Sightseeing Buenos Aires, Argentina Beunos Aries Mix together a beautiful Europeanlike city with attractive residents (call them porteños), gourmet cuisine, superb shopping, a frenzied nightlife and tons of activities, and you get Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan metropolis with both slick neighborhoods and equally downtrodden areas but that s part of the appeal. It s an elegant, seductive place with a ragged edge, laced with old-world languor and yet full of contemporary attitude. Buenos Aires is somehow strangely familiar, but unlike any other city in the world. In between cutting-edge designer boutiques, ritzy neighborhoods and grand parks are unkempt streets full of spewing buses and bustling fervor. Seek out classic old-world cafés, colonial architecture, fun outdoor markets and diverse communities. Rub shoulders with the formerly rich and famous in Recoleta s cemetery, making sure to sidestep the ubiquitous dog piles on the sidewalks. Fill your belly at a parrilla (steak restaurant), then spend the night dancing away in Palermo s Viejo s trendiest dance club. Everyone knows someone who has been here and raved about it. You ve put it off long enough. Make Buenos Aires your travel destination and you ll understand why so many people have fallen in love with this amazing city, and even decided to stay. There s a good chance you ll be one of them. Are you ready for a vacation of a lifetime? Visit Buenos Aires! Cool Facts about Buenos Aires The Tango originated here Home of former tennis great Gabriela Sabatini The standard greeting is a kiss Gabriela Sabatini Page.1

Mayan Doomsday Passed the Mayan Doomsday Deadline? What Does it Mean? Post Doomsday We made it folks! The Mayan Doomsday prophecy deadline has come and gone. As we awoke on the morning of December 22 nd, 2012 many of us took a look around our bedrooms, checked our images in the mirror, tentatively opened the front door and took a peek outside. Just to make sure this wasn t some sort of post-apocalyptic dream, some of us turned on the news to make sure our senses weren t deceiving us and to get the post-monday morning quarterback-like news about what turned out to be a big scare for nothing. You might ask why look to the news? As many news agencies, media outlets, websites, and movies abound in writing about the subject. Good point! Why? That s how the media operates, sensationalism and ratings. Fear sells! These doomsday prophesies are nothing new. They have been going on since the beginning of time. In fact, some historians claim that Christ s main teaching pertained to warnings to repent as the end was near. Many of us may have grown up in a Cold War climate in which a Soviet nuclear attack was imminent. Or, do you remember all the talk about a 2 nd Ice Age? The prophecies aren t fascinating. In fact, some day one will surely turn out to be true as the Earth can t go on forever. However, what is fascinating is the human mind and how easily we re fooled, over and over again. Don t worry though, we re not stupid. It s human nature. The lesson is, don t necessarily believe everything you read all of the time! And, oh yeah, I heard the next deadline is Page.2

Café Talk International Cafe Celebrating Jamaica with Jerk Chicken Mrs. Brown s Jerk Chicken The International Café has been going strong. This month we honored Jamaica, Poland, and Italy. We also had a good ole American cookies and hot chocolate café. The boys have been eager to discuss international themes while tasting some multinational snacks. Next up is French Canadian poutine (fries, cheese, & gravy). Italian Brushetta Page.3

Faculty Profile Sims World of Art Patti Sims Mrs. Sims art room is in the north wing of the academic building. It is located in the back end, along a long corridor, nestled snuggly in an isolated area that is hard to find. This obscure room is where our art teacher works her magic. One can observe little treasures of art displayed throughout the halls of the academic building. Some might think: Our kids did that? Not that our boys do not have any artistic talent; just that what is displayed is terrific and seems as though it has been produced by professionals, even art masters. Well, not that I could name any of them, but the work up on the walls looks pretty darn good to me. Patti Sims comes from just down the street in the quaint town of Concord. She is the proud mother of three lovely young ladies; two of which are in college and one who works as a software engineer. Mrs. Sims hobbies include rowing and ice skating. She likes everything that has to do with art. She spends time at home playing with art stuff and experimenting with textiles, paint, and paper. Mrs. Sims passion is art and she gets energized when a student says I m horrible in art. She loves the challenge of bringing out what she calls everyone s creative side. She wants to make sure that no one misses the chance to find out how amazing their ideas are. Well, Mrs. Sims artistic energy is obvious. Having her positive and creative spirit around here has made Hillside a better place. Keep on putting up those artistic treasures from our little creative geniuses. They are much appreciated! Cool Facts about Mrs. Sims She s competed in Masters rowing competitions She has a 12 acre farm in Grafton Has sold her artwork in galleries Page.4

Culture Night Culture Night: Westborough Korean Restaurant Cool Facts about Korea The number 4 is considered to be unlucky in Korea When children are born they are considered to be 1 year old One Saturday night in January proved to be delicious, fun, and a taste of Korean cuisine and culture. We went to a small restaurant in Westborough and could only take 14 people which are the amount of students allowed in one Hillside bus. Despite the small number, one would think that all 14 kids signed up were South Korean nationals. This was not the case. We had a brilliant mix of South Korean, Chinese, American, and Japanese boys. The food was terrific. Some of the boys who tried Korean food for the first time are now converts. Women keep their surnames after marriage Page.5

More Faculty Mr. Sedney Mrs. Dolan Patrick Sedney is our popular science teacher. He lives on campus at Whittemore House. He is one of our science gurus and an outdoor enthusiast, a runner, and an allaround easy going guy who quietly goes about his business. Well, he s quiet until he s out there on the athletic field. Then, this mild mannered scientist becomes a raging pitbull. If you ve ever seen one of the faculty-student basketball games, you know that Mr. Sedney plays a brand of inyour face junkyard dog defense at hypersonic speed. Beware varsity team, he may look harmless, but when Seds gets out on the court it s all business. And it s not just basketball, he brings the same intensity to soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and anything else he plays. Mr. Sedney played that way back in his days at Lawrenceville. That s right, he was a student at one of the finest prep schools in the country. But, don t worry! If you haven t met him, he s one of the friendliest and nicest guys you will meet. Just don t challenge him to a game of one on one. Megan Dolan is the name of our first year librarian. She comes from that wonderful city in Pennsylvania known for chocolate and hockey, Hershey. She is also a proud mother of two young daughters who can be seen in photos if anybody happens to wander by her desk in the library. Although this is her first year at Hillside, she is not new to the independent school world. She had worked for 5 years at a prep school in Washington, D.C. before moving to the Boston area. As a young lady she had studied for a semester in Barcelona Spain, where she and her family plan to return this summer for a vacation and to visit her inlaws. Wow! Barcelona! The Spanish city is one of the jewels of Western Europe and host to the 1992 summer Olympics. Mrs. Dolan has that reserved librarian look about her, but when one meets her it becomes obvious pretty quickly that she is a lively person with a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. Moreover, she is a great librarian. We are lucky to have her here at Hillside! Page.7

Multicultural Learning Multicultural Learning Globally Interconnected technological Back in the day learning was about lecturing and memorization. I remember sitting in my high school history class and our lesson was listening to the teacher then copying down the notes on the board. That was it! Today, things are different. Knowledge is considered multidimensional and involves the perspectives of many. Moreover, learning is interactive and creative; it utilizes skills such as analyzing, comparing, and synthesizing information; something, by the way, we had absolutely no practice in doing way back when. Today s educators are preparing students for a globally interconnected world that is technologically advanced and collaborative. Jobs are changing so rapidly that essentially teachers are preparing students for careers that don t even exist yet. Wow! Free of racism & discrimination Critically thinking Multi-perspective collaborative Creative Page.8

Spotlight Student Profiles MinWoo Wookie Kim Minwoo Minwoo Wookie Kim is like a teaching assistant. He is in my ESL 5-6 class and helps the kids with their English acquisition. Have you ever heard of an 12 year old assistant? Well, this kid has the makings of one fine English teacher. He loves language and is particularly eager to score well on all of his assignments. In fact, he has complained about his grade after receiving a 96 and specifically told my wife that Mr. Brown didn t give me a 100. Wow, talk about pressure grading papers, but you have to admire his perfectionism. I do not think that I have ever seen him miss a homework assignment and he is alert, intelligent, and enthusiastic in class. Wookie was born in Seoul, South Korea. If you ve never been to this frenetic and exhilarating city, I suggest you go. I spent a lot of time here a decade ago and it ranks as one of my all-time favorite cities. Minwoo s father is Tae Yun and his mother is Yoon Hee. They are both dermatologists in the capital city. Could you imagine that? Parents as dermatologists? Maybe next to having mom and dad as movie stars, this may be a teenager s dream; flawless skin as one makes his or her way through the teenage years. Minwoo s hobby is ping pong. If you ve been to the ATL on the weekend, you would know that Wookie is pretty hard to beat and consistently ranks in the top 5 for the younger kids. He s got a mean serve and good ground strokes. He also doesn t like to lose which makes him a particularly tough opponent. He s forever playing the older kids and holding his own. Besides ping pong he seems to like Seoul computer games and Korean comic books. He s an avid reader both in English and Korean. He came to Hillside because in his words it has a good academic system and he wanted to experience life in the American boarding school system. Well, we re glad he came. In my ESL class he has been a standout and his smiling face and friendly Panda demeanor have been much appreciated around these parts and have drawn comparisons to the beloved panda. In the future Minwoo wants to be a scientist. I m sure that would make Mr. Bryant proud. His hero is Albert Einstein. Ole Albert posited a remarkable relativity theory back in the day. It has stood as one of the two pillars of modern physics. Speaking of remarkable and pillars, it is fair to say that Minwoo Kim has stood as a pillar member of the Hillside community for the past 3 years. Remarkable! Page.9

Spotlight Student Profiles Kimani Lawrence Kimani was born in Providence Rhode Island. That s the same hometown as his teammate and star guard Donovan Theme. This city turns out great basketball players and for us, here at Hillside, some great additions to our school. Kimani s mother is Joanny and he has a brother Kenyon. Andrews, and Worcester Academy. Kimani s hero is Kobe Bryant the star L.A. Laker s guard. Kobe went right from high school to the NBA. However, young Kimani has a different plan than his idol. After high school his goal is to be an Kimani The first time I ever remember seeing Kimani Lawrence was at the annual Hillside Holiday basketball tournament here in Marlborough. He played for the Rhode Island Breakers. He was smooth out on the basketball court and was chosen as a 1 st team tournament all-star. Somebody from the crowd mentioned that he might be coming to Hillside. My immediate thought was that if we get this guy, we ll surely win another championship. Kimani Lawrence has not disappointed. He s been a force out on the basketball court, an Honor Roll student, and a great kid to have around Bulldog campus. When asked why he wanted to come to Hillside, Kimani explains that during the Hillside Holiday Tournament many people recommended the school to him. At that time Hillside had such notable players as Terance Mann, Austrian Robinson, Donovan Theme, and Chris Baldwin. But, he s not just a basketball player. He does very well as a student and loves geometry. Kimani is considering going to such notable secondary schools as South Kent, St. Providence, R.I. Kobe Bryant Laker s guard Orangeman at Syracuse then a professional sports broadcaster. Big dreams for a big kid. Why not? He s focused, intelligent, and knows where he wants to go in life. Well, maybe if all works out for Kimani Lawrence he ll be calling the Lakers games and interviewing his idol Kobe as an aging star guard. Hmm, maybe if Kimani keeps playing the way he is, instead of interviewing Kobe, he could be playing him someday. Page.10

Spotlight Student Profiles Dylan Breau Page.11 Dylan Dylan Breau comes to us from that icy winter land of Doug and Bob McKenzie s Great White North. That country that is above us on the map has cranked out such notable celebrities as Wayne Gretzky, Avril Lavigne, Keanu Reeves, Michael J. Fox, and Captain Kirk himself William Shatner. Canada is known for its friendly people, socialized medicine, maple syrup, and great hockey. It also happens to be the birthplace of Miss Howatt and Dylan Breau, and the country that I grew up in. Dylan s hometown is Fredericton, New Brunswick. Fredericton is the quaint capital of New Brunswick divided in half by the St. John River. It is an important cultural, artistic, and educational hub for the province. Although Fredericton is not that well known in these parts, it is certainly a city worth exploring and not all that far away. Famous sites include: Officers Square, Boyce Farmer s Market, the Lighthouse on the Green, and more. Dylan s mother Dawn and father Andrew visited us this summer and, after meeting with the ever popular Mr. K, decided to stay. He decided on Hillside because he thought it would be a great experience and he wanted a chance to develop as a student and a hockey player. It must ve taken a lot of courage and faith for the Breaus to send their son south of the border to our small boarding school in Massachusetts. And it s not the first time a young Canadian boy had to move to the U.S. and adjust to life here. There s another pretty famous guy who moved from the Maritimes to Pittsburgh Fredericton in the winter and did quite well. Sydney Crosby is Dylan s hero. The Pittsburgh Penguin s center also hails from the Maritimes, moved to America as a teenager, and is considered one of the greatest hockey players in the world. Like his idol Sid the Sydney Crosby kid, Dylan wants to be an NHL hockey player someday. Well, he s off to a great start. Let s just say that the mention of the words Hillside and hockey strikes fear into the hearts of opposing schools. But young Dylan is not just about hockey. He loves movies, drawing, and soccer. He is respected by all students and has a nice group of friends that includes Michael Sanderson and Nate Rentsch. He is also an above average student and wellliked by all faculty. Oh Canada, send us some more of these oat -standing student-athletes, ay! (*Disclaimer: reporter refuses responsibility for all corny lines)

Spotlight Student Profiles Chris Trudeau Page.12 Chris Pierre Trudeau used to be the Canadian Prime Minister back in the 1970s. He was known for his brashness and tell it like it is persona. He was the kind of man that could sell universal health care to the Canadian people and is credited with introducing Canada s Multicultural Policy. In other words, he was a prime Minister of great persuasive power, an intellect, and a strong leader. Well, if there s anything in a name, I have no doubt that young Chris Trudeau of San Jose, Costa Rica, possesses the same qualities. One can look at Chris, talk to him for 5 minutes, and get the sense that this guy is going to be fine in life; perhaps a salesman of some sort. Chris comes from a family of 4. His father is Francisco and he is the owner of his own construction company. His mother is Isabela who bears a physical resemblance to Chris and has visited Hillside on occasion. His older sister is Catalina and she is a student at Portsmouth Abbey. Chris has a close relationship with his family and whenever he talks about them it is obvious to see that he is a proud Trudeau. In fact, Chris role models are his father and grandfather. When asked why, the Maher House resident replies that they started off with nothing and became very successful. Ah, one of life s great lessons has not been lost on young Chris. It s a lesson that does not need to be preached; rather, it is one that need only be observed. Hard work and initiative pay off! Anybody can be given things in life, but the true mark of a person s character resides in what they earn on their own through hard work. San Jose, Costa Rica Chris hobbies include polo, soccer, and all kinds of water sports. Knowing Chris I would have to add pizza ordering and eating to this list. Chris is forever trying to get permission to get one of those Italian pies delivered to Maher House late night. Sometimes he succeeds and quite honestly I can t see any other student talking a dorm parent into that delivery other Pierre Trudeau former P.M. of Canada than Chris. His powers of speech and persuasiveness are truly a sight to behold. Although he doesn t know what he wants to be when he grows up, Mr. Worrall feels quite confident that he couldn t go wrong in sales. Well, not only is he a pretty good talker but he s a pretty darn good kid with a big heart and a generous spirit. Just like his namesake Pierre, the young Trudeau will surely be a success in life. Move over Pierre, the next great Trudeau is coming through.

Foods from Abroad From Argentina Sandwiches de miga are delicate sandwiches made with crustless buttered white bread, very thinly sliced cured meat, cheese, and lettuce. They are often purchased from entrepreneurial home cooks and consumed for a light evening meal. If you ever find yourself in this beautiful South American country, try the sandwiches de miga. They are a great appetizer. Sandwiches de miga From South Korea Bokkeum is a term to refer to a Korean dish made by stir-frying ingredients in a sauce. There is nothing better on a cold winter day then finding yourself hovering over a tasty piping hot plate of bokkeum. It is a delicious treat that will leave the eater constantly gravitating back to Korean food in the future. Put eating bokkeum on your bucket list! You won t regret it. Bokkeum From Costa Rica Casado is great for lunch. It consists of rice and beans served side by side instead of mixed. There will usually be some type of meat (carne asada, fish, pork chop, or chicken) and a salad to round out the dish. There may also be some extras like fried plantain (patacones or maduro), a slice of white cheese, and or corn tortillas in accompaniment. If you re ever visiting Chris Trudeau in Costa Rica, ask him if you can try the casado. From Canada Poutine is a fast food dish that originated in Quebec and can now be found across Canada. It is sold in small "greasy spoon" type diners (commonly known as "cantines" or "casse-croûtes" in Quebec) and pubs, as well as by roadside chip wagons (commonly known as "cabanes à patates", literally meaning "potato shacks").if you re ever in the Great White North treat yourself to a tasty plate of pipin hot poutine. 15 Unsolved Mysteries Dedicated to Unsolved Mysteries lover Sam natale Stigmata Stigmata are bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ, such as the hands and feet. The term originates from the line at the end of Saint Paul's Letter to the Galatians where he says, "I bear on my body the marks of Jesus." Stigmata is the plural of the Greek word στίγμα stigma, meaning a mark, tattoo or brand such as might have been used for identification of an animal or slave. An individual bearing stigmata is referred to as a stigmatic. Stigmata are primarily associated with the Roman Catholic faith. St. Francis of Assisi was the first recorded stigmatic in Christian history. For over fifty years Padre Pio of Pietrelcina of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin reported stigmata which were studied by several 20th century physicians. The observations were reportedly unexplainable and the wounds never became infected. A high percentage (perhaps over 80%) of all stigmatics are women. In his Stigmata: A Medieval Phenomenon in a Modern Age, Edward Harrison suggests that there is no single mechanism whereby the marks of stigmata are produced. This phenomenon remains an enduring modern mystery that is perplexing and perhaps miraculous. Marfa Lights The Marfa lights are unexplained lights (called ghost lights) that have been appearing on Mitchell Flat east of Marfa, Texas. The first published account of the lights was given in 1957, but Robert Reed Ellison (born 1880) reported them to his family and accounts of their appearances were spread by word of mouth. There are no verifiable written reports from before the 1950s.The lights are described as being the size of a basketball, floating in the air at around shoulder height. Colors are usually described as white, yellow, orange or red, but green and blue are sometimes reported. They usually travel laterally but have been seen to move rapidly in various directions. The lights sometimes appear in groups. Sightings are rare but there is a large amount of photographic and video evidence. Skeptics generally consider the lights to be related to traffic passing on the nearby US Route 67, or to be electric by-products of the predominantly quartz hills in the area. Because they usually appear in private property with terrain that is difficult to travel over, there are almost no reports of people being able to get close to the lights. Page.14
