1 Birmingham City University Faculty of Arts, Design and Media Job Description Post: Ref No: Salary: Contract Reporting to Attractive Remuneration Package Management Executive Dean of Faculty Purpose of the post To provide leadership, strategic and operational management for the Faculty in relation to the agreed focus areas in the context of the University's Strategic Plan and so support the Executive Dean in achieving the Faculty's agreed objectives. General Responsibilities as an : 1. Make a valuable contribution to the leadership and management of the Faculty and help ensure that the Faculty Management Team create a supportive, vibrant and engaging achievement-oriented culture which facilitates timely and effective change. 2. Work with the Executive Dean and other senior managers in the Faculty to agree a strategic direction that is in line with the University's Strategic Plan and create and revise the Faculty Development Plan to include the setting of achievement targets. 3. Work with the Executive Dean and other senior managers to monitor performance against targets and work with them to address under-performance against those targets. 4. Develop and sustain close relationships on behalf of the Faculty and the University with relevant employers, external agencies, key stakeholders and other providers and act as an effective ambassador for the University in a range of external settings ensuring that, at all times, the University is portrayed positively and that its reputation is enhanced. 5. Ensure effective two way communication throughout the Faculty in relation to relevant University and Faculty strategies, policies, procedures and projects ensuring staff, students and other stakeholders are consulted, listened to and well-informed. 6. Lead specific initiatives and projects within the Faculty as agreed with the Executive Dean and contribute to the strategic and operational development of the University through undertaking cross-university projects and initiatives identified by the VCO or the Executive Dean.

2 7. Represent the Faculty at relevant University Committees and meetings and take an active role in Faculty Committees and groups including chairing as appropriate. 8. Plan, monitor and manage any devolved budgets effectively. 9. Work closely with other senior managers in the Faculty to provide leadership, effective management and development for all staff including identifying opportunities for staff to be involved in cross-university and external projects, events and working groups. 10. Provide leadership and line management to specific staff as defined by the role and any other staff as agreed with the Executive Dean including the setting of objectives, performance management and review. 11. Liaise, co-operate, collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues both within the Faculty and the wider University including central and professional service functions to share good practice, innovate and improve performance to create a culture of continuous quality enhancement within the Faculty. 12. Provide academic leadership, ensuring high academic standards are achieved, and contribute to teaching, research, professional practice and/or third stream activity as appropriate. 13. Contribute to the recruitment and selection of staff within the Faculty and, as appropriate, elsewhere in the University. 14. Lead as appropriate on the implementation of University and Faculty policies, strategic decisions and compliance requirements including those related to quality review, audit recommendations, equality issues and health & safety. 15. Any other duties as appropriate to the role and agreed with the Executive Dean including deputising for the Executive Dean as required. Specific Responsibilities in relation to the Student Learning Experience: 1. Lead and manage across the Faculty and with collaborative partners implementation of the University's Student Learning Experience Strategy. 2. Provide leadership, development and support across the Faculty and with collaborative partners on aspects related to student success including retention, progression, achievement, employability, student satisfaction and student engagement. 3. Chair the Faculty Student Experience, Learning and Teaching Committee. 4. Ensure performance against student success targets including retention, progression, achievement, employment and student satisfaction (including aspects of equality and diversity) is monitored and work with the Executive Dean and other senior managers to address under-performance against targets. 5. Lead for the Faculty on the Partners for Success project, working closely with senior managers within and beyond the Faculty who hold responsibility for aspects of the project.

Lead for the Faculty on student surveys including the NSS, PTES and internal University module and programme surveys, supporting other senior managers in identifying and following through on necessary actions. 7. Lead the development and embedding of high quality learning and teaching practice across the Faculty including the development and embedding of technology enhanced learning, working with CELT to provide pedagogic professional development and to support staff in achieving HEA accreditation. 8. Work with Heads of School to ensure that the quality of teaching in the Faculty is monitored and reviewed, that good practice is shared and unsatisfactory performance addressed 9. Be responsible for overseeing the wider student experience in all aspects of student life and support (including support for disability) liaising as needed with University professional services and the Students' Union. Specific Responsibilities in relation to Academic Quality: 1. Provide leadership, development and support across the Faculty and with collaborative partners on all academic quality assurance and enhancement issues including programme approval and review, external examiners, annual monitoring and external review such as QAA and PSRBs. 2. Work with Academic Registry and CELT to create a culture of continuous quality enhancement within the Faculty and collaborative partners and ensure that University quality enhancement initiatives are delivered. 3. Act as the senior manager for the Faculty for student disciplinary issues and fitness for practice ensuring that University policies and procedures are enacted in a fair and timely manner. 4. Work with the Students' Union and with Heads of School to ensure high quality, effective and widespread student representation on Faculty committees and groups. 5. Work with other s with responsibility for Academic Quality and members of central and professional service teams to share good practice, innovate and improve performance. Specific Responsibilities in relation to Research: 1. Chair the Faculty Research Committee and Faculty Research Degrees Committee. 2. Be responsible for faculty PGR student recruitment, induction, progression and completion. 3. Be responsible for faculty research income targets. 4. Champion a vibrant research/supervisory/professorial community within the faculty.

4 5. Work with Heads of School to devise and deliver faculty work allocations to support/extend Research activity. 6. Contribute strategic leadership in Research to the wider university via the University Research Committee. 7. Be extensively externally networked facilitating new research contracts and awards. 8. Advise and support faculty UoA leaders in recruitment and induction of new researchers. 9. Support and develop International research links, joint centres and collaborative partnerships. Specific Responsibilities in relation to Enterprise: 1. Be responsible for faculty enterprise income targets. 2. Oversee within faculty all business generation, CRM and contract closure. 3. Support the introduction and maintenance of University enterprise Institutes. 4. Work with Heads of School to devise and deliver faculty work allocations to support/extend Enterprise activity. 5. Develop a strong external profile facilitating knowledge transfer and inward investment. 6. Drive the faculty's strategy to support students and graduates into employment and the take up of entrepreneurship and student business start ups, to include monitoring and achievement of employment targets. 7. Take a lead role in the development of employer partnerships and faculty industry/business boards to include the delivery of project/internship/placement opportunities. Specific Responsibilities in relation to International: 1. Lead and manage the development of the Internationalisation Strategy across the Faculty, in line with the wider University strategy and that strategy within the Faculty. 2. Play a University-wide role, working with the PVC APMD and International Office and its dedicated International Partnership Unit on international market development and aspects that will develop and enhance Birmingham City University as a University for Birmingham with a global reach, and engaging with, and influencing, national and international stakeholders.

Lead and manage the Faculty international collaborative partners on aspects related to international student recruitment, partner relationship management, international programs, student mobility and an internationally focused curriculum. 4. Work closely with Marketing and Communication on the development of the University global profile and expansion of its international alumni relations. 5. Create a welcoming and stimulating international and multicultural academic and social environment in the Faculty for incoming staff and students from overseas, and for international visitors. 6. Promote an understanding and appreciation amongst the Faculty and its students of the opportunities and value of internationalisation. 7. Support appropriate intercultural and linguistic training and awareness opportunities. Specific Responsibilities in relation to Academic Development: 1. Lead the development and implementation of the Faculty academic portfolio and (home EU) marketing and communication strategy in line with University ambitions to grow student income and extend and develop the Faculty academic offer including cross faculty working. 2. Play a University-wide role, working with the relevant Executive Dean and PVC on the development of University s size and academic portfolio shape and form including the Faculty s on line offer. 3. Lead and manage student recruitment, outreach and partner activity that enhances the future (home EU) student market and lead the preparation for approval for new academic portfolio development. 4. Lead the Faculty on widening participation and have responsibility for the Faculty schools and colleges partnerships strategy development. 5. Promote curriculum and educational innovation across and beyond the Faculty and the sharing of best professional practice. 6. Work with Heads of School to ensure all programmes are innovative; efficient; meet student needs (including needs of students with disabilities), meet employer needs; improve employability and employment outcomes; and are fit for purpose. 7. Lead the faculty on working with Marketing and Communication on the development of the Faculty/University national profile and expansion of its alumni relations. 8. Promote and represent the Faculty with external stakeholders.

6 Person Specification: Academic Quality and Student Learning Experience Essential Desirable Educational Qualifications: First degree and a postgraduate and/or professional qualification in a relevant area. Fellowship of the HEA and/or teaching qualification/exemption from Birmingham City University s PG Cert based on experience. Principal or Senior Fellowship of the HEA. Professorial status or eligibility to be awarded professorial status upon appointment. A higher degree, PhD or professional doctorate in a relevant academic area. Experience: Significant and successful experience of designing and managing new HE programmes in an area of the Faculty s academic portfolio; experience of devising and implementing marketing and pedagogic initiatives in an HE context Track record of working with high-level industry partners for HE provision Special Knowledge: Research-driven knowledge of at least one area of the Faculty s academic portfolio; understanding of new course opportunities; knowledge of QA processes and parameters. Skills and abilities: Strategic focus with strong leadership and management skills including excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills, strong interpersonal and facilitatory skills. The ability to work collaboratively in a team, to lead and to inspire high quality performance in others. Highly motivated with ability to determine and achieve own targets and objectives. Ability to build effective relationships and interact with students, colleagues, external clients, stakeholders and fellow professionals and to work collaboratively. Experience and/or ability to plan, manage and implement change in an academic

7 environment while maintaining the confidence of staff at all levels. Good organisational skills, negotiation skills, IT literate. Personal qualities: Able to visualise how the Faculty could and should be developed to attain academic excellence in local, national and international markets. Has the confidence and courage to take on challenges and to be accountable for any decisions/risks taken. High level of professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment. Well networked within the Higher Education/relevant professional sector. A genuine commitment to equal opportunities and widening participation.
