7 UCAS Applications We have started the application process Most students have set up their UCAS account Students have been given a complete guide to completing the UCAS application The hardest and most time consuming part is the personal statement They have been given handouts on how to write a good PS and most have submitted an outline

8 Student Finance Tuition Loans 9,250 per year Paid directly to the university Tuition Fee Loan Maintenance Loan Maintenance Loan paid to the student. Means tested Bursaries/Scholarships Bursaries and scholarships available through universities and other Schemes do not need to be repaid

9 Student Finance Students will be supported to apply for student finance 2 elements: Tuition Loans 9,250 per year (Sept 2017) Paid directly to the university and no money needs to be paid up front

10 Student Finance Maintenance Loan Means tested, the amount received depends upon income Also whether they live at home or away Higher amounts received if they study in London NB Nothing needs to be repaid until the person has left university and is earning more than 21,000 per year. They will repay 9% of any income over the 21,000 threshold. NB: figures correct September 2017

11 How to apply They will apply through Student Finance England The portal usually opens in February/early March They will have support to complete their applications Once they have completed their sections Parents will receive an asking them if they support the application you will need to set up an account and then provide financial information

12 Bursaries and Scholarships These do not need to be repaid They are available from universities and other organisations They have different eligibility criteria Some based on achievement and some on economic situation

13 GAP YEAR Students should use their time wisely There are a lot of exciting opportunities open to gap year students. Paid work Voluntary work in the UK or overseas Travelling International projects Best to apply and defer their place until the following September

14 High Aspirations If students have the ability to apply for more prestigious universities or courses then they should Many of the most prestigious are those represented by the Russell Group. Outstanding teaching, research and facilities Graduates generally get higher paying jobs. One in three students receive bursaries or scholarships to help with their studies. It is important to note that not all of the top-ranked UK universities are in the group, Support provided to help them apply

15 Super curricular activities To help them maximise success Summer Schools Master Classes They should started apply early in the Spring Term of Year 13 There will be many more activities for your children as we are working with different partner organisations this year. Volunteering Opportunities eg St John Ambulance

16 Our partners AimHigher Plus: Some embedded activities for students from specific post codes (mentoring trips) Some wraparound activities for all students Bradford University Trips and in school activities Sutton Trust/HEAN Careers and personal statement online support And workshops

17 Apprenticeships Traineeship: prepares those with less skills eg Maths and English to start an intermediate apprenticeship Intermediate apprenticeship is usually a Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) and you will be required to complete Maths and English functional skills Advanced apprenticeship is Level 3 (equivalent to A levels) Higher or Degree level apprenticeships will provide full professional qualifications and usually includes a degree as part of your training

18 Applying for an apprenticeship Through the government apprenticeship web site Through adverts from different companies or recruitment web sites such as Indeed Students may need a CV and covering letter

19 SUCCESSFUL FUTURES % of students applying to university gained a place 87.2% of students gained a place at their first choice university 74% of all students in the sixth form progressed to university last year 100% of students went on to full time education or employment

20 Successful Futures % applied this year 92% gained places at their first choice university 14 had unconditional offers and 3 have gained places at Russell Group universities 1 has a place on a tennis scholarship in America Students also applied for apprenticeships in banking; digital marketing; business and finance
