PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Gordon Greenwood Families, At Gordon Greenwood student s safety is the utmost importance to our staff. This is a reminder that the front of the school is a Drop Off /Pick Up area only and that there is no parking or idling along the curb. We are asking parents to monitor this safety precaution on their own. We also have staff on supervision duty starting at 8:20 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. Also please be aware that we need to enter and exit at the appropriate designations. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this matter. Pro-D Day (October 23 rd all day) and Collaboration Session is on Monday, Oct 26th dismissal at 1:15 p.m. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. The staff at Gordon Greenwood are a highly energetic, collaborative, and dedicated group of professionals. They are always looking for ways to improve instruction and encourage learning in the school. Sometimes this means reflecting on the teaching practice for an entire class or unit and at other times, it s how we adjust or adapt teaching and support to help individual students. Given the wide range of student abilities and attitudes, and the social complexities of the classroom, teachers are always looking to improve opportunities for children. On the Professional Development Day, teachers province wide, will be attending sessions to learn new ideas and strategies to use in their classrooms. Students do not attend school on Friday, October 23 rd. On the collaboration session on Monday, October 26 th, students will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. Lunch time on Monday is at 11:30 a.m. Our collaborative staff members will be working on reviewing the new curriculum that is scheduled to be implemented in September of B.C. s new curriculum is being redesigned to respond to the demanding world our students are entering. In developing new curriculum, the Ministry consulted with experts in the field. They suggested that to prepare students for the future, the curriculum must be learner-centered and flexible and maintain a focus on literacy and numeracy, while supporting deeper learning through concept-based and competency driven approaches.

2 Interim Reports and Conferences Interim Reports will be issued next Thursday, October 29th. Each student will bring home a report that gives parents an idea of how their child is managing while getting back into the routines of school life. It will focus more on the student s work habits and behaviour, than the academic subjects. If you do not receive a report, please contact your child s teacher. As well, register for conference times on line to discuss your child s progress, questions or concerns. Parent teacher interviews have been set aside for Wednesday, November 4 th from 2-4:30 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. and on Thursday, November 5 h, beginning at 2:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. If you wish to meet with your child s teacher, please do so by registering on line. If you are unable to meet on this day, contact the teacher directly to make alternate arrangements. Also, please ensure that the interim report is signed and returned to the classroom teacher as quickly as possible. Parents go to where they can view the time slots. Parents then click on the register tab and fill in the registration form to create an account. Once parents have successfully registered, they log into the system using their new user id and password. They must register each of their children with the add a student button. Please note you cannot access this site to register until Thursday, October 29 th at 2:30 pm and the site will close on Monday, November 2 nd at 11 p.m.

3 School Hours The office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. These are the hours that Ms. May will be available in the office. Students begin the day at 8:36 a.m. and unless arrangements have been made to work with a teacher, students should not be arriving prior to 8:15 a.m. (this is when we begin to supervise on the playground). Moreover, after school supervision continues until 2:45 p.m., after which students are expected to have left the property (unless they have made arrangements with a teacher or are being supervised by a parent). We do have a voice mail system in place which gets checked throughout the day. Please feel free to use this service to leave messages regarding student absence. Also, we ask that parents make every effort to support having our students arrive in time to start the school day. One of the best habits that we can teach our children is to be on time. FRIENDLY REMINDER Parents please remember to send lunch with your child in the morning so they have it to eat right away at lunch time. Also, please remember to call in if your student is going to be absent. HOT LUNCH! Hot Lunch ordering opens on November 9 th to 16 th. The hot lunch dates that are included for this time period will include: November 26 th December 4 th December 15 th January 8 th January 12 th SMILE Photo Re-Take Day is October 29 th Photo re-take day is scheduled for October 29 th. If your child missed photo day or you want a retake this will be the day. If you want a re-take, please send photos back with your child to give to the photographer on this day. Grade 7 Grad Fundraising An account has been set up with the Walnut Grove Bottle Depot, located at th Avenue. When you donate your bottles, tell the cashier that you would like to donate your refund to the Gordon Greenwood Elementary Grade 7 Class of All donations will go towards the Grade 7 Grad Fundraising. 4 Election 2015 Mrs. Thom s student Polling Station "On Friday October 17 Division 5 held a student vote for all intermediate classes to participate in. In anticipation of the federal election, all intermediate students have been working on the student vote program for the past few weeks, learning about the different political parties and the voting system. Our class was excited to set up and run the school election and each had a role to play. Thank you to all the classes who participated!" As of mid-day on October 19 th more than 850,000 votes were reported from over 6000 schools, representing 337 federal ridings. The Liberals won a majority government with 223 seats and the Conservatives formed the official opposition with 69 seats. The NDP won 40 seats, and the Greens won 4. The Bloc Quebecois won 1 seat in Quebec. 6 Gordon Greenwood Elementary Grade 7 Bottle The Grade 7 Outdoor Education Program is conducting an on-going bottle drive at the Walnut Grove Bottle Depot located at Avenue, Langley. Please donate your bottles, cans, juice boxes, drink pouches, etc. to help us raise money toward our endof-year activities. It is so easy to do! Simply take your returnables to the Walnut Grove Bottle Depot, tell the folks there you are donating your bottles to: Gordon Greenwood Elementary Grade 7 Class of 2016 They will add your donation to our account. 7 COMMUNITY NEWS Walnut Grove Community Centre s Youth Program runs every Friday from 7-10pm and Saturday from 7-9pm. The events are free to attend for ages 12-18, and range from playing ping pong to scavenger hunts, minute to win it games, movies & popcorn, karaoke and so much more. Come out and have fun with your friends!
