3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

7 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT: continues to be one to the top performing high schools not just in Manatee County but on the West Coast of Florida. The culture created by a partnership between students, parents and staff along with the school's wonderful traditions are at the heart of this high performance. has, and continues to set the bar for performance in academics, sports, music, drama, technology and all extra-curricular activities. Our students and staff are consistently awarded honors for their hard work and dedication to every endeavor. Academically, has forged a reputation for excellence in Advanced Placement Classes, Dual Enrollment participation, Industry and Technology Certifications, FSA scores and overall performance in state rankings. We very proudly boast a graduation rate of ninety-four percent. Which ranks among the top in the state of Florida. Athletically, continues to perform at the highest level academically and competitively. Lakewood Ranch High School was awarded the two highest honors given by the Florida High School Athletic Association. The Mustangs placed first in the Academic Team Champions and the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup, All Sports Award. was the only public school in the State of Florida to ever win both awards in the same year. The tradition of winning the academic state championship is now in its sixth year. 's music, drama and technology departments continue to finish high in all state and national competitions. Lakewood Ranch students have a wonderful and diverse opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities that include: athletics, music, drama, Key Club, SGA, FCA, Poetry, TSA, and many more. AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: uses multiple sources to determine the school's areas of improvement. These sources include staff feedback, administrative surveys, state standardized testing data, district created benchmark data, evaluation trends/patterns. We have compiled this information and broke it down into a few areas, which are provided below: 1. Mathematics-This past year, learning gains in mathematics is an academic area where we were below the state and district average. This has been addressed through multiple strategies and has been closely monitored. 2. Staff morale staff feedback presented a feeling by some teachers concern about morale. Currently the district and the union are at impasse relating to the teachers' current year's contract. Also, there has been a major increase in the insurance premiums for those employees who carry dependents on their health insurance plans. 3. Perception of Discipline- has a long history of being perceived in the community as a school that lacks student management. During the past few years, administration has created polices to consistently enforce rules and procedures for our students. This includes closely monitoring our discipline matrix and performing multiple K-9 searches throughout the school year. 4. Hiring-Hiring highly qualified instructors has become very difficult. During the past hiring season we have had only a very few highly qualified applicants apply for our teaching vacancies. Many times these potential applicants withdraw their names from the hiring pool when they discover they will only be permitted to carry over seven years' worth of experience on our pay scale. Page 5

8 5. Student Progression- For the past several years, there has been an increase in the amount of students who enroll at LRHS ninth graders with multiple high school credits. In many cases these students take Florida Virtual School courses beyond their normal seven credits per year, which exceed the normal progress, and leave many of these students looking for courses. 6. Overcrowding- was built to occupy 1799 students. We currently have 2415 students enrolled. Continued development in this area shows enrollment will be increasing in the next few years. Page 6

The LRHS Theatre Department gives students many opportunities in acting, musical theatre, dance, and playwriting, both in an out of the classroom, which has led to years of achievement. Each year we present Cabaret Shows, full Musical Productions, One-Act Plays, and at the end of each year our Playwriting Marathon and Costume Design and Stage Makeup Showcase in which all students in Theatre classes produce their own original works for the public. This is their Final Exam Showcase and Porfolio. Over the past (17) years, students have received hundreds of accolades and awards competing in district and state level thespian competitions with the International Thespian Society in the areas of acting, musical theatre, pantomime, costume design, stage makeup, playwriting, one-act plays, and mainstages. Many of our students are recipients of thousands of dollars in scholarship and talent-based scholarship and financial aid in many of the top, prestigious performing arts schools in the nation, and we have many students who have Page 9

12 successful careers as professional actors on stage, in film and television as well as in arts administration, stage management, costume design, and theatre technology. The LRHS Theatre Department is also very community minded and frequently performs for the school and community at many events. We also have a summer camp program, Acting Up Performing Arts Summer Camp each summer for the past (15) which serves students kindergarten through rising 9th graders. This summer camp exposes young students to the performing arts in the areas of acting, art, dance, and music. The students spend (3) weeks working on a Broadway Jr. musical production that is performed publically at the end of the camp. It is also a community service project for our high school students since they work as counselors at the camp program. Currently, our award-winning department is working on a devised theatrical piece which is an original musical production written by the students. The students are working with professional teaching artists from TADA! Youth Theatre in New York City. This original work will be performed in our theatre on February 17 and 18, 2017, and then the students will be performing this incredible work Off-Broadway on March 20, 2017 in New York City.
