1 June 13, 2011 This Little Piggy Went To Market Rebecca Schroeder President, Whiteshire Hamroc LLC Most people are three generations removed from knowing where their food comes from. So started the presentation from our speaker, Rebecca Schroeder, President of Whiteshire Hamroc LLC, which is located in Albion, Indiana. Rebecca gave us an in-depth look at the inner workings of a modern day swine farming operation and what a day in the life of a pig is like! Much of her presentation focused on their commitment to maintaining the health and welfare of the pigs being bred and raised on the farm. When it comes to controlling food rations, Rebecca stated that Pigs are like two year olds! Anything goes in their mouths! This is exactly the reason they keep all their stock indoors where they are in control of the environment! It was also very interesting to hear that not all of their pigs end up in a case at your local butcher! Whiteshire Hamroc Farms also raises pigs for the medical industry, as well as for breeding stock and many are exported overseas! Pork is now the leading meat product consumed worldwide (39%), ahead of poultry (31%), beef (25%) and sheep (5%). And remember, Don t be afraid of manure manure can be your friend!

3 Board to Vote on New Dues Structure for The Fort Wayne Rotary Executive Committee has presented a proposal for a revised and simplified dues structure to our Board of Directors for their review and approval. These changes would be become effective with the new fiscal year starting on July 1, Pending approval, these changes will be reflected in your next membership dues statement. The proposed dues structure would return the club to a single tier payment of $179 dues and $50 Fort Wayne Rotary Foundation contribution per semi-annual statement. The findings of the Executive Committee are: This structure will be simpler to administer for the secretary, treasurer, and cashiers. It is a much easier structure for all members to understand, remember and plan for. Last year, we tested the two tier dues structure and found it did not meet the realities of our new venue. Our contracts are substantially different now with Parkview Field than they were at the Holiday Inn. Both members and guests will pay the same amount at the door. It will encourage attendance which is something our club needs and Rotary International expects. It encourages recruitment of new members because the message is clear and consistent. It should help the Board and Executive Leadership of the club in future years to achieve stability in both dues and budgeting. When looking at the scope of our projects and expense to support them, we have a complex financial situation. This will be beneficial for the health of the club in the long run. 4 MeloDEEs and Memories Annual Dinner Yes, President Dee was as shocked as the rest of us to realize that her time as club leader is rapidly coming to a close! Though it seems like she has been at the podium for 100 years (if not longer) all good things must come to an end! Please join friends and family for a very special night to celebrate President Dee Hoffman with MeloDEEs and Memories! It will be a performance on a Major Scale! The Fort Wayne Women s Club will be the place to be on the evening of Tuesday, June 28 th! Reservations for this stellar event are due by Monday, June 13 th. For more details, check in with Janet Herman or Jane Wilks RYE Host Family Needed! The Rotary Youth Exchange committee is currently looking for housing for our inbound exchange student. This year, our club will be home to a young high school female from Mexico. She will be attending Leo High School. Our club needs to secure two or three host families in the Leo School District. Each host family would be home to our student for three to four months. The student will be arriving in August. Please contact Dan Carr or Doug Hiatt for more details. A Visit From an Old Friend

5 Speaking of Rotary Youth Exchange Students! We had a RYE alumni join us for lunch last Monday! Kathi Hahn, our exchange student from Germany is on a whirlwind three week trip across the United States. It was wonderful to welcome Kathi back to Fort Wayne and our club. Kathi plans to pursue a medical career starting with college this fall. The Tradition Continues! And what a truly amazing family tradition this is! Please congratulate our newest and possibly youngest Paul Harris Fellow, Sabrina McKay! This is a tradition that has now spanned four generations in the McKay family! Kenneth McKay, a Paul Harris Fellow and Club President, made his son Terry an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow in the early 1960 s. Terry McKay, who went on to become a

6 Rotary member, Club President and District Governor, made his son Michael an Honorary Paul Harris in the early 1980 s. We all know that Mike went on to become a Rotary member and Club President. Mike has now made his daughter Sabrina an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow at the ripe old age of three! Well, from here, the rest will be up to history! Sabrina could be an Early Act member in just a few short years! Mike and Amanda are hoping that it is a while, or actually, quite a while, before she is carrying on this tradition to the 5 th generation of McKays! Technical Problems Cause Delays! Yes, even in the high-tech world of Rotary e-newsletters and the like. Little bugs arise to befuddle you! There are two stories that will be delayed due to technical issues. Hopefully we will have stories forthcoming highlighting Sandy Schumaker and the Washington School Early Act project day and the Rotaract Club s 2 nd Anniversary. Apologies! And This Parting Picture!
