5 Course information The MSc in Computational and Software Techniques in Engineering is available in three specialist options. Students of each option complete four core mandatory modules - C++ Programming, Computational Methods, Management for Technology and Computer Graphics, followed by additional specialist modules specific to each option. Computational and Software Techniques in Engineering - Computer Aided Engineering MSc Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) is now playing a fundamental role in the design and manufacture of a diverse range of products for global industries, including automotive, aerospace, oil, defence and health. This course is ideal for candidates from engineering and applied mathematical backgrounds, and those with mathematical and computational sciences training, who wish to develop and complement their existing skill sets. The specialist modules are designed to provide the knowledge, programming techniques and practical skills necessary to develop and use core CAE solution software in diverse industrial settings. Computational and Software Techniques in Engineering - Digital Signal and Image Processing MSc In today s digital economy, the flow of data from an ever-increasing network of sensors, cameras, devices and autonomous systems means that intelligent image and signal analysis interpretation has never been more important. Mathematical and computational methods form the basis of the specialist modules, covering the theory and application of DSIP algorithms for the analysis, interpretation and processing of data in fields such as computer vision, robotics, vibro-acoustic condition monitoring, medical diagnosis, remote sensing and data visualisation. Computational and Software Techniques in Engineering - Software Engineering for Technical Computing MSc With today s sophisticated and powerful computer environments, the techniques needed to develop and produce the software to run on these systems are themselves becoming increasingly complex. This programme provides a unique insight into the development of computer applications across modern computing environments, from multi-core CPUs to specialist GPUs to cloud computing. The core modules provide the basis of the academic programme and act as a starting point for the more specialist modules to be introduced later on. They are intended to give you invaluable experience of delivering a project within an industry-structured team. Start Date September MSc The project allows you to develop a range of skills such as how to establish team member roles and responsibilities, project management, delivering technical presentations and gaining experience of working in teams with diverse expertise, and often with members who are based remotely. In today s software industry, many different specialists are required to contribute to the creation of the final product. Individual research project This allows you to delve deeper into an area of specific interest. All projects are based on real research, whether it is an area of interest for members of the department, or as part of an active research project funded by industry. In some cases our industrial partners sponsor specific research projects into real-world problems or areas of development that are of direct interest to them. In recent years, students have also proposed their own ideas for their project. You will generally begin to consider your project focus after completing four modules, with the project then running concurrently with the rest of your studies. 7 Academic staff Dr Antonios Antoniadis, Lecturer in Computational Engineering Science Antonios is a Lecturer in Computational Engineering Science, teaching Computational Fluid Dynamics methods and practices in several MSc courses. Amongst his clients are the European Commission, BAE Systems, EADS Augusta Westland and Jaguar Land Rover. Dr Karl Jenkins, Associate Professor and Head of Centre for Computational Engineering Fluids Karl is the Course Director for the MSc in Computational and Software Techniques in Engineering. Prior to coming to Cranfield his expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics and High Performance Computing resulted in a post-doctoral position at Cambridge University as the Sir Arthur Marshall Research Fellow. Dr Laszlo Konozsy, Lecturer Laszlo is a Researcher and Lecturer in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the Centre for Fluid Mechanics and Scientific Computing. He has a broad range of experience in different fields of CFD, heat transfer and computer programming for solving complex academic and industrial problems. Dr Irene Moulitsas, Lecturer in Scientific Computing Irene joined Cranfield University as a Lecturer in Scientific Computing in 2012 and is currently leading the MSc programme in Software Engineering for Technical Computing. Her research has focused on developing novel algorithms for enabling the efficient execution of large scientific computations on parallel processing platforms. Cranfield is already known around the world as an excellent University which opens the doors of prestigious firms, especially in the aviation sector. 8 How to apply Entry requirements Candidates must possess, or be expected to achieve a first or second class UK Honours degree in applied mathematics, aeronautical, mechanical or electrical engineering or computer science, or be applying as part of a recognised double-degree programme with their home EU institution, or the international equivalent of these UK qualifications. Some entry level C programming experience is advisable but not essential. Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may be considered. Where applicable, students must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
