2 Visiting Rotarians and Guests: Lisa Sackett, on the Volunteer Task Force for Homeless Families in Bedford, guest of Bill President Pete s Rotary Moment(s): President Pete was gone for six days in San Diego and found himself reflecting that because of the continual coverage of Stefane Todeschini s game-winning kick (on the local TV show Bedford Common, in the Lowell Sun, The Bedford Minuteman, The Bedford Citizen), Rotary has also gotten continuous mention. Nice! ESSEX: New rules Speaking of exchange students and the value the exchange program brings, Kevin had sobering news for us. Because the Brookline club was unable to line up host families and other issues, the student slated for exchange from Quebec had to return home, a true shame. Understandably, to avoid this happening again, the rules for accepting exchange students will tighten. In order for the District to continue hosting exchange students, clubs will have to commit to having confirmed host families, securing the local school s approval, and having the club members full support before a student can be placed. Breakfast with Santa: LAST CALL FOR HELP on placemat ads and silent auction items. If you re unaware of what your assignments might be, please consult the Breakfast with Santa google.doc or get in touch with Christine. Let s equal last year or better! Silent Auction items need to be in by the 5 th ; they can be dropped off at Middlesex Bank. Help will be needed on Saturday, December 8, from 3-5 p.m. for setup. On Sunday, December 9, the day will start at 6 a.m. and then we re all systems go! The Season for Giving has many, many options for us: Interact is sponsoring one of the homeless families at Bedford Plaza. The family includes a 6- year-old who needs a size 6 coat and likes fast (toy) cars and Angry Birds. There is also a 2-yearold. Gift cards for the family are a good and useful way to go. If you wish to help, you can drop off gifts at Bedford High School mention they re for Interact or for the attention of Janel Halupowski, guidance counselor. Toys for Tots: We ll have a donation bin for Toys for Tots at Breakfast for Santa. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to Breakfast with Santa if you can. Age range: there are more small kids than older kids who will be receiving gifts. Toys will go to all 120 children living at the Bedford Plaza; Andrea is looking for volunteers to help with pickup please contact her. Mitten Tree at Middlesex Bank: Melinda noted that if you want to donate mittens, or scarves, or hats to people in need, there is now a mitten tree at Middlesex Bank where they can be hung until it s time for Santa. The Concord Band Holiday Pops Concert is on Friday, December 7 th, 8:00 p.m., at 51 Walden Street in Concord, followed by a holiday gathering at the home of Bob and Carolyn Cassidy. Tickets for the concert are $25 per adult ($15 for children).

3 Presentations! Mark C. and Steve McD. both received their white Bedford Rotary Club polo shirts, ready for their first wearing this Sunday. Nothing says welcome like a shirt with your name embroidered into it. The newsletter editor missed the opportunity to take a photo of this important awarding of the shirts, so in lieu of that, took a photo of another important clothing-related event today: the similar attire of next year s President-Elect Kevin Sullivan and next year s Assistant Treasurer Melinda Nicholson, who noted that all the cool people were wearing argyle. (Editor s note: Anyone wearing a white Bedford Rotary Club polo shirt is also incredibly cool.) New Generations Youth Programs: Best Practices to Build Rotary Youth Programs. Reminder: if you plan to work with youth in programs such as RYLA, Youth Exchange or Interact, you will need to take a mandatory training. On Friday evening, December 7, you will receive training in Youth Protection from a representataive from ESSEX, our Youth Exchange oversight organization On Saturday, December 8 there is a multi-district meeting which will share best practices for managing and growing. Rotary s youth programs, at the Boxborough Holiday Inn, starting at 8:00 a.m. You can sign up on the District Web site. The Rotary Foundation: Susanna had a Rotary Foundation moment and promised moolah in the happy dollars bucket if anyone could correctly identify the name of the first grantee of The Rotary Foundation. Bob C. knew that the International Society for Crippled Children later grew into the Easter Seals. Congrats to Bob. Other factoids: The Rotary Foundation was founded in 1918 by RI President Arch C. Klumph and the first donation was $ Club Assembly and Elections: The slate for officers, directors and trustees for the year was presented and approved after clarification on the exact terms of the three co-presidents (Bob C., Victor, Margarita) in regard to their being on the Board of Directors and on the Bedford Rotary Foundation. [They will each serve a full year as a director on the Board; each will serve as a Trustee only during the four months of their active presidency.) 4 thank the club membership for its willingness to step up and participate! President Pete reminded us of the goals for this year and updated us on progress: o Engage every member in 3 club projects this is really about thinking about your personal goals - think about what you want to be involved in o Expand local project support to $40,000 there are multiple ways in which we expend service and dollars o One new large-scale project in Bedford the Community Needs Assessment Committee is working, and there are several areas that may be fruitful, including transportation and homelessness o Grow club membership to 35 substantial progress has been made, but we re not there yet o Foundation donation from every member accomplished because of the $1000 Bedford Rotary Foundation grant to support a Rotary Foundation project in Kosovo and the decision to divide that contribution among all the members we ve achieved that goal on paper, but every member is encouraged to make his or her own contribution and receive the remaining match from our club foundation o Presidential Citation this is the criteria set out by the current RI President, Sakuji Tanaka, and includes a club project which will promote peace This last item led to the final item on President Pete s agenda a proposed Pay It Forward Day. The club indicated its support and three members (Linda, Diana, Susanna) volunteered to be part of a committee to begin planning. Community groups would be brought in to participate and this will be a major effort. Questions need to be resolved as to whether this would be strictly a service project or a potential fund raiser. There is pre-packaged starter material and an organization on which we would draw. See Raffles and Happy Dollars: As if welcoming the arrival of Mika Eve wasn t enough, Mark C. won the door prize. Not sure those two things actually compare. Victor tried for the 50/50, but the pot is continuing to build. Upcoming raffle prize donors, more or less, are: Nat, Bob C., Mark C. As our president said, Let s monetize happiness! Which we did: Jacquelin loves being a greeter; Jim put in an apologetic dollar for being late but a happy dollar for watching Bob M. at the party on Friday night; Britton was glad for a refreshingly on-pitch song led by Linda; Joe was glad for the warm weather; Bill was glad for our guest Lisa and was very busy last weekend saving Wisconsin from wild pheasant; Christine will come back to earth next week and in the meantime didn t know why she was happy; Melinda s happy because of her bank setting up the mitten tree; Lynne was happy to be here, Steve McD. was happy for the great time with the Concord club at the Thanksgiving Luncheon and gave praise to the great job the Doubletree did; he was also happy for his new shirt; Linda was glad she and her husband finally found the right boat for a company party harbor cruise; Bob C. praised Linda for her excellent song leading and was also happy for Bob Mead s big smile on Friday; Mark C. was glad for his new shirt and for the arrival of daughter Mika Eve; Cliff gave blood this weekend and that made him feel good and he noted that Rotary was mentioned not once, but twice, in the newspaper this week; Victor and Sze-Wen are going to the Rose Bowl! His daughter Christine called with the news that Stanford will be playing; Andrea had 4 happy quarters just for being here; Susanna put in her promised $5 for the TRF question; Diana is happy for this time of year; Bob was glad for the arrival of his 9 th great-grand-child, with a 10 th expected in January; Ralph was thrilled that the last

5 easement has been granted to complete the Circuit Trail!; Kevin is going through his history books to save up for his Rotary moments in another year; Peter praised Christine and Melinda for the great job they ve done in herding cats while pulling together Breakfast with Santa; Joel was happy to be here.
