunities to: Plan revise understanding of unitary fractions and simple percentages; revise using a calculator when working with money; study the price lists and discuss value for money; discuss factors which may influence your decisions; revise or find out about vocabulary for camping e.g. electric hook-up, pitch; 2

3 Using Mathematics and Using ICT Level 4 Do carry out a range of calculations based around a camping theme; carry out calculations using money accurately; interpret a calculator display when solving money problems; find the best value for money; create a plan for a budget; keep within a budget; consider and discuss changes to their spreadsheet and how these will affect the end result; make required adjustments to their spreadsheets to solve problems; Review explain their choices; compare their methods of working with others; demonstrate an awareness of the calculation that is carried out to find cost; discuss and reflect on the outcome of this task; and make adjustments if required. 7 Using Mathematics and Using ICT Level 4 Desirable Features Managing Data Level 4 Pupils can: make predictions and solve problems using a given spreadsheet; demonstrate an understanding of what is meant by the terms cell, formulae, rows and columns; use a range of sources, such as catalogues, internet sites, tables or lists to research the data needed to solve a problem; input data from their own research into a given spreadsheet; and answer simple questions by using SORT or using simple formulae such as + and -. 7

8 Part 1 Use the following pages to plan a holiday for two adults and two children for five nights. You have a budget of Petrol costs 15p per mile. 17 Part 2 A campsite can arrange activities for guests who stay with campers but they must be paid for. Sheet 1 of the Campsite Extras spreadsheet provided contains the activities available to guests. James, Elsa and Peter are guests of the Smith family who have agreed to pay for their activities for the week. For each of the children, enter the information into the spreadsheet and calculate the total cost to the Smith family. Give your work a name, save your spreadsheet and print out your work. James wants to: swim every day; take a bus trip on Sunday; book the tennis court on Thursday; hire a bicycle on Monday and Thursday; have rock climbing lessons on Wednesday and Friday; and hire a canoe on Tuesday. 17

20 Use Sheet 2 of the spreadsheet Campsite Extras provided to calculate the value of the increase and also Next Year s Price for each activity. Using the new prices for each activity, use Sheet 1 to calculate what the total cost would be for the following year for the three children. Research an extra activity that the children might want to do on holiday. Add the details of the activity to Sheet 1 of the spreadsheet.
