1 THE CRUSADER KALEIDOSCOPE Volume 9, No. 2 April 2017 Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31 Crusaders Represent in Scholastic Competition The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a prestigious contest for high school artists and writers all over the country. Students submit individual works and portfolios for judging and awards at regional levels and then Gold Key winners move on to the national level for even greater recognition and the chance for scholarship offers. Works can be awarded at three different levels; Honorable Mention, Silver Key, and the highest, Gold Key. This year LHNW had three students enter the competition; Colin Jones, Kristen Sadlocha, and Jenna Wilusz. With over 6,000 individual entries and nearly 300 portfolio entries, competition in Oakland County is fierce! Colin and Jenna both were fortunate to receive multiple honors for their work this year. They also were the first two LHNW students ever to submit a portfolio to competition. Colin submitted a photography portfolio and Jenna a drawing portfolio. Amazingly, BOTH received Gold Keys for their portfolios! Jenna also received special recognition, having her portfolio named one of eight Best of Show portfolios - a tremendous honor! She was one of only eight students in our area to have their actual portfolio works on exhibit at the regional exhibit at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit during the month of February. In the individual works categories, Colin submitted five photographs and received an Honorable Mention and a Silver Key for his work. Jenna submitted six drawings and was honored with two Honorable Mentions, one Silver Key, and three Gold Keys! One of her drawings was also awarded as an American Vision Nominee, which means it was judged as the best drawing in the show, and moved on to further judging at the national level, another first for an LHNW student! Colin and Jenna s work was on display during the month of February at the College for Creative Studies in the Regional Scholastic Awards Exhibit. They also got to take part in a special recognition ceremony at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Once again, our LHNW artists represented us very well, and show that you don t have to be at a big school to do big-time work. Congratulations! 2 ART OPPORTUNITIES DEPARTMENT NEWS Crusaders Recognized in MAEA Competition Art Alumni Update Each year the Michigan Art Education Association hosts an art competition at both the local and state levels. Each school is able to submit only five works from five different assignments. These works are judged at a regional (county) level and then the winners of each region is sent on to Lansing for judging at the state level. This year LHNW was represented by five Seniors: Caleb Nelson, Hannah Sauer, Faith Craig, Kristen Sadlocha, and Jenna Wilusz. After the initial round of judging only 30 works were selected from our county and LHNW was blessed to have three of our students move on to the state level of adjudication. Congratulations Joel Grothaus to (class Faith of Craig, 06) Kristen Sadlocha, and Jenna Wilusz for achieving this honor! At the state level, Jenna Wilusz had her work selected as one of the Top 100 works in the state; the third straight year she has achieved this honor!

I encourage our art students to enter their work and create work for contests outside of school. Listed above are some of the many opportunities that have come to my attention. New ones will be added as I become aware of them. I feel it is important as an artist to put your work out for others to see and judge. For students who may be considering a career in art, having these experiences on one s resume can be important. I encourage our aspiring artists to take a look at some back issues of this newsletter over the summer and start working on some ideas for the contests that come up every year. Who knows, you may be able to win some recognition, money, or scholarships! Seniors Raking in Art Scholarship Offers! This year s Senior class is setting all kinds of records as far as bringing in art scholarship money. To date, five of our art students have reported $586,000 in art scholarship offers! This blows away any other class we ve had at LHNW, and there is still more time for more offers. Congratulations to Jenna Wilusz, Caleb Nelson, Colin Jones, Austin Daniel, and Kristen Sadlocha!

4 ARTSONIA / MORE ART NEWS Page 4 10th Annual Empty Bowls Dinner March 29th Each year the Ceramics classes of LHNW host an Empty Bowls dinner to raise money for the MCREST program at St. John Fraser. MCREST provides food, clothing, transportation and a place of shelter to those who are in need in our area. This year will be our 10th time hosting this event in support of the homeless. For this event our Ceramics students create bowls that will be available at the dinner. We also make all the soups, desserts and salads for the dinner and cook and serve everything on site. People are welcome to come to the dinner and buy a bowl. Both are by free-will offering. All the money collected from the dinner and the sale of bowls is given to the MCREST program at St. John. With a successful dinner this year, we may break the $10,000 mark for money raised through this event. How can you help? First of all come to the dinner! This year s dinner is at St. John Fraser on March 29th. Dinner is served from 5-7 pm and St. John s Lenten service follows from 7-8pm. We can always use people to bake desserts and cook soups for our supper, so it that interests you, contact Mr. Davis. We also will accept monetary donations towards food and supplies, or simply to support MCREST. Again, our goal is to raise as much money as we can to help those who are in need. We invite everyone to come and support this worthy cause! Hope to see you there! Students have this form in their syllabus. Additional forms are also available from Mr. Davis. Students who already have a permission form on file from previous years do not need to submit a new one. Artsonia is a great resource in that is allows parents (and anyone else) to see what students are creating. It also allows for students to have a chance to enter contests and win prizes, money and supplies. Furthermore, their work can be put on products and the purchase of these products gives money back to the LHNW Art Department. Join the growing legion of NW students whose work is being viewed worldwide on Artsonia!

Thanks to Jenna Wilusz, Olivia Rice, Jewel Wesp, Hannah Sauer, Kristen Sadlocha, Jake Gunn, Austin Daniel, Caleb Nelson, Faith Craig, Natalie Nalezyty, and Jill Katner for using their artistic gifts to bless someone from all the way across the world!
