4 Excellence 4 Pius X History Opened on October 1, 56, by Bishop Louis B. Kucera, Pius X High School was established as the central Catholic high school for the city of Lincoln and the Diocese of Lincoln. Since its earliest years, Pius X has grown to more than 1,200 students in grades 9-12, with more than 0 faculty and staff made up of both religious and lay people. When the school was named after Pope St. Pius X, it took its patron s motto, To Restore All Things in Christ, as its guiding mission. This mission is evident in the academic opportunities and the variety of activities (clubs, athletics, and organizations) offered to students. The Birth of the 'BOLT By Msgr. Ivan Vap Since I am the sole survivor of the foursome that was responsible for the naming of the Pius X identifying mascot, The Thunderbolts, I feel it necessary to put into writing that which I have shared over the years, but only verbally. This happened early in September of 56. The football team had already unanimously accepted the colors for this new school on East A Street in Lincoln. Green, Gold and White and not just any green, it was Forest green these identifying colors would adorn the athletic uniforms as well as band and academic teams. Early on it was evident that the school construction would not allow beginning the new school year at the regularly appointed date. A decision was made by the administration that the official opening date (with only partial use of the building) would be October 1 of that year. The football team was revving up for the new school, the new field and some new opponents. Coach Aldrich had wisely not scheduled an opponent for the opening Friday. On that particular Friday, Father Dan Kealy, Coach Aldrich, Bill Inbody (volunteer coach) and I headed to Columbus to scout the St. Bonaventure (now Scotus High) team since they were on the schedule for the new football field. As we headed to the north-west it was very evident that we were in for a late summer/early fall thunderstorm with clouds beginning to grow to darken the sky. Our school still had not been given a proper nickname or mascot. Every creature under the sea, on the land or in the air was proposed by faculty, pep club officers, athletes and the general public. None had seemed appropriate for Pius X High School, so the search continued and that was the subject of our conversation in the car as we headed into what was surely to be a rainy evening. Father Kealy was an accomplished pilot, among his many other abilities. I was in the process of working toward a pilot license and was in the ground school meteorological portion of those studies, so the turn of conversation to that stormy sky was just a normal thing to do. Father Kealy talked about the tremendous force of nature that was in a thunderhead, rising thousands of feet into the sky. All of a sudden all of us in the car focused in on a force of nature to properly let everybody know the force of the student body of this new school. No, not thunderhead, that just did not sound right but, THUNDERBOLT that had a great sound to it. And then the student newspaper could be THE FORECASTER, the annual THE THUNDERER, other aspects of the school life could carry through the theme from there. True to our expectations we did spend the evening in the bleachers as the rain came down, not with a vengeance as in a thunderstorm, but just enough to get us well soaked. We returned to Lincoln, coach Aldrich and Bill Inbody were all wrapped up in the coming game the next Friday. I returned to my residence, went directly to the bookshelf and found my copy of Webster s Collegiate Dictionary. I thumbed through the pages until I came to page 41 to find the word Thunderbolt. The first definition was A single discharge of lightning with accompanying thunder. What a great way to depict the Thunderbolts that bolt of lightning! And then came the clincher: A person or thing likened to lightning in suddenness, effectiveness, and destructive power. What more could we possibly want? I immediately phoned Fr. Kealy, read him the above, he in turn called coach Aldrich -- and the next day it was official we were to be the Thunderbolts! That first football team was the first to endorse the selection and that first game the public learned of our decision, the rest is history -- and a very good history to be sure. P.S. The first game was broadcast over KFOR by Dick Perry. During the first half he referred to our team as the pea-ous ex thunderbolts. By half time a number of people had called the station and asked that he be informed of the proper rendering of the name and from that moment we became the Pius Tenth Thunderbolts. Of course, it wasn t long before the headlines referred to us as the BOLTS! By the way, the Bolts beat Syracuse by a score of 20 to 6 the next Friday. And, evidently the scouting was a success; we beat St. Bonaventure later in the year, 21 to 13. Summer Camps At Pius X

Like us on Facebook at Pius X Teachers Receives Strong Support through Give To Lincoln Day - submitted by Deb Hoge - Alumni, parents, and friends showed strong support for Pius X teachers during Give To Lincoln Day 2015 on May 28th, a one-day philanthropic event. Give To Lincoln Day, sponsored by the Lincoln Community Foundation, raised more than $3.26 million dollars for non-profit organizations in Lincoln and Lancaster County. The funds raised by the Pius X Foundation will be used to retain and recruit high quality teachers. Pius X is working to ensure that teacher salaries are competitive by bringing salaries to 90% (aggregate) of Lincoln Public Schools. The Pius X Foundation ended the day placing first on the leader board for both the largest number of online donors as well as the highest dollar amount raised online. In total, Pius X raised more than $250,000. This included online and offline gifts ($135,000), as well as $5,000 in matching gifts from an anonymous donor ($5,000) and the Bishop Flavin Fund/Joy of the Gospel Campaign ($0,000). Qualifying donations helped Pius X claim a share of matching challenge funds sponsored by the Lincoln Community Foundation and the Give To Lincoln Day sponsors (nearly $13,000). "I am so grateful for all of the support Pius X received on Give To Lincoln Day and would like to extend my thanks to the Lincoln Community Foundation and their sponsors for making this day possible," commented Fr. Jim Meysenburg, Pius X's Chief Administrative Officer. "Pius X and its students are blessed to have an amazing group of teachers, and I am excited to be able to continue working toward the goal of increasing salaries. I am committed to ensuring that our teachers are fairly compensated for their work and their dedication." Pius X is still accepting donations to support Pius X and its faculty. Checks can be made out and sent to the Pius X Foundation, Attn: Give to Lincoln Day, 6000 A St., Lincoln, NE, 685. Safe and secure donations can also be made online at (click Donate Now button).

Remember to call on the Pius X Food Service Program for any needs for food, whether it is a dessert or full meal, for a sport, club, activity, banquet, or event. Contact Tini Van-Oehlertz, R.D. Stop the Cravings! Eat Right! The kids are asleep and you have a great movie lined up to watch. The craving hits: Chocolate. Now. Does it matter that you ve stuck to healthy eating all week? No. Chocolate! Or that you haven t consumed chocolate in weeks? Chocolate! Chocolate! The craving grows stronger every second. Resistance is futile, and soon you re digging around a cupboard for the bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips you bought for baking emergencies. Soon after, competing feelings of relief, guilt and remorse begin to swirl around your mind. Crisis averted or was it Pandora s box opened? Some dieters may believe a craving an intense desire for a certain food is a signal their bodies need the nutrients that food provides. A craving for chocolate, for example, would signal a physiologic need for more antioxidants. However, a bowl of red beans, which is higher in antioxidants than chocolate, would better meet that supposed physiological need: yet beans are low on the craving scale. What happens when your cravings become overwhelming and lead to overindulgence and feelings of guilt? When people follow overly restrictive diets or completely cut out groups of foods, cravings can become more intense and can lead to a vicious cycle of indulging, overeating and guilt. A diet that allows small amounts of foods you enjoy even high-fat, high-calorie foods will be easier to maintain since you not eliminating that food outright from your life. If you sometimes crave chocolate, keep some dark chocolate on hand. Dark Chocolate contains phytochemicals that may aid in the prevention of heart disease and may decrease the effects of sugar on your teeth. But enjoy it in moderation. Calories do add up. When looking for dark chocolate, read the label to make sure that cacao is the first ingredient on the list rather than sugar. Here are other tips for handling food cravings. Put your cravings off. Tell yourself you ll deal with the craving in 20 minutes. Food cravings are typically short-lived, and while the desire for chips, chocolate or cake feels overwhelming now, it will wane, especially if you can find a healthier food substitute or distract yourself. Choose alternatives for your cravings. Yearn for potato chips? Buy a brand that s low-fat or fat-free. Desire something crunchy? Skip the chips: try fruit or a salad packed with crisp greens and veggies. Want something sweet? How about baking an apple or roasting some veggies? Roasting brings out the sweetness in many foods. Buy single service items you crave. Instead of buying a whole box of cookies, says Thayer, buy just one cookie from a specialty bakeshop. Schedule your snacks. Plan for nutritious snacks to prevent between-meal hunger. Keep portable, healthy snacks in your desk, back pack or car. Take a walk, work on a hobby or call a friend. Thayer points out that what you really may be craving is social support. A chat with a sympathetic friend can get you through a tough craving. Keep a craving journal. Note the time of day your craving appeared, how long it lasted, the food you craved and how you handled the situation. Thayer says you ll start noticing patterns so you can be better prepared to handle cravings in the future. Source: Academy of Nutrition/Dietetics
