3 JUNE/JULY 2016 THE CHAMBER MATTERS 3 From the Executive Office... Summertime In Caldwell O nce again summertime is here, with all the wonderful things it brings. Fresh produce, beautiful flowers, outstanding scenery, opportunities for biking, hiking, boating, swimming, wine tasting, art, music, culture all right here in our community! What a great place to live! Our theme for this issue, Summer FUN In Caldwell County only touches the surface of things to do and see this summer. From concerts and movies to festivals and tours, we ve got you covered with many free things to do in the area with the whole family. We ve showcased a few for you in this issue but no way were we able to get you information on everything. Many other events and happenings can be found on the s community calendar which you can find at Also check Caldwell Arts Council events at and the NC Agricultural Extension and 4-H programs at The websites of all our towns and cities in the county are good sources of information, especially recreational programs. Throughout the summer you ll find live music on Friday nights in downtown Lenoir, and bring your entire family to downtown Lenoir on the 1st Saturday evening of each Blue Ridge Hospitality Training Gracious Hospitality Over 30 individuals from a variety of businesses attended the Blue Ridge Hospitality Training at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center on April 12, Through a partnership with Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, The Biltmore Company, and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Blue Ridge Hospitality training was provided to interested individuals of Caldwell County who serve our visitors in the hospitality industry. Blue Ridge Hospitality Training addressed both the customer service skills and knowledge of the area. The program was funded through grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), Duke Energy, and the Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative Foundation, with partnership contributions from Biltmore and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. The Reality Store On March 21 eighth grade students in Caldwell County learned how education equals quality of life! After taking career assessments on the CFNC.org website every eighth grade student in the month through October to the Lenoir Cruiser s Classic Car Show over 400 cars line the streets, it s fun for the whole family and one of the state s best summertime classic car shows. Fireworks will light up the sky and music will fill the air as the our cities and towns and civic groups celebrate the Fourth of July 2016 the old-fashioned way Then comes the BIGGEST Festival of the summer. On Friday and Saturday, July 8 & 9, the fifteenth annual North Carolina Blackberry Festival will be in downtown Lenoir. Growing up in Caldwell County, blackberries were a part of every summer. We used to go pick from the wild berries lining every bank. Mom s blackberry cobblers and jams are a strong part of our local heritage. The North Carolina Blackberry Festival offers summer memories and fun to all visitors without the chiggers! Lineberger Farms will be on hand during the day with fresh blackberries for sale, along with other blackberry items. There will also be arts and crafts for sale, music, beauty, baking and eating competition and live music. A variety of food vendors will be available and local restaurants will be open. It all kicks off on Friday evening, July 8th, with a Pre-Heat party which includes a beer garden, live music and a 5K/Fun run Happenings fundraiser for The Shelter Home. (A detail schedule is included on page 5.) People of all ages tend to enjoy nature activities. Nature walks give individuals the opportunity to be out in the open air while learning more about nature: plants, insects, trees, birds and other wildlife. Enjoy our many municipal parks and the miles of Caldwell County Pathways trails. For the more adventuresome, don t forget to visit the Wilson Creek area and explore all the trails available in the Pisgah Forest. Oh, and while you are on those hikes I m sure you ll be taking a picnic lunch along. Picnics are always big part of our summer outings. Heed the warnings regarding the dangers of food poisoning on page. I ve run out of my allotted space, just remember farmer s markets every week in Lenoir and Sawmills, group bike rides (Luna Cycles in Lenoir), free family movies in Lenoir, 5K/10K runs (Lenoir Parks and Recreation and Shelter Home Glow Run)..too much to list, check it out at summer. Ralph Prestwood Have FUN this county purchased life for one month. Students soon learned how much of the months pay check went to taxes, how expensive it is to have a family, and that the little extras in life are not always possible. Over 150 volunteers came from around the county to help students make wise decisions. High school business students, business and industry, and school system employees made the event possible. The event is done in partnership with Communities In Schools, Caldwell County Schools, and the Caldwell of Commerce. Meet the Sharks Sixteen teams of students in middle and high school competed on April 26 at the Broyhill Civic Center. Projects ran from engineering to new business adventures. A panel of community business and industry volunteers judged the presentations. An awards luncheon followed the presentations and students were recognized for his/her achievements; a 1st and 2nd place metal was awarded in each category. First place students will be traveling to the American Underground in Durham, NC.
