1 October 14, 2016 Beebe s Byline Greetings Heritage Families, Today marks the 6th week of school and I must say we are off to a great start this year! Students and staff are settling in to routines and great learning is underway at Heritage. I ve enjoyed visiting various classrooms and seeing our students engaged in fun activities and thoughtful conversations. I m enjoying getting to know the students and learning their names. Our 7th graders have become expert at navigating their way around the building and locker issues seem to be a thing of the past. I m so impressed by our 8th and 9th grade students. This is a very mature and responsible group. With that said, please remind your student to arrive to school daily on-time. We are still experiencing some excessive tardies to school in the morning. By the same token, some students are arriving much too early. School starts at 8:10. We do not want students left outside in the dark, especially as the cooler temperatures become the norm. Heritage students should not arrive before 7:45, unless the student has a prearranged appointment with a teacher. If your son or daughter walks to school or rides a bike, please remind him/her to use the crosswalk. There is a crossing guard on duty during arrival and dismissal and this is the best way to ensure students safety. As we approach the 2nd marking period, I want to remind all parents to check PowerSchool for your son/daughter s most up-to-date progress report. If you do not have PowerSchool access, I urge you to stop by the main office to access your child s login information. PowerSchool is a great way to keep up with your child s regular progress and ensure that he/she is always putting his/her best foot forward. If you have concerns about your student s grades, you should contact the teacher first. is probably the best way to initiate this process and you can access the teacher s directly through PowerSchool. Be sure to reach out to your child s counselor or an administrator if you need additional support. The first dance of the year is Friday, October 21. The dance will begin at 3:15 and ends promptly at 5:00 PM. Students are not allowed to leave the dance early. The cost is $5.00. The gym will also be open during this time. All students will be able to return to their lockers after the dance to get their belongings. Please be sure you have made appropriate arrangements for pick-up after the dance. I look forward to seeing all the Heritage Hornets at the dance! Don t forget the first of two UCS community meetings is scheduled for Wednesday, October 19th, 7 p.m. at Henry Ford II High School Performing Arts Center. Our Superintendent, Dr. Johns, will be hosting these important meetings to share information on school funding and What s the Cost of Educating a Child? We want you to be informed and need your support. Please plan to attend this week, October 19th or November 16th at Eisenhower Performing Arts Center.

3 Rehn A-J DeVuyst K-Z The Academic Assistance Program, which meets Tuesdays after school, is in room 340 from 3:10-4pm. If your student is struggling with a class or classes, please have them sign up to see their counselor for a Parent Request/Permission form. Attention Current 9th Grade Students Your progress toward high school graduation starts NOW. If a high school student (9th -12th) earns an F in two of the three report card grades (two quarters and one exam=semester grade=.5 credits) the student will lose.5 credit for that semester. In order to graduate from UCS 22 high school credits must be earned to include the specific credits listed below: 4 credits of English 4 credits of Math (Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 11, and one senior year math credit) 3 credits of Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics, and one additional science credit) 3 credits Social Studies (World History, US History, Economics, and Government).5 credit of PE.5 credit of Health 1 credit of VPPA (visual, performing, applied arts) 2 credits of World Language (level 1 and level 2 of the same language consecutively) Please feel free to call, , or set up an appointment with your student's counselor to discuss any questions or concerns.

4 Important District Information: Important information was shared with parents at our Curriculum Night/Open House regarding the impact Michigan school funding formula is having on Utica Community Schools. The information from Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns is titled What s the Cost of Educating a Child? If you have not had the opportunity to read the material, we encourage you to do so as it is important to the future of our school and district. Copies of the materials are available in our school office or can be found on the district website at We also encourage you to attend one of the community meetings about this issue: October 19 at 7 p.m. at Henry Ford II Performing Arts Center and November 16 at 7 p.m. at the Eisenhower Performing Arts Center. The agendas for both meetings will be the same. Please contact me if you have any questions at the school office Happenings In the Classroom: 8th grade Life Skills students displayed projects Tuesday that explained how to become successful. Students gathered tips to becoming successful by interviewing adults of all different ages. You Can Help! Dear Parents, We need your help! I have applied for a grant for Heritage for money to purchase a few graphing calculators. We have had the current calculators at least 10 years. Although the students have done an excellent job taking care of the calculators a few are no longer functional due to battery corrosion and normal wear and tear. We are looking to replace those broken calculators so we still have enough for students to borrow in class. How can you help? 5 Free or Reduced Breakfast/Lunch Based on your total household income, your child may qualify for meals at a reduced or free rate. If you believe you may be eligible, please go to the web site to apply. Students who received free/reduced meals last school year must complete a new application. You are invited to attend and meet with Mrs. Greene-Beebe in the Media Center Conference Room. A variety of important school topics will be discussed. Afternoon meetings will run from 5:30-6:30 pm. 7 Parking/Traffic Flow Enter the parking lot from the south driveway. Drop off your student in the back of the building. Continue around to the front of the building. Exit at the north driveway. NO STUDENTS ARE TO BE DROPPED OFF AT THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. Before and after school can be a very busy time in the parking lot. There are many students trying to get to school and home safely. Students will be crossing the driveway in the front of the school. It is very important all traffic signs and rules are obeyed. Students are to be dropped off and picked up in the back of the building only. When dropping off or picking up, please pull all the way along the yellow cub to allow others to drop off their child as well. No one is to be dropped off or picked up in the front of the building. When returning to the front of the building to exit, form two lanes after you pass the yield sign. Those in the left lane will turn south on to Dodge Park Road and those in the right lane will turn north on to Dodge Park Road. This will help eliminate one long line. Patience goes a long way in the parking lot! Thank you for your cooperation! Heritage Hornet Sports Athletes are encouraged to have their rides at school when practice ends. Coaches supervise the students at school until they are picked up. Admission Prices for the 2016/2017 School Year: Adults: $2.00 Students: $1.00 (Grade 7 & up) UCS Passes are also accepted. **Admission will be charged for all games. **Concessions are available! SPORTS ELIGIBILITY Heritage Junior High School has a weekly eligibility program in place for all athletes. The expectation is that all athletes maintain satisfactory grades and good conduct marks throughout the school year. The coaches and staff want all our athletes to represent our school with pride, both as a student in the classroom and an athlete in the sports arena. The eligibility form is given to the athlete each Wednesday before or after practice or game. The athlete will give the form to each of his/her teachers on Thursdays throughout the season. The athlete s teachers will write the grade and conduct mark on the form for that week and sign it. At the end of the school day on Thursday, the athlete will return the completed form to his/her coach who will submit it to the athletic director. Athletes who receive 2 F s, 2 D s, or 1 U in a given week are ineligible to participate in their next athletic contest. Athletes with poor grades/conduct marks will receive a letter from the athletic director informing them of their grades and ineligibility. Parents of the athletes are asked to sign the letter and have their athlete return it to the coach.
