1 Unit Plan - Fractions Unit Author First and Last Name School District School Name School City, State Allison Cooper (King) Putnam County Rock Branch Elementary School Rock Branch, WV Unit Overview Unit Title Fractions Unit Summary This unit has five lessons that aim to teach students how to simplify, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Each lesson builds on itself from basic knowledge to higher-order thinking. Students get to use many forms of technology and programs including the computer, SmartBoard, PowerPoint, video cameras, and more. Students will create a project in lesson 5 as the unit wraps up. Subject Area Elementary Mathematics Grade Level 5 th grade Approximate Time Needed Lesson 1: 55 minutes Lesson 2: 60 minutes Lesson 3: 60 minutes Lesson 4: 1 hour & 15 minutes Lesson 5: one 45 minute session and two 1-hour sessions Content Standards and Objectives M.5.NF.1 Students will add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. M.5.NF.2 Students will solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators. M.5.NF.3 Students will interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a divided by b) and solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers. M.5.NF.4 Students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction. M.5.NF.6 Students will solve real-world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers M.5.NF.7 Students will apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. a. interpret division of a unit fraction by a non-zero whole number and compute such quotients. b. interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction and compute such quotients. c. Lesson 2: - Students will add fractions with unlike denominators and reduce their answers to simplest form. - Students will apply their knowledge to real-world problems and complete the interactive presentation. Lesson 3: - Students will demonstrate how to subtract fractions. - Students will demonstrate a flipped classroom approach. Lesson 4: - Students will multiply fractions with whole numbers to calculate the amount of ingredients needed for a recipe to accommodate fifty guests. - Students will complete a Web Quest activity. Lesson 5: - Students will divide given fractions and simplify the answers. - Students will create a video or display demonstrating how to divide fractions. Curriculum-Framing Questions Why is it important to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions? Essential Question Unit Questions What are fractions? How can fractions be helpful to you? Can fractions be applied to real life? What are some ways that you can use fractions in everyday life? What are the four operations you can use with fractions? Content Questions Lesson 1: Why is it important to simplify fractions? What steps should you take when simplifying fractions? What are the definitions of numerator, denominator, LCM, GCF, and simplest form? Lesson 2: What are the proper steps to take when adding fractions? Lesson 3: Are the steps used in subtracting fractions any different than they are when adding fractions? How can fractions with different denominators be subtracted? Lesson 4: How do you multiply fractions? Is this the same as multiplying a fraction with a whole number? Lesson 5: What is the process used to divide fractions? Students get the chance to show what they know prior to lessons being taught. Informal formative assessments are done to make sure no student is falling behind and informal feedback will be given as I walk about the room during the lessons. After the lessons, students work is graded based on their calculations, participation, and discussion of what they know. In the last lesson, students will be assessed based on their understanding that is reflected in their project presentations. All students will be given a fair chance to show what they have learned. UNIT DETAILS Prerequisite Skills - Basic skills on an ipad (power on/off) - Basic use of a computer, Internet, and printer - How to use basic tools and programs on a computer (power on/off, typing on the keyboard, Microsoft Word, Internet) - How to use a video camera or regular camera Instructional Procedures Lesson One (Intro and Simplifying fractions): - Introduce topic by handing out concept map to students. - Go over terms by having students discuss and come up with definitions as a class. - Present slideshow online/teach material using slideshow. - Have students get ipads and get on Quizlet. - Have students practice simplifying fractions using Quizlet set (play the Scatter game) - Collect scrap paper that students worked out problems on. - Have a class discussion and review what students learned/take questions. Lesson Two (Adding Fractions): - Introduce topic by telling students what we will be learning and the affiliated standards. - Watch Khan Academy Video on adding fractions with unlike denominators. - Demonstrate examples and steps of adding fractions with unlike denominators using the Smart Board Notebook. - Show the interactive presentation (have students work out problems on their own paper then volunteers will explain the correct answer to each problem to the class). - Take up students papers. - Put students into groups of 4-5 students/hand out game materials. 4 - Present instructions and have students play one round of the game. - Have students clean up materials and go back to their seats. - Take up students papers and review the material. Lesson Three (Subtracting Fractions): - The day before the lesson, give students the flipped activity assignment handout and explain that this is homework. Explain that they are expected to come back to class having already learned the material. For the assignment, students must watch a Khan Academy video and then play the Scatter game with a Quizlet set that I made on subtracting fractions. They have to print out their score to prove that they played the game. - The next day, begin by reviewing the 2 flipped lesson activities. Collect the Quizlet printouts. - Have students write five word problems involving subtracting fractions. - Put students into pairs and have them exchange papers. Students must solve the word problems that are on their partner s paper. - Have a couple students read their word problems to the class and explain how they came to their answers. Use this to wrap up the lesson. Lesson Four (Multiplying Fractions): - Take students to computer lab and have them log onto the computers. - Tell the students that they will be individually completing a WebQuest on multiplying fractions. - Have the students navigate to the WebQuest URL. - Have students begin the WebQuest and answer any questions. - When everyone has completed the WebQuest, begin the student presentations. Lesson Five (Dividing Fractions): - Introduce topic and standards to students. - Do examples on the board to illustrate steps of dividing fractions. - Give students a worksheet to build understanding. - Collect student worksheets. - Put students into groups of 3-4 students each. - Explain project to students (In their groups, students will get to choose between two options: students can use a video camera to create a song explaining the same, change, flip process OR use a camera to take pictures of objects to display division of fractions and their answers. For example, a picture of two flowers and another picture of five pennies could represent the fraction 2/5 when put on top of each other. Students can use these pictures to make a display on a PowerPoint or poster board to represent the same, change, flip process. - Pass out Wordle handout to students to represent the terms and standards that we have covered in this unit.
