1 Class 2 Handbook Dear Parents, Welcome to the Year 2 class booklet, providing information about Class 2 over the coming year. Already we have been very busy and as the teacher I am looking forward to getting to know the children further and supporting them with their learning. I know that all of you want to support your child s experience at school as much as possible and I hope that you find the information provided in this booklet helpful. Miss Armitage Class Teacher: Miss J Armitage Class 2 Information Class Cover Teachers: Mr J Sykes ( - Games) Mrs G Aspinall (topic work) Every day, please ensure your child brings his/her... reading book and completed reading record book book bag clean drinking bottle with fresh water coat (unless we know for definite we re going to have full days of sunshine!) Important Days Days Monday: (gymnastics, dance or athletics with Miss Armitage) Thursday: (games with Mr Sykes) Please ensure that long hair is tied back and that earrings are removed on these days. kits should be taken home during half-term holidays to be washed. Violin Day Friday: I know it sounds obvious, but please ensure the violin is brought to school on this day as we don t possess any spare instruments.

4 Assessment: During the summer term in Year 2, your child will complete end of Key Stage 1 assessments in reading, writing and maths. The final assessment level will take into account performance in tasks and tests, but mainly ongoing teacher assessments. These levels will be submitted to the Department for Education and are used to predict the level your child will achieve at the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6). Homework Reading: Please listen to your child read every day for at least 10 minutes and complete the reading record book. Having been a class teacher for a few years, it is clear to me that children benefit enormously from regular reading practice at home, as well as at school. : This will be given on Friday. Please return completed pieces on Monday. Spellings: These will be given on Friday, ready for a test on the following Friday. : This will be given on Tuesday. Please return completed work on Friday. How can I help my child? Independence look after his/her own belongings. follow simple instructions for a task and stay focused until completion. log on to a computer, open a programme, save work and shut down. dress and undress independently (including tying shoelaces). hold a pen/pencil correctly. develop the art of conversation by listening to others, taking turns and speaking clearly. use a simple dictionary to find the spellings of words. read widely including fiction, non-fiction and simple poetry. sound out words (wherever possible). listen carefully to stories read to them (long live the bedtime story!) read for fun and for purpose e.g. jokes, comics, competitions, road signs etc. answer questions about his/her chosen reading material (please refer to the letter in your child s reading record book). go to the local library. write his/her full name and address
5 cook/bake with an adult to practise weighing out and mixing ingredients. count, read, write and order numbers beyond 20. count on and back in ones and in tens from any small number. know by heart all the pairs of numbers that have a total of 10 and 20. count in twos, fives and tens. recite the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. sequence the days of the week and the months of the year.
