Geometry is a mathematical system that develops from: undefined terms to definitions to postulates to theorems. With these laws and basic reasoning, students will learn how to make logical conclusions. At the end of this course, students should be able to write and plan proofs in a mathematical language and apply geometric ideas to the real world. We will cover topics such as points, lines, planes, proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, properties of triangles, congruent figures, similarity, area, surface area, volume, circle, and trigonometry. Materials Needed Textbook: Pearson Geometry Common Core A graphing calculator (TI-84) Binder (preferred) or a folder to keep handouts and homework organized Your device CHARGED and ready to go for class (Tablet or Laptop) Loose-leaf for homework and graph paper is optional Pencils for completing work Highlighters (recommended) LAPs All students will receive a LAP at the beginning of each chapter. I will have these printed for you, it is not necessary for you to print your own. You only need to print a new one if you have misplaced yours. LAPs can be found on my website as well as lessons notes and handouts. COURSE OVERVIEW FALL SEMESTER Tools of Geometry Reasoning and Proof Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Congruent Triangles Relationships within Triangles SPRING SEMESTER Polygons and Quadrilaterals Similarity Right Triangle and Trigonometry Transformations Area Surface Area and Volume Circles Probability (if time allows)

2 Absences You have a LAP so you should aware of the assignments and topics covered in class when you are absent. You should NOT come to me and ask what you missed. You should already know by looking at your LAP as well as accessing my website. It is my expectation you reference your LAP and my website to know what has been covered. If we are starting a new LAP, it will be posted on my website. It is your responsibility to gather assignments and notes from missed classes as well as schedule times during open lab, before, or after school to go over missed material. When you return to school, you should turn in any homework you were PRESENT for the lessons, and the class had already turned in. If you are absent multiple days, come see me. Together, we will arrange a schedule to complete all assignments or assessments missed. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT: Reference your LAP to know what topic/activity you are missing. Access Ms. Treese s Weebly for any notes or new LAPs. Ms. Treese about your absence and communicating when you would like to meet to go over the missed material or reschedule a test. Go see Ms. Treese to go over missed material and turn in homework already due. Student Expectations 1. RESPECT. I expect you to respect me, respect your peers, respect this classroom, respect prayer time, and respect yourself. 2. LISTEN. This goes along with respect. One of my pet peeves is listening. We are each a unique person made of variety of thoughts and experiences. Each person has something valuable and worthwhile to say. I will NOT TOLERATE my students showing disrespect by not listening. 3. BE A STUDENT. I expect you to complete homework, study for tests and quizzes, participate in class discussion, learn, come to class with necessary materials, arrive ready to learn, and to have FUN! 4. HAVE AN OPEN MIND. Math can be difficult but come to this year with an open mind. Give math and this class a chance. Throughout the year, we will have discussions in groups. I want you to keep an open mind when hearing different ideas. Grading Your grade will be broken down into 3 categories: Summative Assessments, Formative Assessments, and Final Exam. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS Homework When we cover a new lesson, you will be assigned homework. This homework is expected to be completed the following class period. (At the end of the syllabus is IWA s Late Work Policy). The answers will be posted on my website after the homework is due. Each homework assignment will be graded for accuracy, completion, or both.

3 Quizzes Quizzes over Class Material The LAPs will include quizzes to ensure knowledge of the material we have covered so far. In order to take the quiz, any of the homework from those sections should have been completed. If you do not have the homework completed, you will have to sign up on my open lab schedule with your class color to make up the quiz and/or ensure the homework is completed. ACT PREP You will take an ACT Prep quiz once a cycle which will require to come to my open lab. These quizzes are graded for completion (until second semester) and are each 10 questions long. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS Tests At the end of each LAP, you will have a summative assessment (test). You will take these assessments in the testing center. You will have three days after the review day. At times, tests will be split into non-calculator and calculator sections. Projects Any projects assigned throughout the year will also fall under summative assessments since they will be projects in which students will demonstrate their understanding of the material covered. FINAL EXAM Final Exam At the end of the each semester, fall and spring, you will have a comprehensive exam for the semester which will be 15% of your overall grade. FIELD TRIPS If your grade is below a 70%, I WILL NOT approve you to miss class and attend a field trip for another class. MS. 4 Incarnate Word Academy Grading Information To ensure accurate reporting in grades, all teachers at IWA will categorize assignments and assessments into two categories: Formative and Summative. You will distinguish between the two because all Summative Assessments will be designated as so in the teacher s grade books. Formative assessments are on-going assessments in a classroom and can include homework, open lab activities, quizzes, and class work. Teachers use formative assessment to improve instructional methods and student feedback throughout the teaching and learning process. Summative assessments are typically used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs and services at the end of an academic year or at a pre-determined time, such as at the end of each LAP. Summative assessments would be considered LAP tests, culminating projects, presentations, tests, and exams. The goal of summative assessments is to make a judgment of student competency after an instructional phase is complete. Summative evaluations are used to determine if students have mastered specific competencies and to identify instructional areas that need additional work. On Summative assignments no student can earn lower than 50%. Gradebook: Beginning in the school year all teachers will have a common gradebook established by the school. The gradebook will have three sections: formative, summative, and final exam. Starting in the school year all teachers will operate using a total points system. Final exams must be 15% of the overall point value. Summatives & the end of the semester: No new summatives may be given, assigned or due the last week of the semester. The final days of the semester should be used for continued teaching if there is material that will appear on the final. Review of the semester/year or enrichment types of activities that allow our students to think critically or work on materials that stretch them. 1 st Semester Last day for any new summatives to be due: o All levels December 8 2 nd Semester Last day for any new summatives to be due: o Seniors April 26 o Juniors April 27 o Freshmen and Sophomores May 11 Score Codes used for Individual Assignments: ABSENT: This means that the student was absent the day the activity was due. (This counts as a zero until the assignment is turned in.) LATE: This means that the student was in class the day the activity was due, but did not turn in the assignment. (This counts as a zero until the assignment is turned in.) EXCUSED (EXC): This means that the student has been excused from completing this assignment. (This has no effect on the grade.) REDO: This means a summative assessment has been taken but failed. This requires a student to retake or redo the assessment according to the class policy. The REDO score code is tied to a 50%. (continue on next page)

5 Turned In Not Graded (TING): This means the summative assignment has been received by the teacher and is in the process of being graded. This acronym (TING) will only be used for summative assessments that will require a lengthy grading process. It will not be used for daily assignments. I (INCOMPLETE): This means that the summative is incomplete. The I is tied to a zero. Score Codes used in the Final Score Column Only: RD: This means a summative assessment has been taken but failed. This requires a student to redo the assessment according to the policy. I (INCOMPLETE): This means a student has missed a summative assessment and her overall grade is frozen until the summative is completed. Once a student has been given an INCOMPLETE for a missed summative; upcoming assignments should be graded, scored, and recorded. Formative Assessment Late Work policy: During the course of each QUARTER, a student will have one NLP (No Late Penalty) assignment. When the late assignment is turned in, no late points will be deducted. If multiple assignments are missing and then turned in late, the NLP will be given to the assignment worth the most points. Any formative assignment not turned in will always be due by the end of next LAP for partial credit. This will be listed on the next LAP. If work is turned in late, 50% is the only grade a student can receive. After the next LAP ends, assignments not turned in will be given a zero and will no longer be able to be turned in for credit.
