3 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The Notre Dame de Sion School in Kansas City is an independent Roman Catholic school providing the highest quality college preparatory education from preschool through grade 12. Sion continues the tradition of the founding sisters, the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion, inviting students to encounter God in a Catholic atmosphere that respects all faith traditions. The school partners with families and the community to prepare students for socially responsible, value based leadership in a culturally and religiously diverse world. Background Statement The Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion started Notre Dame de Sion School in Kansas City in The order was founded in France in 1843 by Father Theodore Ratisbonne who was raised in a Jewish home before becoming a Christian and eventually a priest. At the core of the school is the charism of the Sisters, which reflects a threefold commitment: to the church, to the Jewish people, and to creating a world of peace, justice, and love. The school is one of 19 Sion schools worldwide. Notre Dame de Sion School in Kansas City graduated is first class of students in The school is in two locations. The Grade School, serving boys and girls of preschool age through grade eight, is located in Historic Hyde Park. The High School, a college preparatory school serving young women in grades nine through twelve, is located in suburban Kansas City at 106th and Wornall Road. At our grade school campus, the goal for our students is to share their individual fires of learning with others and to become responsible citizens of a larger world. Students engage in coursework that is aligned with the mission of the school, developing spiritually with a strong character to become leaders for social justice. At our high school campus, students are challenged with a vigorous and enriching curriculum. The opportunities for an accelerated academic experience through college credit and advanced placement courses are continually evident in Sion students 49 consecutive years as National Merit Scholars, Finalists, Semi-Finalists and Commended Scholars. The hallmark of a Sion education is the delivery of a challenging, college preparatory curriculum by educators who encourage their students to become discerning consumers of information who, armed with keen intellect, will act as stewards to the complex world around them. Notre Dame de Sion Schools of Kansas City aim to respond to the world in which we live. The universality of our mission calls us to be a positive force in the world. The total academic experience at Sion is a special one. Our founders believed that the responsible application and conveyance of knowledge outside of the school was of equal importance to the acquisition of that knowledge. One-hundred years after its foundation, Notre Dame de Sion School of Kansas City lives and heralds that message every day, and that is the Sion difference. 3

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement Message from Sion's Head of School: The Notre Dame de Sion Schools of Kansas City enter into the school year celebrating 106 years of educational excellence represented in two schools deeply rooted in the Mission of Sion. From our personalized coeducational academic programs at the Grade School, to the inclusive and progressive nature of our all-girls High School, Sion schools uniquely welcome students of all backgrounds to thrive as a Sionian. Together with our outstanding faculty, we seek to teach Sion students the skills necessary to develop strong character, collaborate with each other and the community, expand critical thinking skills, enhance creativity, and go on to thrive in an ever changing world. Sion s faculty believe that whether in second grade religion class or Advanced Placement Chemsistry, our students have a responsibility to use the knowledge they gain here to leave the world better than they found it, and to use the passions they gain at Sion to ignite the passions of those around them. Sion maintains its rich history and tradition as a safe space for learning, giving each student the opportunity to develop and be at their best. Our founder believed that somewhere in the world, there must be a school, some sort of sanctuary where the mysteries of the present and the future could be revealed.
