Advanced Placement (AP) testing will begin at the Academy next week. The students who are testing met with Ms. Schroeder this week to prepare. AP tests can be used for college credit if students score high enough. This can result in substantial savings depending on the college your son or daughter chooses to attend. If you have questions about the testing schedule, then please contact the school. Spartatroniks finished a great run in St. Louis last weekend. The team placed in the top 25 percent of all the teams at the World Championship. It is amazing what they have been able to accomplish in two short years. I know that they will continue to grow and serve as a shining example of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) focus of the Academy. The end of the year is quickly approaching. Second Semester grades are very important. These grades determine placement for next school year. Please stay on top of your student s progress. You can utilize the Aeries Parent Portal to see where things stand in every class. If you cannot access the portal, then please contact the school. This tool is very helpful, if you use it. The Orcutt Academy High School Talent Show is next 6:30 p.m. in the OAHS MU. There are some very talented students here at the Academy. Mr. Ricardo Gabaldon is coordinating the show and is very excited about this year s performance. I am hoping that many of you can attend. I am sure you will be entertained. Finally, next week is staff appreciation week. The Academy is lucky to have outstanding certificated and classified staff members. The students receive the very best education possible due to the dedication and commitment of our staff. If you get an opportunity, then please thank a staff member next week. They are very deserving and I am sure they would love to hear from you. The OAHS PTSA is coordinating an appreciation luncheon on Thursday, May 10th. Grades K-3 Stephanie Krouse will be teaching a 6-week long visual arts course on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 pm (OCAF Members $60/Non-Member participants $75). Kids will get to paint, draw, create, and explore their imaginations! Grades 3-6 Tracey Sparks will be teaching a 5-week music course on Mondays from 4:00-5:00pm ($50 OCAF Members/$65 for Non- Member Partcipants.) No classes held Monday May 28- in honor of Memorial Day.) Classes will be held at Ralph Dunlap School. We have Board and committee positions open for next year. If you cannot help on the board there are a number of ways to help during the year that benefit your student s sport. The next Boosters Club General Meeting will be held May 7th at 6 p.m. in the MU at OAHS. We would like to invite parents that will be having an athlete at the school to come to the meeting and find out how you can help. Award amount: $500. Deadline: May 11 SM Rotary South Community College Scholarship. Award amount: $500 guaranteed to an OAHS student! Deadline: May 15 SM Rotary South University Scholarship. Award amount: $500 guaranteed to an OAHS student! Deadline: May 15 SM Valley Contractor s Association Scholarship. Award amount: $1,000. Deadline: May 17 Charles C. Forbes Engineering and Design Scholarship. Award amount: $1,000. Deadline: May 24 Another way you can keep up to date on the latest news of who s getting accepted to colleges and other scholarship opportunities, just like the Orcutt Academy College and Career Planning page on Facebook! The Youth Making a Change (YMC) program is seeking applicants for their YMC Boards. Board members are teens ages They create and conduct an entire grant cycle from start to finish and then share what they have learned as grant-makers and philanthropists with their communities. Each YMC board is led by two Youth Facilitators who are previous YMC board members. Facilitators assist the board in meeting its objectives; as well as provide an experienced youth perspective on the grantmaking process. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO ADD TO THEIR RESUMES when applying for colleges and scholarships! Deadline is May 31. Students who need to finish up community service hours for the school year can find lots of opportunities listed on our Community Service page of the OAHS College Career Website! Congratulations to Deanna Vogel for winning this week s College T-shirt Contest! Deanna knew that if you take the PSAT test your freshmen or sophomore year...it s still very necessary for you to take it your junior year. Juniors who take the PSAT are automatically entered into the National Merit Scholarship Award and have access to college/career planning tools on collegeboard.com. A big thank you to Pam Brown, mom of OAHS student Sydney Brown for their recent donation to the OAHS Library! Thank you for thinking of us! The OAHS Library is accepting donations of gently used books to add to our library! Library hours are 10-4 Monday and Tuesday, 9-3 Wednesday and Thursday and 7-1 Fridays. 6 Orcutt Academy High School Students and Parents PTSA is proud that it only takes 2 fundraisers per year to support our schools requests from teachers & students (Cow Chip Bingo and the BBQ). With your support, again this year, we can come up with the balance to close out the year. Wednesday May 16th, the Spartan Showcase will take place from 6:00-8:15 p.m. PTSA will be holding a BBQ Fundraiser from 5:00-7:30 at the school. We all know hard is it to try to get dinner before a school function, so come a few minutes early and have a tri-tip sandwich, chips, and a drink before you walk around campus. Pick up orders will also be available if you can t stay for the Spartan Showcase. We are excited to have Big Daddy s Oak Pit BBQ this year to prepare the meal. The BBQ Ticket price is an $8.00 donation to PTSA. Please come and support our school, we need your help so PTSA can continue to enrich the experience of Orcutt Academy, like fund teacher grants, graduation activities, scholarships, art grants, and more! In order to make this event as successful as possible, we need everyone s participation. Yesterday students were given PTSA BBQ tickets in their Spartan Seminar class to sell for the night of the Spartan Showcase May 16th. Please be sure they keep track of them as the tickets or the money for them are due back on the collection dates May 2nd and 9th. We also need volunteers to help the night of the BBQ. Are you (or do you know) a young person ages who wants to make positive change in the community? We are looking for energetic and opinionated young people to join the YMC Boards. Youth Making Change (YMC) is a teen-led grant-making program providing young people with the opportunity to engage directly in organized philanthropy (giving grants). Each YMC Board (one meets in Santa Maria and one meets in Santa Barbara) gives out $10,000 in grants to projects led by youth that impact young people in Santa Barbara County. 7 ~DISTRACTED DRIVER PRESENTATION~ ~CHANGE OF DATE FOR PRESENTATION~ In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in crashes involving driver distraction, and an estimated 448,000 were injured, according to the NHTSA 40% of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger, according to a PEW Research Study Driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37%, according to the Carnegie Mellon Institute. If these facts concern you, please attend the Orcutt Academy High School Distracted Driver Presentation Wednesday, May 30th at 6:30pm in the OAHS Multi-Purpose room. Guest speaker Eilene Okerblom will share information, and her very personal experience about the effects of Distracted Driving. In July 2009, her 19-year old son, Eric was killed by a distracted driver while he was riding his bike in Santa Maria. Since then, Eilene has dedicated her energy and time to get the word out about distracted driving. We need to make sure we also tell our children, over and over again, the dangers of distracted driving, she said in a Santa Maria Times interview. Distracted driving is also wrong, because it kills.
