CPO#14IC UNC Asheville, One University Heights Ashcvillc, North Carolina S503 F 8?8?5!-6759 Dear Ms. Lemmon: In order to better function in our current fiscal and administrative environment the University has identified the need to consolidate the functions of the Asheville Graduate Center (AGC) and the Office of Sponsored Scholarship and Programs into one position. In order to facilitate the consolidation of these two functional areas we seek approval to encompass these changes under the administrative leadership of one position with a title of Director of the Asheville Graduate Center. This reorganization will allow us to reduce the number of senior academic administrative positions, to enhance our budgetary efficiency, and to reorgani/e our administrative structure for increased management effectiveness. The overall duties of this position are still consistent with the defined definitions of an SAAO Tier II position. The Director of the Asheville Graduate Center will direct all operations of the Center and its programming, including Distance Education, Continuing Education, and graduate programs from UNC-system institutions that are hosted on UNC Asheville's campus. In addition, the Director provides administrative and budget support to the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) Program, UNC Asheville's interdisciplinary graduate program, and works with the faeulty Director of the MLA Program to ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, and operational management of the currieular offerings. The Director will also oversee Sponsored Scholarship and Programs, assisting faculty in identifying grant opportunities and navigating the grant application process. The Director supervises the work of the Director of Distance Education, the University Program Specialist who directs Continuing Education, two part-time employees who support Sponsored Scholarship and Programs activity, and a University Program Associate, who provides administrative assistance to the unit. The Director of the Asheville Graduate Center reports to the Associate ProvosV and Dean of University Programs, in Academic Affairs. The Director of the AGC supervises the Director of Distance Education, the Coordinator of Continuing Education, and the Program Assistant for the Center; in addition, the Director also supervises temporary and student employees as appropriate. The Director also manages AGC budgets and has approval authority over distance and continuing education budgets. Working with faculty and administrative constituencies from UNC Asheville and other higher education institutions, the Director identifies potential graduate, distance, and continuing education opportunities; the Director also works with local and regional community groups to identify areas of program need, which the Center can effectively serve. The director teaches up to one course per semester in a field of his or her expertise, including but not limited to

4 the MLA Program. The Director also supervises sponsored scholarship and programs for the University, assisting faculty with the grant application process and identifying grant opportunities. Supervisory Responsibility: The Director supervises the Director of Distance Education, the Coordinator of Continuing Education, and a Program Assistant. In addition, the Director supervises a ¾ lecturer who oversees the Great Smokies Writing Program, which is one of the Distance Education programs; and temporary and student employees as appropriate. The Director also supervises two part time employees in Sponsored Scholarship and Programs. FLSA: Minimum qualifications (education/experience/skills): Preferred education/experience/skills: Knowledge, skills and abilities required (Functional Competencies): Exempt This position requires possession of post baccalaureate credentials and/or equivalent independent experience. PhD for teaching duties in the MLA program; experience in grants administration. Serve as advocate and primary administrator for the Center, and therefore: 1) Supervise personnel operations in consultation with Human Resources and the Associate Provost. 2) Develop, adhere to, and manage budgets for all programs within the Center, working with appropriate program director, coordinator, and administrative support staff. 3) Provide information to the administration as requested, including biennial assessment and IE reports to the Associate Provost. 4) Adhere to all policies related to University Center operations and administration. 5) Serve as University representative to the UNC Graduate Council, the NC Council of Graduate Schools, and the Council of Southern Graduate Schools and attends meetings and conferences as scheduled. 6) Ability to coordinate needs assessments, market studies, and both formal and informal focus groups/surveys as needed to identify future programming and to identify programs that no longer serve a community/regional need or no longer align with university strategic plan; provide ongoing collaboration with university and community constituencies to identify, develop, implement, and promote graduate and continuing education programs that meet area needs. 7) Demonstrate experience serving on community boards and university committees that build relationships between constituencies that impact graduate and continuing education. 8) Demonstrate experience in coordinating all facets of a symposium, conference, or meeting that brings together university and community constituencies as part of the Center s mission. 9) Coordinate public relations for graduate and continuing education programs. 10) Demonstrate knowledge of coordinating grants activity, identifying grant opportunities, assisting faculty with the grant application process; ability to facilitate and supervise tracking of grant approval process.

5 Work schedule and hours: Typical hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some evenings and weekends as needed to meet the needs of the department. Job Functions Serve as advocate and primary administrator for the Center. Provide leadership for and collaborate with the Center s staff to develop, manage, and provide strategic planning for AGC programs. 1) Host graduate degree programs. 2) Graduate-level certificate programs 3) Distance and online education programs. 4) Teacher training programs, including lateral entry, substitute teacher training, and the Advanced Placement Institute. 5) Test preparation programs, including LSAT, GRE, SAT, and Test Proctoring. 6) The Great Smokies Writing Program. Essential Job Functions: Communicate with campus constituencies on a regular basis about curricular and related programs within AGC in ways that promote faculty and student involvement. 1) Identify faculty with expertise to teach in AGC offerings and to participate in projects. 2) Identify opportunities for faculty to participate in grant writing activity to promote Center programming and to advance the University mission. 3) Identify students through recruitment and outreach activities. Seek programming and revenue-generation opportunities to facilitate the Center s goals and sustainability, while advancing the University s mission. 1) Work with graduate programming administrators at other UNCsystem schools and institutions of higher education to identify graduate programs to host at AGC. 2) Continuing to develop and expand relationships with administration and leadership at partner institutions and agencies, including, but not limited to, Western Carolina University, Appalachian State University, North Carolina State University, East Carolina University, the City of Asheville and Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County and Buncombe County Schools, NC Department of Corrections, the Western Regional Service Alliance, Mission Hospitals, and others with which UNC Asheville has current and ongoing collaborations. 3) Conducting needs assessments in local and regional communities to respond to our area s higher education, distance education, and continuing education needs. 4) Working with the director of the MLA Program, the Associate Provost, and interested faculty to develop graduate-level curriculum at UNC Asheville, including new certificate programs; and working with the director of the MLA Program to provide budgetary, administrative and operational support, as necessary.
