This year s breakfast was once again an outstanding success, with over 275 Rotarians and guests attending a great venue, the RACV Club in Central Melbourne, to acknowledge and support the Rotary Foundation. Congratulations to all involved in this special event. The keynote speaker was the CEO of Our Community, Dr Rhonda Galbally AO, an eminent Australian noted and recognised for her outstanding work in the community. Rhonda spoke on finding ways of making a difference in our communities; on what part Rotary and our members can play in finding more effective ways of improving the social health of our communities. Rhonda went on to say that all good communities have service organisations such as Rotary. These organisations provide much more than basic physical and financial support they can often have a dramatic effect on, or change the behaviour, health and wellbeing of their community. Listening to Rhonda speak on the value of service organisations, made me think of what a great impact we have on our community, including our own local and world communities. When you think of how far we have come with the polio eradication program you can honestly say we have supported our world community in the best way possible. On the day when we recognise the Rotary Foundation, with the hosting of the Paul Harris Breakfast, we also recognise and thank those who have made significant financial contributions to our foundation. We also thank all those clubs and members who have committed to the Polio Plus Challenge to ensure we can eradicate polio from the world. You have done a great job. However, the news is not all good. The Year to Date Annual Program Giving for Australia s 22 Districts is a staggering 46% down on the previous year s figures. There may be many reasons for this huge drop in financial support. However we will certainly not have the resources to do what we want to do in three years time, unless we put in a big fundraising effort for the second half of this Rotary Year. Now is the time to sign up more Every Rotarian Every Year Centurion Members and perhaps a couple of Paul Harris Society Members from your club. Ask your Club President to prepare a cheque to handover at the conference next March. It s now over to you. I ask that each Rotarian consider what you can do to support the Foundation over the next few months and turn those horrible numbers around, because: The Future of OUR Districts Programs is in YOUR Hands. 2 NETWORKER Camp Getaway Progress External access to the new 28 bed dormitory at Camp Getaway (Rotary D9800) moved a step closer with another great working bee by the Rotary Club of Keilor to complete concrete access pathways two weekends ago. Despite very hot conditions, club members completed some very physical tasks, and even made a start of their newest project at the camp, a mini-golf course, suitable for people of all abilities. Members of the Essendon North Rotary Club were very busy at the camp last weekend. Dining tables were resurfaced, clothes lines installed, old chimneys removed, roof trusses prepared for the new kitchen project and paths re-formed, plus much more. Thanks to Alan Pettitt and his dedicated crew for their ongoing support of the project. Paul Kirkpatrick Chair Camp Getaway Rotary and UN Celebrate Close Relationship Speaking on a water panel, Nicholas Alipui, director of UNICEF programs, commended Rotary for its continued work with the agency toward improving the health of women and children around the world. ''It's no secret that Rotary's commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership on worldwide polio eradication encourages us all,'' said Alipui. ''It has been a hallmark of good practice of public and private partnership around the world.'' Alipui said progress has been made on the UN Millennium Development Goals, which aim to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, and illiteracy by But he added that more work needs to be done in the area of sanitation and hygiene. ''Proper sanitation is the bedrock for improving health and reducing child mortality,'' said Alipui. ''At Rotary, you have the strength of a large network of individuals who are able to draw upon many others to increase access to improved services.'' During a panel on literacy, Caryl M. Stern, president of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, noted that the adult illiteracy rate has decreased from 25 percent to 20 percent worldwide. She said that educating girls improves their prospects of being able to support themselves later in life and reduces the chance that their children will die before the age of five. ''Literacy saves lives,'' said Stern. ''Education is the only tool in our arsenal that can truly interrupt the cycle of poverty.'' 3 NETWORKER Urgent Message from VicRelief Foodbank Urgent help is required to pack Christmas Hampers at 4/2 Somerville Rd Yarraville VicRelief Foodbank need to pack approximately 5000 Christmas Hampers in time for distribution across Victoria. The Christmas hampers consist of staple foods such as pasta as well as some traditional Christmas foods such as ham, custard and Christmas cake. Every year we create thousands of Christmas hampers for families who would struggle to provide a Christmas meal. A few weeks ago the Government asked us to create a few thousand additional hampers specifically for drought affected families- with such short notice, finding the dozens of volunteers needed to help us has been challenging. We are in desperate need for volunteers (up to people per day, 9am- 4pm) on the following dates to help put together these hampers: 30 th November, 7 th 9 th 11 th 14 th 15 th and 16 th December For more information or to register interest you can contact our volunteer coordinator Laura Buchanan on or via her laurab@vrfb.com.au Rotary Maternal Health Project Receives Royal Recognition By Matthias Schütt - Rotary International News In appreciation for his work in improving maternal health care in northern Nigeria, PDG Robert Zinser was initiated into the inner circle of the Emir of Zazzau. Emir Shehu Idris awarded Zinser the traditional title of Eagle of Zazzau during a special ceremony 8 August 2008 at the Emir s palace in Zaria. Zinser is the project coordinator of a joint Nigerian-Austrian-German Rotary project to treat and prevent obstetric fistula, a painful birth injury that often results in a stillborn child and leaves the woman with chronic incontinence. "The treatment of fistula patients," says Zinser, "is a humanitarian commitment to help the weakest in Nigeria s society. But this can only be the first step. What we actually pursue is a comprehensive approach to raise awareness for medical care for women and rather prevent obstetric fistula." Reducing child mortality As vice chair of the Rotary Action Group for Population and Development, Zinser, a member of the Rotary Club of Ludwigshafen-Rheinschanze, has been involved in three projects in Nigeria since 1995, including conducting advocacy and awareness campaigns on child spacing and the risks of early marriage, training health personnel, and delivering quality equipment to hospitals, with the goal of reducing maternal and child mortality. In 2005 the current 1 million (US$1.46 million) project was started in the two states of Kano and Kaduna with a target population of 5 million women. The elements of this approach include radio serials, training of health personnel, delivery of medical equipment, and quality improvement of structure, process, and outcome. Zinser is now the only non-nigerian on the Emirate Council. During the turbanning ceremony, a white turban was placed on his head. Zinser thanked the Emir by handing over one of the 3,000 mosquito nets donated for distribution to families during recent polio vaccination efforts, one of several projects directed at reducing mother and child mortality in Nigeria. The support of Nigeria's Emirs, traditional religious leaders who work in close cooperation with the Nigerian administration, is critical to the continued success of Zinser's work. 4 NETWORKER Welcome New Members Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook - New Member Justine Cadell was inducted 18 Nov 09 A new member for Balwyn Rotary Club: David Rhodes. Two members were inducted to Williamstown Rotary Club: Jane Colquhoun who is a Finance Consultant and Nicole Manning who has the classification Banking Finance. Clubs can encourage new members to subscribe to The Networker, at Marketing Tips The 6 Laws Of Customer Experience Law #4: Unengaged Employees Don't Create Engaged Customers If you want to improve customer experience, then it might seem obvious that you should focus completely on customers. For most firms, though, that's not the correct approach. Where should you focus? On employees. While you can make some customers happy through brute force, you can not sustain great customer experience unless your employees are bought-in to what you're doing and are aligned with the effort. If employees have low morale, then getting them to "wow" customers will be nearly impossible. This relationship between employee engagement and customer experience was described very clearly in The Service-Profit Chain, which was published in the Harvard Business Review in 1994: Profit and growth are stimulated primarily by customer loyalty. Loyalty is a direct result of customer satisfaction. Satisfaction is largely influenced by the value of services provided to customers. Value is created by satisfied, loyal, and productive employees. Walt Disney also captured this concept very simply: You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality. Here are some implications of this law: Don't under-spend on training. Make it easy to do the right thing. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Find ways to celebrate. Measure employee engagement. THE BOTTOM LINE: CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE DEPENDS ON EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE. Rotary District 9800 Issue 22, 23rd November, 2009 Page 4
