4 Dr. Bharat Soni Vice President of Research and Economic Development Tennessee Tech University (TTU) Cookeville, TN address: A Brief Profile: Dr. Soni received his BS and MS degrees in Statistics with minor Operations Research and Econometrics from Maharaja Sayajirao University, India and doctoral degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Texas in After 2 years industry experience at Bell Helicopter Company, Texas and 7 years at Arnold Engineering Development Center, Arnold AFS, Tennessee as well as adjunct teaching at University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI), he joined the academic world at Mississippi State University (MSU) as an Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering in Until, June 30, 2002, He was the Director for the Center for Computational Systems (CCS), Engineering Research Center (ERC), and a Professor and Eminent Scholar of Aerospace Engineering at MSU. He joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as a Chair and Professor of Mechanical Engineering in July Effective August 1, 2013, he joined the Tennessee Technology University as the Vice President of Research and Economic Development. Dr. Soni's research interests include studies in computational science and engineering with an emphasis on computational field simulation, grid/mesh generation and adaptation, visualization and virtual reality, computer aided geometry design, multidisciplinary design and optimization, and high performance computing. The software modules (GENIE++, PMAG, GGTK, CAGI, HYB3D, CoreVR etc.) used for computational field simulations, immersive visualization and mesh generation and adaptation developed under his direction are widely used in the industry and academic institutions. Dr. Soni has a long history of contributions in cross-disciplinary research and education with strategic focus on research to build technologies to address 21 st Century engineering grand challenges: Advance Personalized Learning, Engineer the Tools of Scientific Discovery, Enhance Virtual Reality, and Develop Carbon Sequestration Methods covering a wide-spectrum of disciplines including aerospace, automotive, homeland security, energy and environment, healthcare, biomechanics, and biomedical and medical science. Dr. Soni led the establishment of the immersive visualization and Virtual Reality environment at UAB with applications to medical, health-care and general education and training, rehabilitation, engineering design, analysis, evaluation and marketing, and homeland security. He provided a leadership in building UAB High Performance Computing capabilities from less than 1 TeraFlops in 2002 to 11+ TeraFlops combined performance in Under Dr. Soni s leadership, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UAB was grown from $250K in annual research expenditures, 6 faculty members, and 70 undergraduate and 6 graduate students in 2002 to $4M in annual sponsored research expenditures, 19 faculty members, 7 research associates, and 250 undergraduate and 47 graduate students in spring Dr. Soni s group has well established collaborations with academic institutions and industry in the US, China, India, and Europe. The intellectual properties generated by his group have resulted in three spinoff commercial companies in Birmingham: VIPAAR (integrates remote expertise directly and indirectly into local field of operation), Amplicode (provides consulting and engineering support associated with computer aided geometry design and meshing to the engineering simulation community) and VSim- Global (Immersive Visualization and Virtual Reality Content and Software Development and
5 Applications Support). In 2010, he was recognized for Innovation and Economic Development by Alabama India Business Partnership Organization, Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Soni has been internationally recognized for his research, educational and professional services and contributions in the area of numerical grid generation and computational fluid dynamics. He has authored more than 170 publications and is a co-editor of the CRC Handbook of Grid Generation, published in He is an ASME Fellow and an Associate fellow of AIAA.
