1 Eagle Eye March 2013 Volume 7, Issue 6 HUDSON S BAY HIGH SCHOOL March Eagle News 1601 E. McLoughlin Blvd. Vancouver, WA MAIN OFFICE: Principal s Note: Hello, Eagles! HUDSON'S BAY HIGH SCHOOL The Eagle Eye Snapshots of Bay: Teacher Evaluation Changes Washington State is currently changing the evaluation process for teachers and principals. In our district, we will be using the University of Washington s 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning as the framework for the teacher evaluation. Fortunately, Bay teachers are accustomed to this framework as we have been using their learning walk protocol for three years. This process gives every teacher an opportunity to visit a couple of other classrooms and observe a peer in action. As a staff, we then talk about what we noticed and what we are wondering in order to improve teaching and learning. Spring Sports Monday, February 25, is the first day of the spring sports season. This usually means that we will have a couple of days of sunny weather and 60 degree temperatures before it is raining sideways and down to 40 degrees for the first week of practice. The spring season is my favorite time of year and a chance to go watch soccer, track, baseball and softball on the same afternoon. Our golf team will also be in action this spring, where we have already qualified one athlete for state. Freshmen Academy Next year, Bay will be targeting some incoming ninth-graders to place them in a three-period academy. During this time, they will have their science, English and Next Tools classes, while also receiving some one on one and small group instruction. The purpose of this academy is to provide a smoother transition from middle school and to improve their study skills and habits of mind in the process. Thank you for sending your student to Hudson s Bay and I look forward to seeing you soon! 2 Embracing OUR Culture KONA PEHLKE-Student Where is your family from? Liberia, West Africa How long has your family been in the United States? 15 years What are some of your favorite cultural specific foods? The African people are all about food and getting together. African parties consist of tables and tables of all types of African food and drinks. My favorites are collard greens and FuFu, which comes from the root of Casua, and peanut soup. Are there any cultural traditions that you celebrate and really enjoy? Liberian Independence Day. It falls on July 26 th. Any thing else you would like to add? I haven t been back to Liberia since me and my siblings were adopted but I plan to go back after I graduate, or later in life. What do you like most about your culture? I love the Liberian culture because it is a very friendly culture and in Liberia everyone knows each other in the towns and different villages. The term it takes a village to raise a child is so true in Liberia. If a child misbehaves and your parents aren t home to punish you, your neighbors will, with or without your parent s consent. TONY JACOBS-District Resource Officer Where is your family from? Originally, my family is from Sierra Leone. My mom s family is from Texas and my dad s family is from Louisiana. How long has your family been in the United States? My family has been here since the early 1800 s. I have 5 brothers and 4 sisters. I am the youngest son. What are some of your favorite cultural specific foods? Fried chicken, macaroni, potato salad, catfish, Home made cornbread and sweet potato pie. Are there any cultural traditions that you celebrate and really enjoy? We celebrate Juneteenth day, June 19 th, which is the day the slaves were freed. It is mainly celebrated in the South. Are there any unique cultural experiences that you would like to share? On New Year s Day, people in the South eat black-eyed peas. It has been considered good luck for at least 1,500 years. It shows humility and a lack of vanity. Eat poor on New Year s and eat fat the rest of the year. Any thing else you would like to add? Since the 60 s, my older brothers and sisters have always enjoyed singing the Motown sound. So during the holidays we have made it a tradition that when we all get together, we sing. It is usually known as Showtime at the Jacobs. What do you like most about your culture? It s an opportunity to show pride in our African heritage and the many amazing contributions we have made in the world. THE EAGLE EYE Page 2

Both were also regional winners in their respective weight classes. In conjunction with Mat Classic s 25th anniversary, Hudson s Bay Associate Principal and Athletic Director Stoney Myers, along with other former state champs, was recognized for his triumph at the inaugural tournament in Then a Hudson s Bay junior, Myers maintained a 33-0 winning streak to claim victory. Hudson s Bay wrestling head coach Albert Alcantar was also honored recently with the Region III Coach of the Year award from the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association. A 1986 high school state wrestling champion and Portland State wrestler, Alcantar is currently a learning support teacher at Hudson s Bay. After 20 seasons coaching the school s wrestlers and many hours spent raising funds for the wrestling program, Alcantar is very deserving of this honor, said Myers. He s a great coach.
