1 Spring Newsletter 2010 East Hartford High School Spring Newsletter DRESS CODE The dress code continues to be a point of emphasis at East Hartford High School. The administration and staff of East Hartford High School is firmly committed to the development of a school culture that is reflective of learning and excellence. We ask that you discuss your child s clothing choices. Some questions for consideration are: Is the outfit appropriate for a school environment? Do the clothes reflect the person I am or want to be? Do the clothes follow the dress code outlined on page 38 in the Handbook? We build excellence by having pride in our appearance. Of special note is appropriate wearing of pants and jeans. Please encourage your sons to wear their pants at waist level. Additionally, please encourage your daughters to wear shirts with sleeves and acceptable neck lines, and shorts and skirts that are appropriate in length. If your son or daughter is not able to dress in an appropriate manner, they will be subject to administrative action including being sent home. Thank you for your attention in this matter.. GRADUATION We are proud to announce that the Commencement Exercises for the East Hartford High School Class of 2010 will be held on June 23, 2010 at The Bushnell in Hartford, CT. The graduation ceremony will begin promptly at 7:00 PM. This new venue was the result of a change after unforeseen influences with regard to last year s graduation site. Please be assured that The William H. Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell is an extremely beautiful facility with superb visual sight lines and tremendous acoustics. After last year s graduation committee completed an analysis of available sites, this year s committee reviewed the information and decided on The Bushnell. The committee was comprised of administration: Matthew Ryan and David DeCarli, faculty: Yesenia Hernandez and Laura White. All information regarding tickets, expectations, photographs, diplomas and Project Graduation will be forthcoming through assemblies, announcements and flyers. Please call the main office with any questions you may have: HOME ACCESS CENTER: Communication between families and high school educators is an essential element to student success in school. Our student information system, eschoolplus, offers the Home Access Center. Home Access Center is a program that allows families to monitor their child s academic progress on-line. Several school districts with eschoolplus are using the Home Access Center as a way to establish stronger family and school communication. Currently, Connecticut International Baccalureate Academy is piloting this aspect of eschoolplus and has found success with it. Our goal is to provide Home Access Center access to all EHHS families by the fall of Additional information regarding the use of this on-line family involvement resource will be sent to you as implementation progresses.

2 Spring Newsletter The 10th Grade Desk of Mrs. Anderson: As the Class of 2012 finishes out their sophomore year it is imperative that they remain focused at the task of earning high marks and achieving junior class status. Students are advised to meet with their guidance counselor, if they have not already, to set their after high school goals and planning for achieving these goals. Students need to finish these last few weeks on their academic team strong in preparation for the challenges they will be facing as upperclassmen. Additionally, as the weather gets warmer, students need to continue to adhere to the East Hartford High School attendance policy and not reach the magic numbers of 10 absences for semester courses and 20 for full year courses. In closing, I would like to take this moment to THANK all the 10 th grade team teachers and all the 10 th grade parents for the support they have given House 10 this year. The teachers of 10A, 10B, 10C, 10D, 10E, 10T, and 10H need to be commended for their excellent work this year in getting each and every sophomore ready for their junior year. I truly believe that East Hartford High school has a school/community partnership that allows students many opportunities to begin, build and become responsible citizens. I look forward to continuing to work with the parents of the class of 2012 as we close out this school year. Recently, the sophomore class has booked a date for the junior prom at Maneeleys. The scheduled prom date is Friday May 13, The class advisors will be working together to begin the early phases of planning for their junior prom. Furthermore, the class of 2012 has been discussing some interesting ideas for future fundraisers. The class of 2012 certainly looks forward to the many exciting activities taking place over the next two years!

3 Spring Newsletter 2010 The 11th Grade Desk of Mr. Fote: Working your Way Towards College"...is a recurring theme expressed by representatives from grade 11 including Mr. Fote (First Assistant Principal), Fal Patel (School Counselor), Patty Cohen (School Counselor) and teachers. In support of students, College Nights (March 17 at EH Cultural Center/6:30pm and March 24 EHHS/6:30pm) were planned by Mrs. Patel and Mrs. Cohen. The purpose of the College Night was to introduce options for post secondary education and explain the process that both the student and parent will embark upon. We realize this is a stressful time however, planning for your future needs to carefully thought out. Representatives from various colleges were in attendance and a powerful presentation outlining the college selection process was most helpful. Other important information including the completion of the FAFSA form, EHHS college visits, SSAT/PSAT free classes and college fairs were announced. It was a great night of information but even more important it was a great night directing our students and encouraging them to climb the American ladder of opportunity. Any future questions regarding the college selection process or a copy of the presentation can be directed toward Mrs. Cohen/Mrs. Patel. Junior Class Advisors: Maria White / Laura White Michelle Sheatsley The Class of 2011 is celebrating its last few months as juniors by getting ready for the Junior Prom! The prom will be held at Maneeley s on Friday, May 7, 2010 from 6:00 11:00 pm. Tickets will be on sale during the week of April during most lunch waves. Junior class officers and students have been meeting in order to decide what the invitations, favors, and decorations should look like, based on the prom theme Bright Lights, Big City: New York, New York. As a result of selling at least sixteen coffee-cakes during our February fundraiser, fourteen juniors earned a free prom ticket! All sales made during this fundraiser also helped build up the junior class fund. Way to go, juniors! Before summer begins, the junior class will be taking care of various tasks for next year, such as reserving High Meadows for their Senior Class Picnic, looking into potential Senior Ball venues, discussing future fundraising ideas, and voting on class officers for the school year. PBS News The Positive Behavior Support Team is heading into spring - full swing! We have been meeting every month to plan and implement new ideas, such as the Principals Coffees and Teacher Gotchas, as well as to build on and maintain ideas that are already in place, such as the Getting it Done display case, the Student of the Month wall, and the student Brag Boards. At our meeting on Monday, March 15, the PBS team met with Manchester High School faculty members and interns who are part of the MHS Positive Behavior Support team. They initially contacted one of our PBS committee members, stating, Our PBS team here at MHS is in the second year of implementation and we would love to come see other high schools that are making PBS work. We are excited that in our sixth year of having PBS at East Hartford High, we have developed a program that others can use as a model for creating their own successful PBS programs. Articles about the great things happening at EHHS continue to be published in local newspapers such as the The Gazette, The Reminder, and the Journal Inquirer. Recent press releases include write-ups about the Mr. EHHS Competition, the College Fair and College Informational Nights, the Bunny Breakfast, and the five-time EHHS State Champion Cheerleading Squad. We appreciate the support from these newspapers and will continue to send them positive and informative articles through PBS for the remainder of the school year!

4 Spring Newsletter The 12th Grade Desk of Mr. DeCarli: It is hard to believe that the 4th Quarter has begun. While Spring weather is an easy distraction, now, more than ever, it is important for Seniors to be putting forth their best effort in school and making their future plans come true. At this point, you should know your current credit status, college plans, financial aid and scholarship information, completed the college application process and conducted a career choice inventory. Hopefully you had an excellent experience with the Upperclassmen seminars back in March, culminating with the college fair, gaining insight into what higher education and the work force has to offer. MAY 4- Senior Class Trip to New York City! We will be touring the Apollo Theater and visiting Central Park. Optional cost and visit to the Central Park Zoo and shopping on 5th avenue near Central Park. Cost: $42.00, Central Park Zoo- $10.00, bring lunch or money for lunch in the area. We will leave EHHS at 7:30am and return at 6:00pm. Seniors must meet C rule and a disciplinary record will be reviewed. **First 50 eligible seniors to return permission slips will go! Continue focusing on your academic and social successes from this past Fall and Winter and finish STRONG. If you have stumbled along the way, it is never too late to pick yourself up and achieve. Stay for extra help, turn in all your work and clear up any of your academic concerns by meeting with your teachers. Again, take time to meet with an adult in this building to discuss your future and your plan to successfully achieve those goals. As always, be safe, be responsible and be respectful. Everyone at EHHS wants to see you begin your career here, build a solid foundation, and become a successful member of society. Get ready, very soon you will be graduating from East Hartford High School! 5 Spring Newsletter The 9th Grade Desk of: Mrs. Marion Moving into the fourth quarter is the stretch run for all ninth graders. This semester is the time to finish strong or take that last deep breath and give it your best effort. This quarter, you are forming habits and patterns that will stay with you into the sophomore year make it count!! If not, take this step today You are writing your own success story, you are the creator of your identity and future. Refuse to allow this identity to be taken from you. By believing in your success, your actions will lead you on a road to excellence. Note to students and parents: Loss of credit letters and warning letters of the possibility of losing credit are going home regularly. Make sure you maintain great attendance throughout the rest of this school year so that you can earn your credits for sophmore year. If you have any questions about a specific class and the number of absences you may have, please see your guidance counselor for this information. If you have already received a loss of credit letter and you have an extenuating circumstance, please complete the form included in your letter and return to Ms. Marion's office as soon as possible. Otherwise you should be asking your guidance counselor about summer school and how to enroll. Don t wait until the last minute! Stay focused throughout the fourth quarter. Remember the three A s of success at East Hartford High Attendance, Academics and Attitude. Athletic Office of: Dave Caruso Our spring sports season is officially underway after a cold winter. Our student-athletes have been working extremely hard to prepare for their competitions. They are honing their skills and building team chemistry as they work toward achieving their individual and team goals. The coaches are always positive and encourage all the athletes to do their best! They are putting in a tremendous amount of time and energy getting their student-athletes ready to compete. It is truly great watching our student athletes and coaches represent our school on the field, track and courts. I strongly encourage you to come out and support our teams and see the wonderful work they are doing. GO HORNETS! Freshman Class Advisor: Nicole Shea The Freshman class is looking forward to the upcoming Pride Night and the Taste of Pride at the end of May where we will be running several carnival games and a fundraiser. We are excited about the elections for next years class officers and are looking to plan many more fundraising opportunities to build our funds for junior and senior year. Before summer arrives, our goal is that each and every student has become a better, much improved version of who they were last year. With that realization, we are proud that East Hartford High School continues Building Excellence Together by Making A Difference. Now is the time to maintain a high level of interest in the lessons and learning. Parents are urged to be involved with long-term projects and daily assignments: continue to urge your child to finish strong and stay focused. The months of May and June are a celebratory time for the Senior Class. There are many activities coming up! Included in this newsletter is a calendar of events. Participating in these events affords the students, parents and staff the opportunity to celebrate and appreciate four years of dedication and accomplishments at East Hartford High School. With graduation on June 23 rd at The Bushnell in Hartford, we are all very excited to witness the Class of 2010 exhibit their Hornet Pride in a most memorable event!
