4 COACHING STAFF DAVE UHRICH 14th 15th Year Head Coach Marquette University ( 85) Dave Uhrich is in his 14th season as the head coach of Marquette's men's cross country and track and field programs and is in his ninth year as Marquette's women's cross country and track and field head coach. He is responsible for the academic and athletic development of his student-athletes as well as the organization and supervision of both the MU cross country and track and field programs. In 2000, Uhrich was named Conference USA and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year in Women's Cross Country. In Uhrich was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in Women's Cross Country as he led the Golden Eagles to the conference title. In , he was named the C-USA Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year after the indoor and outdoor seasons as he guided the Golden Eagles to the league title in each season. In , Uhrich swept Conference USA Coach of the Year honors in women's cross country, women's indoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field. Uhrich earned his fourth consecutive Great Midwest Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year award after his men's squad captured its fourth consecutive conference title in He has also received the Conference USA Coach of the Year award in men's indoor track (1995) and Great Midwest Conference Coach of the Year honors in men's outdoor track (1993, 95), women's indoor track (1993, 94) and women's cross country (1993, 94). Uhrich has had considerable success with the women's cross country team. In 1995, he guided the squad to a national ranking, the first by a women's team in Marquette history. In 1997, the team repeated that feat. Marquette has won three of the past six women's cross country conference titles and finished fifth at the NCAA Great Lakes Region meet in 1995, '97, and '99. In 2000, the team was consistently ranked in the nation's top 25, was Conference USA champions and placed third at the regional meet. The team made their first ever trip to the NCAA Championships, placing 27th overall. A four-year letterwinner in cross country and track at Marquette, Uhrich enjoyed a very successful collegiate career. He qualified for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship in 1981 and Uhrich won the NCAA Region IV cross country individual title in He was Marquette's Most Valuable Runner in 1981 and 1982 and served as team captain in Uhrich earned All-Central Collegiate honors from He is one of three Marquette runners to earn All-National Catholic honors for four consecutive years ( ). Additionally, he earned Track and Field Association All-American honors during the 1981 cross country season. Uhrich holds five indoor school records and was a member of the 3,200-meter and distance medley relay teams that established school records. Uhrich also owns two outdoor school records and was a member of the record-setting 3,200-meter and 6,400-meter relay teams. He qualified seven times for the NCAA Indoor National Championships. In 1999, he was inducted into the Marquette Hall of Fame. Prior to coming to Marquette, Uhrich won the Wisconsin high school state mile championships in 1979 and 1980 as a member of the Manitowoc Lincoln team. He graduated from Marquette in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. His older brother, Michael, is in his ninth year as the head men's and women's cross country coach at Saint Louis. Uhrich, 39, and his wife, Toni, reside in Wauwatosa with their son, Steffen, and daughter, CeCe. 4

5 JEFF HOSKISSON 4th Year Sprints, Hurdles, Jumps Eastern Oregon ( 84) Jeff Hoskisson is in his fourth year as an assistant track and field coach for both the men's and women's teams at Marquette. His main responsibility is working with the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and multi-eventers. Prior to coming to Marquette, Hoskisson coached at Emporia State (KS) University ( ), Central Missouri State University ( ), and the College of Southern Idaho ( ). During that time he coached 20 All-Americans, seven Academic All-Americans and 23 conference champions. Hoskisson, a former high school All-American sprinter, is a USATF Level I and II certified coach and a Level I instructor. In 1990, he was an assistant coach on the U.S. World Junior Championship team. He coached two relay teams to gold medals and the 4 x 100 relay team set a world junior low altitude record. From , he was a member of the USOC Olympic Sprint Development Committee. He is a member of the International Track & Field Coaches Association and the U.S. Track Coaches Association. Hoskisson is a frequent clinic speaker and has published numerous articles on sprinting. Hoskisson graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 1984 with a bachelor of science in secondary education. He received his master's degree in sports management and marketing from Central Missouri State University. Hoskisson, 42, lives with his wife, Christie, and daughter, Amber, in Oak Creek. Hoskisson also has five children from a previous marriage: Abby, Benjamin, Emily, Blake and Haley. COACHING STAFF JASON STUKE 2nd Year Throws Emporia State ( 99) Jason Stuke is in his second year as an assistant track and field coach at Marquette. His main responsibility is working with the women's and men's throws group. Before coming to Marquette, Stuke coached two years at Auburn University ( ) as a graduate assistant. While at Auburn, he worked in a program that produced two Olympians and multiple All-Americans. In addition, Stuke aided in the strength and conditioning program at Auburn. While at Auburn, he began his Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology, which he plans to finish at Marquette. Stuke is a graduate of Emporia State (KS) University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Stuke was a national champion in the shot put in From Stuke qualified for the USATF Nationals in the shot put and discus. He was Emporia State's male student athlete of the year in both 1996 and He was a member of the 1994 World Junior Championship team that competed in Lisbon, Portugal. Stuke lives with his wife, Karina, in West Allis. WOMEN S COACHING HISTORY Did you know... 7 WOMEN S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW The Marquette women s cross country team hopes that history is able to repeat itself and hopefully have an even better result. Following a Conference USA Championship, a berth in the NCAA Championships and a No. 24 national ranking, the 2001 women s team looks to continue and build upon that success. We ve worked really hard to get competitive at a national level, said Head Coach David Uhrich. We finally made it to that level; we need to do the things we have been doing. The Golden Eagles will be able to stay competitive this season. The team will only lose one runner from last year s top seven. Erika Jacobson, a senior on the 2000 team, was a key contributor, finishing in Marquette s top five consistently. Erika was a very valuable runner on this team, but she is the only runner not returning from a year ago, added Uhrich, the 2000 Conference USA Women s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Bolstering the team s fortunes are the return of three runners who were redshirted during the 2000 season. Seniors Sarah McCullough, Kiley Reese and Jackie Swan all possess considerable meet experience and will be ready to compete in The trio promise to give the team added depth and experience which should help the squad be a force to be reckoned with in each competition. The experience the Golden Eagles possess will undoubtedly be a factor in the team's success this year. Losing only one runner keeps most of last year s squad intact and coach Uhrich hopes that the feeling of success will once again be in the Golden Eagle locker room. At this point, they are full of confidence, said Uhrich. We did so well last year and we realized we can compete better this year. They have been there, they have been to the biggest meets. Highlighting the returning veterans will be junior Susan Barth. She is coming off of a season in which she crossed the finish line first twice and was the top Marquette runner in every race. Barth earned all-conference status by finishing second overall at the Conference USA Championship meet. A leader of the team, Barth missed All-American status by only 18 seconds and Coach Uhrich believes Barth is ready to take her ability to another level. The nice thing with Susan is with every season and every year she has gotten better and better," stated Uhrich. "She sets high goals for herself and is very motivated. She is ready to take that next step to All-America status this season, said Uhrich. A couple of veterans who should continue their consistent contributions include senior Bethany Harry and junior Jessie Swan, both of whom landed all-conference recognition last year. Last year s strong freshman class, headed by Conference USA Freshman of the Year Brianna Dahm and Audrey Schiltz, a consistent runner in Marquette s top five, will return to a team looking to repeat as conference champions. Leading this year s freshman class is Rachel Kirvan who finished third overall in the Michigan Cross Country Championship meet. With this year s team having considerable experience; all the freshmen will need to work their way into the lineup. Uhrich believes Kirvan is ready. If she makes a slight step up from what she was running her senior year in high school, she could make some good contributions to this team, Uhrich said. The competitiveness of the conference will be of the same caliber as in the past. The last couple of the years it has been Marquette and South Florida competing for the title. Both teams again appear to be strong. Tulane could be in the hunt for the conference the title if it is able to find depth to back up their group of top runners. 9 MEN S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW When looking at the 2001 Men s Cross Country roster, experience is an item that is in abundance on the Marquette team. Combine a total of three fifth-year seniors, three seniors and three returning redshirts from a year ago, then it is easy to see why Head Coach Dave Uhrich is optimistic on improving upon the team s fourth-place finish at the Conference USA Championships last year. The men s team actually has more veterans than the women, said Uhrich. Six runners out of our top ten have at least four years of experience. Like the women, the men lost only one runner from their top seven, that being Joel Brusewitz. The top Marquette finisher in all but one meet in 2000, the loss of Brusewitz will hurt the team, but a stable of capable and improving runners look to pick up the slack. Leading the veterans will be senior co-captains Joe Herington, David Lance, and Matt Dunlavy all of whom return following a redshirt year in Herington, Lance, and Dunlavy all have been number one runners on the Golden Eagles in years past and the veteran leadership and talent they bring to the team will be important in its quest for a conference title. Sophomore Bo Erickson was a key contributor to last year s team as a freshman and earned all-conference honors. He will be counted upon to remain consistent and to be in thick of every competition. Another sophomore expected to contribute is Sal Graziano, who snuck into the top five Marquette runners at the Pre-NCAA meet last year. Adding depth are Luke Kunze, Kyrk Jordan, Adam Lindell and Jonathan Chenier, all who have top five experience with the team. A strong recruiting class that includes six freshmen will bring youthful energy to this veteran team. Jason Crichton and Duncan Lindquist head the group. Lindquist was a state champion in Utah in 1999 and Crichton was a top runner at the Canadian Junior Nationals. Coach Uhrich has high expectations for this team. This team on paper could be the best team here in 13 years, said Uhrich. We have 12 guys that are capable of being in our top five, veteran leadership, and some good young runners. I absolutely believe we can compete. A factor that could determine how the team develops is its performance during the early stages of the season. I think that we are real close to getting to that point (of competing in the NCAA championships), said Uhrich. They just need to do well in the first couple of meets to get the confidence they need to show that they are able to compete with anybody. 11 WOMEN S TRACK AND FIELD PREVIEW Coming off of last year s success, a bit of excitement surrounds the women s track and field team. While Marquette has lost a few key athletes from last season s squad, Head Coach Dave Uhrich and has staff have added a promising group of newcomers who should help fill the void while adding crucial depth. If we can have a conference meet like we did last year, we will finish in the top three, said Uhrich. A top-three finish is very possible. Last year, the Golden Eagles placed fourth in both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. As with the men, the addition of TCU and East Carolina adds more competition to an already talent-rich C-USA. In addition to TCU and ECU, Marquette expects to battle annual rivals Tulane, South Florida and Houston for the conference championship. The Golden Eagles will look to six veteran performers to carry much of the load. Junior Susan Barth, seniors Jennifer and Jeannette Batie, sophomore Brianna Dahm, junior Bethany Harry and senior Julie Sorrentino will lead this year s team. All six captured All-Conference recognition last season and Jennifer Batie, Sorrentino, Barth and Dahm set school records during last season. Our success will be based upon those individuals, said Uhrich. They have all finished in the top three at the Conference meet and three of them have been conference champs. We look for everyone to contribute, but they will lead us. In addition to having experienced success and possessing experience, the six also have the ability to win in two different events, giving the team six dangerous weapons. But while the veterans will have a significant responsibility placed on their collective shoulders, Uhrich believes that a solid group of freshmen will be called upon to make a significant contribution. If we are going to place in the top two or three in the conference, we need our freshmen, stated Uhrich. Really, the only event that we cannot place in is the high jump. We know this class can compete and perform in the conference. Crystal Andalcio-O Neil leads the freshman class. Andalcio- O Neil comes to the team from Trinidad where she was a top sprinter. Tiffany Bilderback, another freshman is an expected finalist in the 400 meters, one of the most hotly competitive events in the league. Rachel Kirvan, Beth Abramovich, Andrea Engelmann, Christina Le Donne and Jenny Pribyl round out the freshman group. With Crystal, we have someone who is capable for filling in for Fla-Tria (Horne), said assistant coach Jeff Hoskisson. The throws team has two competitors back who are expected to contribute. Sorrentino headlines the group and has the ability to score, and win, in three events. Crystal Larson will be called upon to step up and secure points for the team. With the addition of freshman Emily Leklem and Jodi Marsh, the throws team will have the depth needed to score points and compete. Senior Jessie Swan, coming off an injury and a red shirt year, has the talent, but needs to stay healthy. Sophomore Juliana Wesolowski had a year to adjust and is capable of being a finalist if things go right to her. The team is looking for all the right pieces to fall in the right places, when that happens, a top three finish at conference is very possible. This is probably one of the most well-rounded women s team we have had in quality and quantity, added Hoskisson. 11

13 The focus of the men s track and field team is always the Conference USA Championships. The season, however, the focus will be a little more challenging. The addition of TCU and Eastern Carolina promise to make the conference tougher as those two teams entering the conference own strong men s track and field programs. TCU missed a first-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships by one point last year and was a dropped baton away from a national indoor championship. Subsequently, the addition of two more teams means that more athletes are competing for the same amount of points. Our goal is to finish in the top four (in both conference meets), said head coach Dave Uhrich. In a conference like the one this has become, that is a good finish for us. Marquette s team has not changed much since last season. Last year s team was well rounded, but this year it has added depth that should allow the Golden Eagles to score more points. Marquette placed fifth in the conference indoor championship and sixth in the outdoor. I don t think any team can score points in every event, added Uhrich. We need to place high in more events, depth is nice to have, but we need scorers. We have never had a pole vaulter place in a conference meet and we have a couple of guys with a chance to do that this year. The events that we ve always had depth in middle distance and longer distance should continue to be solid. Those who will be looked upon to carry most of the load are the returning veterans. Seniors Luke Kunze and John Chenier, along with juniors Marek Krawczyk and Nic Wucherer, are expected to lead the team. The juniors and seniors, in order for us to do well at conference championships, need to perform well, said assistant coach Jeff Hoskisson. They have done it before and will be called upon to do it again this year. Those guys will need to score points the others need to score as well, everyone is capable we are counting on them. We will also look to the sophomores and freshman to score points. Sophomore Ryan Jacobson will be one of those sophomores who the coaches are looking upon to continue the success he enjoyed during his freshman year, including a second place finish in the 800 Meter at the outdoor conference meet. Krawczyk, the school record holder in the 400-meter indoor, and Wucherer, who established a school record in the 60-meter hurdles, lead a group of strong sprinters that could be the difference for Marquette in the conference championship. The 4x400 Relay is an event the team looks to make its presence felt, but will have to battle TCU whose relay team had been dominant. The incoming freshman class, said to be the most athletic group in years, will have to make some significant contributions and help carry some of the load. Our conference is so competitive that it is hard for the freshmen to compete, said Uhrich. We feel that we have recruited a class the can be competitive. I want them to know that we are confident in them to be competitive in the conference, no matter how difficult the competition. Coach Hoskisson added a compliment for the first-year class. If you look at them, most of them were two or three sport athletes in high school. Charles Mashozhera will be a welcome addition to the jumps team and could finish in the top four in both the triple and long jump at conference. Ryan McAbee has the potential and ability to score points in the pole vault. An area that was hurt by graduating seniors was the throws. Heath Roussel and Greg Uher, both top finishers at the conference meets, will leave large shoes to fill. The throws team will have less experience, but more depth. Sophomore Chris Schwandt, who had a strong freshman season, will be the leader of the group that will include four freshmen. Schwandt will be looked upon to score points in the conference meet and proved last year that he is very capable of doing so. The throws are especially difficult for the incoming freshmen, said Uhrich. Everything changes from their senior year in high school. You have heavier implements and new events. If their development comes along, they will help us, hopefully by the outdoor season. Look for the young throws team to get stronger and stronger over the next couple of years as the group gains confidence and experience. Coach (Jason) Stuke has recruited quality kids that he feels will be able to contribute, but it will be a developing year, added Hoskisson. The distance team added two freshmen to the mix and is still searching for the consistency needed to score points. In the past we have had one place in an event. In order to be competitive we need a couple of high places in every distance event to score more points, said Uhrich. 13
