1 PROPOSAL FOR NEW STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN LYON, FRANCE, IN COLLABORATION WITH USAC (University Studies Abroad Consortium) RATIONALE: In consultation with the French faculty in the Department of Languages, the Center for International Education would like to offer the USAC-Lyon spring and year option to students. Currently, UW-Eau Claire students can study abroad during the spring and year with the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) in Pau, France. However, French language students only have one location in comparison to German, Japanese, and Spanish students that all have multiple options for language study. The USAC-Lyon program would offer a different experience for students interested in a metropolitan area. Lyon is a city of 1.5 million located in eastern France within close distance of Switzerland and Italy. By contrast, Pau is a small city of 100,000 located in the southwest of France near Bordeaux within close distance of Spain. USAC added the Lyon program in , when the Pau program reached capacity and another site was needed to accommodate growing interest. UW-Eau Claire students have been participating in the Pau, France semester/year program since spring 2008 with good results. Students are well supported by the in-country USAC staff. Costs increases on the semester program have been quite modest. We sent the first group of students to the USAC-Pau program in spring 2008 with a tuition charge of $5680 and in spring 2014 the students are being charged $6180 for tuition an increase of only 8% over the course of seven years. ENROLLMENT LIMITS: USAC s stated maximum enrollment for the program is 40 students. The anticipated UWEC enrollment for Lyon, France is 2-5 students. ACADEMIC LOGISTICS: How are grades reported? USAC courses will be reported on a USAC grade report as they currently are for the USAC-Pau semester/year option. What language is used on the above document? If not English, what resources are required for an English translation? USAC grade reports are issued in English. No translation services are required. What credit system is used and how does it translate into U.S. credits? USAC grade reports provide report credits using the U.S. semester system.

2 How is course level determined? Course levels match UW-Eau Claire s: 100, 200, 300, 400 are the four levels. What grade scale is used and what is the conversion to UWEC grades? Grades are reported on using the standard A-F scale with plus and minus designations. CURRICULUM: Credits Students will take between credits during a semester. Students are required to take 12 credits of French language and/or literature at the Institute of French Studies with other international students. Students must enroll in one French and European Studies course or a course at the L Université Lumière Lyon 2, which ranges from 1 to 3 credits. A maximum of 18 credits may be taken per semester. Courses The curriculum is focused on French language study. A placement test will be administered before the semester to help place students into the appropriate language level. Students must also enroll in one elective class in French or European Studies. Elective course offerings vary slightly each semester. Some are taught in English; others are taught in French to allow students of all language levels to access a French and/or European studies elective. French Stylistics (FLL/FREN, 400-level, 3 credits) Prerequisite: six semesters of Seminar in French Language (FLL, 400/600-level, 3 credits) Prerequisite: six semesters of French and European Studies Electives offered in

Survey of French Literature (FLL, 300-level, 3 credits, taught in French) Prerequisite: four semesters of college French [vp course] Spring Semester Intercultural Communication (COM, 400-level, 3 credits, taught in French) Politics and Economics in the European Union (ECON/PSC, 300-level, 3 credits) Provence and Avignon Field Study (FLL/ANTH, 200-level, 1 credit) This course has an additional fee for the tour. Survey of French Art (ART, 400-level, 3 credits) Survey of French Literature II (FLL, 300-level, 3 credits, taught in French) Prerequisite: four semesters of college French Travel Photography (JOUR/ART/PHOTO, 200-level, 1 credit, taught in French) Host University Courses L Université Lumière Lyon 2 provides the opportunity to enroll in regular courses taught by French university professors. Under this option, students with adequate language will have the chance to experience French university life with degree-seeking students. Courses are offered in business, economics, international relations, English literature and grammar, and more. These courses are taken in addition to the full time USAC course load. Students may choose a host university course to fulfill their 3-credit elective requirement. However, transfer of credit is not guaranteed for host university courses. L Université Lumière Lyon 2 course grades will not be part of students official USAC record as no Université Lumière Lyon 2 transcript can be issued at this time. USAC is working with the university in hopes that host university course may be recorded on the USAC record at some point in the future. However, USAC will forward a letter or certificate of completion that is provided by the host university. INSTITUTION: Per the USAC Web site, L Université Lumière Lyon 2, or University of Lyon 2, was created in 1973 and specializes in subjects such as humanities, language, and law. The university has two campuses: the Berges de Rhône campus is situated on the banks of the Rhône River and the Portes des Alpes campus is located closer to the city center. Your language courses and the majority of your electives will be held on the Berges de Rhône

4 campus. This is a more traditional campus with historic buildings and green lawns. If you enroll in additional courses through the university, they may be held on the Portes des Alpes campus. This campus has more modern facilities including a large sports center. A tram runs between the two campuses for the convenience of students. The International Center for French Studies (CIEF) Our students will take courses at CIEF, which is a part of the university. Per USAC, The International Center for French Studies at the University Lumière Lyon 2 specializes in language and culture training for a non-french speaking public, whether or not they are enrolled in higher education courses at the University Lyon 2, or another university, or in a Grande Ecole in the Université de Lyon higher education and research hub. The CIEF has the advantage of a high-quality team of teaching staff, composed of more than 24 permanent staff members and around 80 temporary teachers. The CIEF, like the other 40 centers in France, is a member of the Association of Directors of University Centers for French Studies for Foreigners (ADCUEFE): Campus FLE. The CIEF has signed the ADCUEFE s quality charter: ADCUEFE/ Campus FLE. Website: campus-fle.fr. The CIEF proposes a social site with linguistic, communicative and inter-cultural objectives for foreign students enrolled at the CIEF of the University Lumière Lyon 2: the Rezo- Lumière: ACCOMMODATIONS: Students have the option to live in a homestay with a French family in Lyon and the neighboring suburbs or in the university residence halls. The homestay with the French family is highly recommended due the language learning and cultural benefits. CALENDAR: The USAC-Lyon, France academic calendar aligns nicely with the UW-Eau Claire. The academic year runs from the first-week of September to third week of May. Below are the spring 2015 dates as we expect most students will participate in the spring term. A similar calendar is expected for future programs.
