6 Summary The NIRSA Salary Census tracks and summarizes salaries in the recreational sports profession. The data collection process was carefully managed through the NIRSA National Center to ensure accuracy and confidentiality. The Salary Census includes data summaries of 17 job titles, with 2,025 salaries reported. This report is the most powerful collection of salary data within the recreational sports industry. The data included in this report is intended to provide a reasonable range for typical monetary compensation, earned by the typical person working in that professional position. Please note that earning expectations stated at the beginning of each position are displayed in a range. The minimum stated is the 25th percentile, which means 25% of salaries reported for a particular position fall below this level. The maximum stated is the 75th percentile, which means that 25% of salaries reported for that job fall above that amount. What if a salary is higher or lower than the range? Not all salaries will fit within the range. Many external indicators may affect salaries, including: of years in current position of years in recreational sports profession Institution size Region CRSS designation Supervisory type Level of supervisory responsibility Educational background This report includes summaries by position of the averages for the above factors, so you will be able to identify the reasons why a particular salary may vary outside of the typical range. Other factors affecting salaries may be: Institutional limitations through pay grades and scales Institutions pay lower base salaries, but higher benefits Greater/lesser job responsibilities Greater/lesser amount of time expected to fulfill job responsibilities Work performance Other Also, institutions human resource policies and procedures vary widely. If a position s current compensation is outside of the normal range, it may be possible that it is over- or under-paid; however, you should assess the other factors before seeking a salary adjustment. 5
