In 2011, the Alumni Association eliminated its membership, dues-paying structure and is now open to all alumni. The Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Association operates as a separate 501c3 and continues to be a membership-based organization with a dues structure. The goal of the Alumni Association is to build pride and engage with all 245,000 Wayne State University alumni through various communication strategies and engagement activities. Communication The alumni electronic State, is sent to approximately 68,000 alumni monthly and the Office of Alumni Relations is working to increase circulation. The alumni association also s the monthly electronic newsletter Let s Go. The School of Medicine Alumni Connection monthly electronic newsletter is sent to more than 5,000 alumni monthly. Wayne State magazine was mailed to approximately 13,000 alumni and friends in July. The issue featured architecture on campus, the university s outdoor art collection, and a profile of President Allan Gilmour. The fall issue, scheduled for publication in late September, will introduce President M. Roy Wilson and focus on veterans.

4 Wayne State magazine recently received an Award of Excellence from APEX (Awards for Publication Excellence), a national competition. The magazine won in the Custom-Published Magazines and Journals category. Other winners in that category included Ford Motor Company and Time Inc. The alumni association s Facebook page had 29 posts for the month of July and continues to reach and engage alumni. Some of the posts had more than 1,000 views. The alumni LinkedIn page topped 3,000 members and was used to promote the launch of the Creating Connections Career Series. Engagement activities The School of Medicine Alumni Association hosted the annual seminar Preparing Your Residency Application and Personal Statement, led by Dr. Diane Levine, on July 10. The alumni association hosted a garden party for young alumni on July 12. Approximately 45 alumni from the graduation years 1969 through 2013 attended. The event captured the interest of several alumni who have joined the association s planning and volunteer initiatives. The School of Business Administration Alumni Association hosted the seventh annual Swing for the Students golf outing at the Detroit Golf Club on July 22. More than $350,000 has been raised through this event over the past six years. Proceeds benefit Detroit high school graduates who attend the School of Business Administration. The Organization of Black Alumni (OBA), chartered by the Wayne State University Alumni Association, held its annual Black Alumni Weekend event July in conjunction with the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University and Western Michigan University. The weekend included an Evening of Elegance, at which Dr. Phyllis Vroom was the Wayne State University honoree, a Belle Isle Park event and Sunday brunch. The School of Medicine Alumni Association hosted an Alumni Legacy Luncheon following the school s White Coat Ceremony on August 2. Regional alumni engagement activities included a Toledo Mud Hens game in Toledo, Ohio, on August 3; a gathering at the Chateau Chantal Winery in Traverse City on August 18; and a gathering at The University Club in Washington, D.C., on September 9.

5 The School of Medicine Alumni Affairs and the Admissions Office teamed up to present the 2013 Med Ed Prep on August 16. The alumni association hosted a picnic-style welcome reception for incoming students on September 10. Students were treated to grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, lawn games, prize drawings and a resource display. Resources featured included three alumni association student scholarships, Generation Wayne student newsletter, Let s Go, a Creating Connections Career Series brochure, and the latest alumni magazine. Student survey results gathered at the event provided insight on best ways to maintain student interest and participation in the alumni association. The alumni association launched the Creating Connections Career Series on September 17 with a time management seminar for students, alumni and staff. Presenters included student leaders Kelly Schneider, Dayna Walker and Jaison George. School of Medicine Alumni Affairs hosted a student seminar on Making the Most of Your Residency Interview on September 17. Upcoming engagement activities September 22: Alumni in southern California are invited to attend a Padres game in San Diego, California. September 24: Los Angeles area alumni are invited to an event at the Long Beach Art Museum. September 27: The alumni association will host a Golden Jubilee 50th Anniversary Reunion. October 1: The alumni association will host the Creating Connections Career Series. The seminar is Connect with Your Dream: Do you want a job or career? Students, alumni and staff are invited to register for the event. October 2: An event to introduce President M. Roy Wilson will be held at the Franklin Hills Country Club. Entrance by invitation.

6 October 3: The alumni association will host an event for Chicago area alumni at the Chicago Club. October 5: An alumni awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with Homecoming. October 8: The School of Medicine will hold Big D Career Night. October 15: The alumni association will host a travel preview at the Oakland Center. October 16: An event to introduce President M. Roy Wilson will be held at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Entrance by invitation. October 22: The alumni association will host the Creating Connections Career Series. The seminar is Job Search Prep. Students, alumni and staff are invited to register for the event. October 30: An event to introduce President M. Roy Wilson will be held at the Oakland Hills Country Club. Entrance by invitation. November 9: The alumni association will host a veterans football tailgate event. November 13: The alumni association will host a networking event for May 2013 graduates. November 19: The alumni association will host a Hang Out at the House event for students. November 24: An event for Phoenix area alumni will be held at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, Arizona.
