2 General Primary Secondary Events-CCA School Clinic Recycled Fashion Show-Primary School May 2nd saw another successful Recycled Fashion Show excite the school community. As the morning began, all sorts of creatures streamed into the school, made from newspapers, plastic bottles, bowls and re purposed trash. The commitment and creativity of our parent body was on display at three assemblies where each student had a chance to parade on the catwalk. For the first time, students were then invited to vote for their favourite item from their class and the winners were awarded a small succulent plant to continue our pledge to add green space to our community. A big thank you must go to the Eco Team students who ran the fashion show and to PARIS for the generous donation of prizes. We'll see you all again next year!

3 News from Grade 3 It was an extremely busy time in Grade 3 before the spring break. In collaboration with grade 2, grade 3 performed Little Red Riding Hood for two nights before spring break. A wonderful performance was put on by our students both nights and they displayed enthusiasm and commitment both evenings. The musical was enjoyed thoroughly by both parents and teachers. To recognize their hard work, the students were rewarded with a movie and popcorn filled afternoon. A big special thank you to Ms. Aliaa, Mr Fadi and Ms. Natalie for their efforts with the school musical. We have had a wonderful time exploring our new unit of how movement and sound can be used creatively. Grade 3 had the pleasure of Dubai Drums visiting our school and where our school hosted an African drumming workshop. Students explored the different sounds and rhythms that an African drum can produce and illustrated how certain rhythms and beats can make them feel. The drumming workshop was one of the highlights of our unit so far! The excitement and learning continued when we had the pleasure of having exstudent Teadora Cotirlan return to our school. She performed a truly wonderful ballet performance for all of the Grade 3 students. She also choreographed a contemporary dance for our students to take part in. This enabled our students to use their thinking skill and communication skills. They certainly enjoyed this experience. Our inaugural careers day took place throughout the school and proved to be a major success. Our Grade 3 students dressed up in some amazing costumes such as doctors, nurses, policemen, dancers, footballers, astronauts and scientists. The students were also lucky enough to be given a talk by Chitra Ravi and Melissa Welsh, two professional dancers. Chitra, a former electrical engineer, left her job to pursue her dream as a dancer and has not looked back since. Melissa is contemporary dancer with her own dance academy in Dubai. Our students were treated to some vibrant dance moves and identified what it is like to be a professional dancer.

4 Sports Update This term has been one of our busiest in terms of sport matches and competitions with our Basketball squads finishing their league games as well as badminton, table tennis, swimming, cricket and rounder s. Our rounder s squad finished on a high last Thursday winning 20-2 against Hartland school. Our winning streak continued for our boys basketball team against NAS winning 10-5 with Orestis (Grade 3A) displaying fantastic shooting skills, taking player of the match. The IVEI table tennis league took place at RIS school on Sunday 7 th May showcasing RWA to be the champions, particularly Benjamin in Grade 5B who won all his individual games. We hope to continue this great show of talent and teamwork in our final few competitions. Go Stallions. Our sport leaders in grade 5 have also had an exciting term visiting IFLY Dubai in Mirdiff Mall. The students got to experience skydiving in a simulator as well as test their rock climbing and bowling skills. A big thank you also goes to our grade 4 sport leaders Brooke and Michael who continue to work hard on handing out certificates to sports teams and in general being extremely proactive in helping with the smooth running of our sports teams. 5 Learning and developing their skills in Arabic Arabic A students are still completing their academic year smoothly and happy during their learning and developing their skills in Arabic, they learnt different topics and match it to their daily life, they do a lot of activates during their Arabic lessons, they visiting library once a week, and read different kinds of books and stories, they are working very hard improve their reading skills. Grade five students were working very hard on their exhibition and this year they record videos in Arabic related to their central idea. 6 Learning and developing their skills in Arabic Communicating our feelings allows us to inform the other person of something he or she may have said or done and how it made you feel. Whether it's about something small or a bigger concern, taking the time to communicate our feelings and thoughts builds understanding, trust and a stronger bond between two people. It s important to be open and honest when we communicate our feelings to others. Communication may seem easy. However, it involves more than merely putting words together to form sentences. Communicating with others not only includes the words that come out of our mouths, it also includes our body language or listening/attending skills and the tone we use. Research shows that certain communication behaviors enable us to send messages more accurately and effectively. In turn, this may result in more satisfying communication and better problem solving, with a joint effort to find solutions that work for both parties. One of the skills we need in order to communicate effectively with others is being able to share our thoughts in a clear, honest and assertive way. The essence of appropriate assertiveness is being able to state our case without arousing the defenses of the other person. The secret of success lies in saying how it is for us rather than what they should or shouldn t do. When we want to say something but don t know what will help, the I statement formula is a good step in the right direction. The I statement is not about being polite, not to do with soft or nice, nor should it be rude. It s about being clear. It s a conversation opener, not the resolution. I messages are most simply explained as a way of expressing our thoughts and emotions about a specific experience or interaction using a soft voice and a statement that often begins with, I feel. I messages can be an effective tool in deescalating defensiveness and improving communication within relationships. In contrast, statements that begin with you tend to evoke defensiveness and an escalation of emotions rather than a desire to compromise and problem solve. An I message consists of three parts: 1) the specific behavior 2) the resulting feeling you experienced because of the behavior and 3) the effect of the behavior on you. Therefore, I statements build trust between people and, in turn, build their relationship. For example, "I feel ignored when you don't look at me while I'm talking." This is much easier for someone to hear than "You're ignoring me." Try using I statements with your children (and teaching them the same) and see if this can help them in these type of situations. 7 General Primary Secondary Events-CCA School School Clinic Clinic Dear Parents and Students, Co-Curricular Activities The last day of co-curricular activities at our school will be May 18. Some paid providers might decide to hold some extra sessions after this date to make up for missed sessions from semester two. Please make it a point to talk to them to find out the dates of these sessions if they are to take place. Events Corner Sophia and Nada at TEDx The visiting speakers from RIS We are now in the final stretch as far as events are concerned. The two main events to look forward to are the primary school debate on May 10 at Collegiate American School and the Art Competition on May 25 being held at Raffles International School. The staff and students of Raffles World Academy are in the meantime still basking in the success of two recent events that they recently hosted. The annual TEDx Youth and the Recycling Fashion Show were two great events showcasing our students organisational skills and also highlighting their love for public speaking and the environment. Both events invited students from all Innoventures Education schools and were highlights of our academic year. Our sincere appreciation goes out to the E-Team, the TEDx team, Mr Mohammed Haneef, Ms Bridget Haines, Mr Shane Williams and Ms Chrouk Dbyan for their efforts with these two great events.
