ANNUAL REPORT 2017

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It recently came to my attention that Titan Baseball has a two-word motto they live by on the diamond, in the classroom, and, this past year, on their 18th trip to the College World Series. It s a simple saying one that not only personifies the attitude of this team, but also the faculty, staff, students and alumni they represent every time they put on the blue and orange: Next pitch. Like Reach Higher, those two little words say so much about who we are and how we elevate past the adversity that comes with being an underfunded institution serving more than 40,000 diverse students, the majority of whom are the first in their family to attend college. In this, our 60th anniversary as a beacon for hope and opportunity in Orange County, we continue to move forward not by dwelling on failure, resting on laurels, or fearing new obstacles, but by preparing for, focusing on, and dedicating ourselves to the next opportunity at greatness. Indeed, the very nature of our work as educators is grounded in the idea that the next pitch may be the one we hit out of the park, thereby changing a student s life, transforming a family legacy, or revolutionizing the world we live in. The pages of this report encapsulate that spirit and the many benevolent donors who make it possible from our newly developed Food and Housing Security Task Force and the Applied Security Analysis Program to the BOLD Scholars and yes, Titan Baseball. And just as the student-athletes on that team know that the next pitch represents infinite possibilities on the long road back to Omaha, our campus community knows that the next partnership, initiative, or program aimed at student success is crucial in our ascension toward becoming the model public comprehensive university of the nation. Sincerely, Mildred García President

A YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS AT A GLANCE / State of the University HONOR ROLL OF GIVING Individual Giving Corporations, Foundations and Organizations Grants and Contracts The Ontiveros Legacy Society This annual report celebrates the University s events, programs, people and progress during the fiscal year ending June 30, In these pages, we also honor Cal State Fullerton s many supporters, who are integral to the institution s past success and promising future. ANNUAL REPORT

A YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS GIFTS TO CSUF SURPASS $21 MILLION For the first time, Cal State Fullerton recorded back-to-back years of more than $21 million in fundraising commitments, with more than $21.5 million for the fiscal year ending The University also had the highest number of individual and alumni donors yet another measure of CSUF s fundraising success. Cal State Fullerton s culture of supporting student progress extends to its philanthropic efforts, as students, alumni, faculty and staff are the everyday catalysts of our continued success, said Greg Saks, vice president for university advancement. Our learning outcomes, improved graduation rates and stellar record of commitment to our students lay the foundation for our donors belief in our investment-worthiness. In addition, the CSUF endowment has grown by more than $27 million over the last six years to $61,233,989. This is primarily due to new donated funds to the pool, as well as market returns. TSU BECOMES CAMPUS LIVING ROOM The Titan Student Union unveiled roughly 27,000 square feet of added space with new seating areas, floor-to-ceiling windows, glass-enclosed meeting rooms and a grand staircase. Built in 1976 for a much smaller student body, the TSU was dubbed our campus living room by President García at its October 2016 ribbon-cutting. The goal was to not only add much needed public-use space, but also to create a space that would be fun and lively for students and other campus members to enjoy and use, said Carol McDoniel, TSU director of administration. 4

ON-CAMPUS NEWS BUREAU FOR UNIVISION In November 2016, the College of Communications and Univision Los Angeles partnered to create a news bureau serving the Orange County and Inland Empire Hispanic community. The unique partnership between industry and education provides CSUF students internship opportunities with seasoned bilingual journalists. The alliance, along with a $150,000 gift from Univision, is a continuation of efforts by the University s Latino Communications Institute to boost students career development in the competitive multicultural media job market. Heading the news bureau is reporter and anchor Francisco Ugalde (below center, with Luis Patiño, president of Univision Los Angeles, right) who, with other Univision media professionals, are mentoring the next generation of journalists. CSUF BOOSTS ECONOMY BY $2.26 BILLION An economic impact analysis conducted by international consulting firm ICF determined that Cal State Fullerton is a major driver of economic activity statewide. It powers $2.26 billion in economic activity, supports more than 15,000 jobs and generates $126 million in local and state tax revenue. The bulk of that impact is felt in Orange and Los Angeles counties. In addition, CSUF returns $13.40 to California s economy for every dollar invested by the state. Approximately 44 percent of the University s annual operating budget is allocated by the California State University system and funded each year by the California Legislature and governor. The data also show that Titan alumni spur an estimated $4.3 billion in annual spending attributable to their CSUF degree, which supports nearly 25,000 jobs and results in an additional $245 million in state and local tax revenue due to this incremental earning power. Not only are we shaping tomorrow s workforce and driving the long-term development of this region and the state as a whole, but our presence as an intellectual and cultural center itself is powering significant economic activity, said President García. And the ongoing impact of our diverse alumni, whose lives have been transformed by a CSUF degree, is nothing short of amazing. ANNUAL REPORT

A YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS RECOGNIZING THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF EDUCATION During her fifth Cal State Fullerton Convocation address in August 2016, President Mildred García kicked off a new academic year by welcoming 52 new tenure-track faculty members and praising faculty, staff and administrators for helping to boost graduation rates, foster diversity and inclusion, and advance the University s strategic plan. She applauded the work of the Student Success Teams one in each college, one at the Irvine campus and one dedicated to special populations for helping students thrive, and shared the increase in six-year graduation rates over four years, from 51 percent in 2012 to 62 percent in The opportunity gap between underrepresented students and their Caucasian peers is closing, García pointed out. In 2012, the gap for first-time freshmen hovered at 13 percent; in 2016, it had decreased to 6.4 percent. For transfer students, the gap in 2012 was 5 percent. By 2016, it had been eliminated for the first time in University history. Education has the transformative power to help students achieve their dreams, García said. Let s keep reaching higher. TOP AWARDS AT CSUPERB Cal State Fullerton science students won top awards in January 2017 from the California State University s Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB) for their research projects on understanding how plants fight viruses and how parasites affect humans, as well as for outstanding student teaching. The 29th annual event received abstract submissions from faculty-led labs at 22 CSU campuses. CSUF award winners included biology graduate students Noopur Dave (Don Eden Graduate Student Research Award) and David Hsu (Crellin Pauling Student Teaching Award), and biological science major Carina Sandoval (above, Glenn Nagel Undergraduate Research Award). 6

CENTER FOR ORAL AND PUBLIC HISTORY NAMED FOR FOUNDING TITAN The University s Center for Oral and Public History is now named for a founding faculty member, professor emeritus of history and author of The Fullerton Way: Fifty Years at California State University, Fullerton. The naming of the Lawrence de Graaf Center for Oral and Public History, in appreciation of gifts and pledges totaling $1 million from de Graaf and his late wife, Shirley, recognizes Dr. de Graaf s exemplary leadership of the History Department and service to the University, including the creation of the oral history program, said Sheryl Fontaine, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. With his generous gift, the center will continue to record and preserve the history of Orange County and Cal State Fullerton, train students to create oral histories, and make that history available to local, national and international communities for generations to come, she added. A LEADER IN HIGHER EDUCATION In February 2017, President García and other members of the board of directors of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities met with U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to discuss how the Department of Education can work with public universities to increase access and affordability, boost degree completion, improve accountability, and better prepare students to succeed in the workforce. García serves as secretary of the Council of Presidents for the organization. President García again met with Secretary DeVos in April to discuss education policy, year-round Pell Grant availability, Cal State Fullerton s success in improving graduation rates, and preparing students for the workforce and graduate school. She also was honored with the 2017 American Council on Education s Reginald Wilson Diversity Leadership Award, presented to an individual who has demonstrated sustained commitment to diversity in higher education. García, who received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Pepperdine University in May, begins her service as the next chair of the board of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in ANNUAL REPORT

A YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS BENEFITING ABREGO FUTURE SCHOLARS The start of 2017 saw the Abrego Future Scholars program reach its five-year goal of $1 million in under two years. Actor and businessperson Eva Longoria (above, with President García) and her husband, José Bastón, president of Televisa International, helped Cal State Fullerton meet this goal during a January fundraiser in Los Angeles. In April, President García and Mario Cuevas Zamora, consul of Mexico, celebrated a donation from the Consulate of Mexico in Santa Ana that supports the scholarship program named after Silas H. Abrego, CSUF vice president emeritus for student affairs and a California State University trustee. The donation was matched by the University so scholars would receive additional funds. The Abrego Future Scholars also benefited from more than $200,000 raised at the 30th annual Hispanic Scholarship Golf Tournament, presented by American Honda Motor Co. The tournament has raised more than $1 million in three decades, supporting more than 800 scholars since its inception. CAREER AWARD FOR PHYSICIST Associate professor of physics Geoffrey Lovelace (above) received the National Science Foundation s CAREER award for his simulations modeling cataclysmic events in the universe. A theorist specializing in numerical relativity, Lovelace is part of the CSUF faculty-student science team that contributed to the breakthrough discovery of gravitational waves announced in February He is expected to receive a total of $400,000 for his five-year project, CAREER: Computational Gravitational-Wave Science and Education in the Era of First Observations. 12 A YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS MATT BROWN STEVE WOLTMANN MAKING WAVES AT BIG WEST Seven Titan Athletics programs made their mark at the Big West Conference for the first time in CSUF history: baseball, men s track and field, softball, men s basketball, women s tennis, men s soccer and women s soccer. Men s track and field won the Big West Championship for the first time, while the baseball team advanced to the College World Series for the 18th time. Another historic performance came from golfer Martina Edberg (above), the first Titan to advance to the NCAA Women s golf championship as an individual. This was the first time that Titan Athletics raised more than $2 million in a fiscal year, including funding that allowed the women s softball program to compete in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. TOP SPOT IN GEOWALL COMPETITION CSUF student civil engineers clinched first place in the 2017 GeoWall competition at the Geotechnical Frontiers conference the third time a CSUF team has won the national championship. For their win, team members Eric Kim, John Stapleton, Samantha Bahena and Jesse Solis designed and constructed a miniature retaining wall, a support for such uses as bridge abutments, and earned the highest score with no penalties. Titan teams previously won back-to-back national GeoWall championships in 2014 and This competition allows students to apply what they learn in the classroom to develop a practical and competitive design in a hands-on environment, noted Beena Ajmera (M.S. civil engineering, B.S. civil engineering and B.A. mathematics-applied mathematics), assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering and a past participant of the competition. 12

SPIRITS ARE HIGH AT COMMENCEMENT A crowd of almost 70,000 gathered at Cal State Fullerton in May to celebrate the 2017 commencement ceremonies, where thousands of graduates and candidates for graduation proudly donned their caps and gowns. It is indeed a wonderful celebration, one that I suspect began last night, ran into the wee hours of the morning and will likely continue through the weekend, President García told the audience. But that s okay, graduates, you earned it, and per tradition, some of you are even boasting about your achievements with messages on the back of your graduation caps. I saw one that said, Nevertheless, she persisted, another that said, I can t believe we all wore the same thing, and one that proudly read, Primera generación! Screenwriter and playwright Linda Woolverton 79 (M.A. theatre arts), who gained fame for such screenplays as Maleficent, was the May 20 commencement speaker. When asked by Disney to create a new heroine for Beauty and the Beast, she and lyricist Howard Ashman decided to create a proactive, intelligent, thinking, reading heroine one who led with her brains, not her looks. I got a lot of pushback for that, she said. After all, I was up against 50 years of tradition entrenched in princesses. But Howard and I pushed back and created a heroine we could believe in. Graduates, you, too, can change the tapestry of your life, if you re fearless and creative enough. Fly. Draw a crowd. I ll be watching. On May 21, commencement speaker Bill Ruh 83, 84 (B.S., M.S. computer science), General Electric Digital s chief executive officer and senior vice president and chief digital officer for GE, offered graduates five principles that he has used over the years: develop a career strategy; keep learning and seeking out opportunities; develop relationships; be a great communicator; and pick your boss, not your job. Finally, be bold. Write down your list, then make it happen, Ruh shared. ANNUAL REPORT

SHAPING THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE In spring 2017, a team of Cal State Fullerton computer science students developed TitanPark, an app that offers real-time parking updates for commuters driving into campus. The app was the students entry in the GE/California State University (CSU) Innovation Design Challenge, where teams from CSUF and six other CSU campuses created state-of-the-art projects for the Industrial Internet built on GE s Predix software platform. The College of Engineering and Computer Science and GE Digital partnered for a second year to offer the competition. GE Digital also awarded CSUF $450,000 in funding over three years to support the design challenge. As they develop their projects, students receive online training on the Predix platform, as well as feedback from GE engineers. GE Digital is one of a growing number of partners lending their support to project-based learning experiences in this college. Such partnerships allow students to create solutions to real-world challenges facing local companies. In addition, industry partners offer invaluable mentorship to students and have access to a recruitment pipeline of talented future hires. The College of Engineering and Computer Science s Corporate Partners Program creates opportunities for the development of professional-practice industry projects, sponsored by a company through an educational grant. Projects such as the GE/CSU Innovation Design Challenge open doors for immersive, hands-on learning experiences. The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Undergraduate Research Gift Challenge, now in its second year, seeks to raise $100,000 for opportunities for students to engage in scientific inquiry. Physics alumnus Dan Black 67 and his wife, Kathy, launched the original challenge in with $50,000, which was matched through gifts from other University donors. Such investments help prepare Cal State Fullerton students for the challenges of advanced scientific study and shape workforceready scientists, mathematicians and other professionals. 20 HONOR ROLL OF GIVING MATT BROWN ROOTING FOR THE HOME TEAM Since the informal creation of a bat-and-ball club in 1961, baseball at Cal State Fullerton has been synonymous with Titan pride. Great players and top coaches notwithstanding, much of the success of this NCAA Division I college team lies in its ardent fans, who keep the team aiming high and focused on national competitiveness. Titan Baseball fans, alumni or not, are able to give directly to the baseball program and support everything from facelifts for the locker room and the bull pen to special training equipment and the team s nutrition program. Funding also allows its coaches to enhance recruiting efforts and find Titan-sized talent for a team that has won four national championships and has been to the College World Series 18 times. Roger Kotch 81 (B.A. business administration-accounting), CFO of In-N-Out Burger, has been a steadfast supporter of Titan Athletics for years, especially Titan Baseball. One of the great joys for my family and me is attending Titan Baseball games, both at home and on the road, said Kotch. Baseball is such a fundamental part of the fabric of Cal State Fullerton. I can t think of a program that better exemplifies Titan spirit and hard work. Knowing that we are helping to develop young men both on the field and in the classroom, while celebrating one of the University and community s most honored programs, gives me such joy. It is a great way to give back to my alma mater and a great source of pride and fulfillment for my family and me, he added. Titan Baseball s annual kick-off fundraiser, Dinner With the Titans, allows donors and fans the opportunity to meet current and former members of the team, including many Major League players who return to thank their college team. Among these are L.A. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner and MLB All-Star and Golden Spikes Award winner Phil Nevin. On the docket is a capital project to enhance the baseball and softball complex. Titan Baseball also hopes to create endowments to name some of its facilities while continuing a solid legacy one that already spans several generations for the nationally renowned program. To make a gift to the baseball program or to Titan Athletics, contact Greg Paules, associate athletic director of development, at or gpaules@fullerton.edu. 20

BANKING ON HANDS-ON LEARNING For those who hope to one day become money managers, securities analysts and investors, there is no more hands-on experience than making actual decisions that can cause a portfolio s value to increase or drop. The research, scanning of stock data and market news, and development of fund analyses are preparation to buy, sell and trade not in a simulation, but in the real world. It s just such experiences that business students get as members of Cal State Fullerton s student investment teams in the Applied Security Analysis Program (ASAP), where they manage approximately $1.3 million in stocks and bonds. ASAP participants are selected via a rigorous application process that includes the development and defense of a research report for a designated company. Once selected, students experience an enriched curriculum, including economic forecasting, security analysis, portfolio construction and performance attribution, explained Marcia Clark, who oversees the bond portion of the program. At each step along the way, ASAP board members, drawn from the local investment community, provide support and assistance to help the students refine their investment decision-making process. This program has leveled the playing field for our students, agreed fellow ASAP director Mike Milligan. It s a great learning experience to work in that kind of atmosphere. The program was made possible with an initial gift by Jeffrey Van Harte 80 (B.A. business administration-finance), chair and chief investment officer of Jackson Square Partners. In 2016 his continued support allowed the program to open the Titan Capital Management Center, a state-of-the art facility that mirrors the real world of an investment management operation. We have created a very high-impact, relevant program that is only going to get better in the years to come, said Van Harte. Leaders in finance and investment management should be very excited about the quality of the students that are coming out of this program. I know, because I hired one of the students myself. To contribute to the Applied Security Analysis Program, contact Enrique Gonzalez, senior director of development for Mihaylo College of Business and Economics, at or egonzalez-salgado@fullerton.edu. 22 HONOR ROLL OF GIVING TRAINING FUTURE EDUCATORS Research, clinical service and community involvement are at the forefront of the CSUF Center for Autism, one of eight College of Education centers providing University students with opportunities to engage in immersive learning experiences. The center consists of the Applied Development Core, housed in the College of Health and Human Development, and the Education Core in the College of Education. Interfacing with community partners and CSUF faculty, students work as center associates in a variety of real-world environments that prepare them for future roles and responsibilities, said Erica Howell, co-director of the center and associate professor of special education. Our students assist in programs for children and adults on the autism spectrum and gain experience presenting and publishing in scholarly forums, she added. Most of the center associates are heading into fields where they plan to serve individuals with autism, and the center provides hands-on opportunities to develop skills and understanding of this population so they are more effective professionals. Long a standard of excellence in California s teacher preparation programs, Cal State Fullerton s College of Education trains future educators to meet the needs and expectations of our communities. Teacher preparation includes teaching, instructional design, school administration and community college leadership, as well as engaging in partnerships with local school districts and community organizations. One of these organizations, the McCoy Rigby Conservatory of the Arts, has partnered with the Center for Autism to create the No Limits program, which offers creative classes including dance, musical theater and tumbling for children with special needs. Through the program, said Howell, Cal State Fullerton students work as teaching assistants, supporting the lead teacher and peer mentors in facilitating positive behaviors and appropriate social skills, and increasing communication with individuals with disabilities. Philanthropic support allows for the continuation of such programs, reinforcing the University s reputation for rigorous, research-based practice. To contribute to the CSUF Center for Autism or the College of Education, contact Cris Powell, director of development for the College of Education and the Division of Student Affairs, at or cpowell@fullerton.edu. 22

CREATING A SAFETY NET FOR STUDENTS While students may face obstacles on their path to a college degree, lacking food or shelter shouldn t be one of them. It is this belief that spurred Cal State Fullerton s Division of Student Affairs to launch a Food and Housing Security Task Force to address the issues on campus. In its first year, the task force initiated several projects, including a temporary housing assistance program, a donated meals campaign, a campuswide hygiene drive, an online notification system that informs students where to find free or donated food on campus, and a career closet to provide professional attire for students in need. Providing basic needs support, particularly in the form of housing and food, reduces distress that tax students coping skills and could seriously derail them from achieving their dreams, said Carmen Curiel, associate dean of students. Aramark and Campus Dining Services have joined the University s efforts, donating meals and allowances for food at the Gastronome and other campus eateries. Individual donors also stepped up, making gifts to a new Student Assistance Fund for Emergencies (SAFE). The fund supports students facing personal emergencies or catastrophes, as well as the development of sustainable programs that address barriers to graduation. In 2016, the California State University Chancellor s Office reported that approximately 21 to 24 percent of students across its 23 campuses lack regular access to food, and 8 to 12 percent lack stable housing. We are actively putting in place support services that identify and immediately serve some of CSUF s most at-risk students, which include our displaced students, food-insecure students and students experiencing an emergency situation or crisis, said Tonantzin Oseguera, associate vice president for student affairs. We recognize that every student s situation is unique, and we are committed to examining some of those root causes, as well as providing stopgap resources to get them through each semester, she added. Together with our campus partners and donors, we can provide effective services for our most vulnerable students. 24 HONOR ROLL OF GIVING DEVELOPING WOMEN LEADERSHIP An innovative women s leadership initiative is giving a group of Cal State Fullerton students the opportunity to leverage its strengths and promote social change and inclusion. Cal State Fullerton was one of four campuses in the nation chosen to participate in the BOLD Women s Leadership Network, which supports female cohorts at the junior class level through scholarships and mentoring to help them develop leadership skills and transform themselves and their communities. The other institutions participating are Millbury College in Vermont, Smith College in Massachusetts and Rutgers University in New Jersey. The program is led by female university presidents who have demonstrated a commitment to collaboration, innovation, diversity and inclusion. The nearly $1.3 million award is funded by the Pussycat Foundation, which was established by the late Helen Gurley Brown, the longtime editor of Cosmopolitan magazine. BOLD scholars are chosen because they exhibit exceptional leadership abilities, critical thinking skills, a passion for social equity and the ability to facilitate challenging discourse, said Mary Ann Villarreal, assistant vice president for strategic initiatives. BOLD scholars are dynamic, courageous and thoughtful student leaders who aim to make an impact on this campus, in their community and the world. The University s first class of BOLD Scholars each receive a $25,000 scholarship for two years to cover tuition fees, room and board. Upon graduation, each scholar is eligible to apply for a Helen Gurley Brown Fellowship to fund employment at an organization that embodies BOLD s values. I knew I wanted to focus on health care and social justice issues, said health science and sociology major Iman Roberts. My goal is to continue to grad school and earn a doctorate. What makes the BOLD Scholars program so valuable is that it provides a support system and is dedicated to our personal and professional growth. They focus on change and how we can make our voices heard. Each BOLD cohort meets weekly with a designated faculty mentor and is responsible for developing a transformational project. The mentor and student group can each apply for a $10,000 award to pursue their project goals. An additional $10,000 is earmarked for Bridge-Up Scholars, a program to build engagement with first-year freshmen. Current BOLD scholars will mentor these younger students. To learn more about establishing an endowment fund at Cal State Fullerton, contact Michele Cesca, associate vice president for development, at or mcesca@fullerton.edu. 24
