3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Fleming-Neon Middle School serves the communities of southeastern Letcher County near the eastern Kentucky-Virginia border. Reflecting the communities it serves, the student body is made up of 199 sixth through eighth grade students, of whom 99.8% are white. 69% of students participate in the free/reduced lunch program, which also echoes the socio-economic state of its community. These students are taught by a staff of 9 full time classroom teachers, which are supported by several instructional aides & itinerant teachers in the areas of arts & humanities. In addition the school has an Intervention Specialist that is funded by Gear Up as well a Change Coordinator to provide Physical Education & Practical Living skills to the students. The school also has 2 full time special education teachers, which attends to the 18% of the student body that qualifies for services. In recent years, the decline in the coal industry of the area has impacted the school & community is many ways, but none as detrimental of the exodus of families to obtain work in other areas of the state and country. The actual creation of FNMS four years ago was the result of a dwindling population that dictated Fleming-Neon Elementary and Martha Jane Potter Elementary schools combine to more effectively serve the children of the community. Despite the adversity the school & surrounding area has encountered, Fleming-Neon Middle School has managed to thrive. It's greatest achievement to date in its short existence is its designation as a "School of Distinction", based on its performance on the Spring 2014 K- PREP assessment. With an overall score of 73.5, FNMS place in the 95th percentile of all Kentucky schools. It also received the honor of being designated as a Distinguished school based on the Spring 2015 K-PREP assessment. Page 2

FNMS is dedicated to the intellectual, social, physical, emotional, and psychological development of all students. Success is dependent on the student, family, community, and school personnel working collectively to remove barriers and enhance student growth. This dedication is reflected in our mission statement, "OUR students are successful based on what WE do!" One way the school provides for success for all students is daily time dedicated to RTI (Response to Intervention), where student data is used to provide students with specialized instruction one class period each day. Student goals are reviewed every grading period to monitor student progress in the area of concern and to establish new goals. Page 3

6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. FNMS has been very successful the last 3 years. 3 years ago we were the first school in the Letcher County School District to be labeled as a Proficient School, the following year we broke through and achieved the honor of being labeled a "School of Distinction", last year we were still very successful and was labeled a Distinguished school. FNMS's most notable achievement since its establishment in 2012 is its recognition of being a "School of Distinction" based on its students' performance on the Spring 2014 KPREP. FNMS achieved an overall score of 73.5, placing in in the 95th percentile when compare to all Kentucky schools. We are hoping to maintain our Distinguished ranking and to once again maintain a "School of Distinction" rating by addressing our Apprentice students and pushing them to Proficiency as well as reducing the number of students categorized as Novice on the K-PREP assessment. In addition to being a Distinguished school, FNMS has many outstanding programs and activities it offers its students: -The Football Pirates participated in the East Kentucky Mountain Conference playoffs for the third year in a row earning a number 1 seed during the regular season. - Lady Pirates Basketball Team won the LCEAA Tournament, making them county champions for the past 2 seasons. -The Pirate academic team, after having a very successful regular season, is looking to repeat last year's success of placing 1st in the Letcher County Academic Tournament in both the varsity & junior varsity categories. -The FNMS Concert Band is looking to continue its tradition of excellence under director Dan Brennan. In the Spring of 2014, the band received a Distinguished rating from the KMEC. -The FNMS Dance team is looking to continue its success this year, last year in its first year of existence, the FNMS Dance Team won first place in the Mountain Classic Cheer & Dance Championship. -FNMS continues to provide programs sponsored by its 21st Century Grant. This program supports several after school activities including Extended School Services, Homework Helper, Arts Integration, Health/Fitness and various educational field trips. -Once agin, the FNMS cafeteria is offering a third meal, served directly after school. All students have the opportunity to participate in this much needed program. - The FNMS Drama Team has been hard at work preparing and fund raising for its presentation of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" It is sponsored by one of our 7th grade Math Teacher, Mrs.. Meagen Adams. -The year marked the second year of the FNMS Bible Club. It is sponsored by Ms. Lindsay Stewart a Science/Math teacher. -Our Baseball team is currently undergoing offseason conditioning. Last year they were the County Champions and competed at the Regional completion. -Our FNMS Boys Basketball Team is in the midst of their season, last year they were the LCEAA County Runner-Up. -Our Speech team under the leadership of Mikey Sparks, will get started in January and will look to continue last year's success when some of the member's advanced to compete at the state completion. -Our Archery team is currently preparing for Meets. They have been dominant winning 5 consecutive Regional Championships and placing 13th overall in the state last year, while having a State Champion at her level, Abby Howard. Page 5
