2 Middle School Course Guide Can be found on the district webpage The Middle School Course Guide provides you with information about Humble ISD s policies and procedures and describes the different courses offered at the middle school level.

6 Placement Placement has been completed by teachers based upon their recommendations for continued student success When the selection card comes home on January 23rd If you wish to make a change from Pre-AP to On-Level, please make the change on the card and sign If you wish to make a change from On-Level to Pre-AP, please contact the teacher to discuss the change you would like to see.

7 PreAP Note: If you choose a PreAP class for the school year, and begin the year in that class, you will only be allowed to drop a PreAP class at the 3 week progress report and the 6 week progress report with approval.

12 Getting a Head Start Several electives are offered to 8th graders that earn high school credit. In high school, you must earn 26 credits to graduate. Credits are earned by successfully completing the course. The grade you make in these classes will be included on your high school transcript. Remember your pathways and how they tie into the endorsements!

15 Spanish I Upon completion, students earn high school credit. Students are required to have 2 credits of the same foreign language in order to graduate. Prerequisites: Intro to Spanish or an 85 in Language Arts

16 French I Upon completion, students earn high school credit. Students are required to have 2 credits of the same foreign language in order to graduate.

17 German I Class taken at KHS 1st period Transportation to KHS not provided Transportation from KHS to RMS will be provided by bus Upon completion, students earn high school credit. Students are required to have 2 credits of the same foreign language in order to graduate. THIS COURSE FIGURES INTO GPA.

18 Physical Education One semester of physical education is recommended State law requires middle school students complete 4 semesters of PE P.E. uniforms - $20.00 Students are given a P.E. locker to store their uniform, shoes, deodorant, & towel P.E. variety of activities during the year Soccer Bowling Shuffleboard Softball Volleyball Fitness training Flickerball Floor hockey Table tennis Kickball Basketball Football

19 Let s talk about Athletics Athletics lasts the entire school year You are required to dress out in an RMS athletic uniform & appropriate shoes EVERY day Athletics is for those who wish to compete and work hard EVERYDAY. We consider athletics an accelerated-accelerated PE class. The expectations and activity are intense. If you do not make a team, you will be in off season 8th grade athletics begins 7th period and continues until 5p.m.

20 Boys Athletics Football - 1st Semester (athletics all year) There are no tryouts for Football & Track Basketball (can go into in November) You can be in PE and try out for Basketball you will need to move into Athletics if you make the team this may mean a pretty big schedule change. Track - 2nd semester (Spring) * If you are in Athletics and do not make a team, you will stay in Athletics in off- season, which involves lots of conditioning and running.

21 Girls Athletics Volleyball Tryouts are at the beginning of school. Basketball Tryouts are after Volleyball Season is over Track - Off season workouts until Track Season begins after Basketball is over Girls who do not make the volleyball or basketball team will participate in Off-Season Track.

22 What about Cross Country and Soccer? Both are UIL sports and available to both boys and girls Neither are part of the athletic period Cross Country occurs in August and September and takes place before school Soccer occurs in April and May and takes place after school

23 Off Campus PE Requires at least 5 hours of training, Monday-Friday Students will select an additional elective in place of their school PE class. There is an application process in place, going through the district PE office. Processing requests for Off Campus PE for the upcoming school year is recommended prior to the end of this year.

24 Cheerleading Mandatory Parent Meeting Jan. 31 at 5:00pm in the library. Parents MUST attend. You must attend Cheer Clinic on February 21st and 22nd Mock Tryout is February 28 Tryouts are March 1st and 2nd If you make the cheerleading squad, you will be required to take one semester of Cheer Training which counts as one semester of PE.

25 Longhorn Dance Team Parent meeting is April 16th at 5 Tryouts are April 30th - May 4th If you make LDT, you will be required to take one semester of dance which can count as one semester of PE. Spring Show is April 27 Come see what LDT has been working on!

26 Reading and Math Strategies If a student was not successful on the STAAR test, the student will be required to take Reading or Math Strategies. Strategies will last for the entire year. Strategies class will be scheduled in place of an elective.

27 Electives Note: Elective classes are planned for schedules based on course card choices, therefore, schedule changes are not always able to be accommodated the next year.

31 Verification Sheets Verification Sheets will be sent home prior to the end of the year. The verification sheet is not the same as a SCHEDULE. The verification sheet is just VERIFYING what you are REQUESTING to have in your schedule. There may be a conflict with another class that you want or the class may be full. This means that one of the backup choices on your green card would be substituted for one of the electives listed on your Verification Sheet. That is why it is SO important to list alternatives.

32 And a message from our friendly school nurse Any student whose immunization is due during the summer OR the first semester of the new school year MUST update the immunization record prior to picking up the back-to-school packet.

33 Annual Online Update Becomes available in August through Home Access. The update MUST be completed prior to Camp Longhorn. Immunization record must be current with the school nurse prior to Camp Longhorn.
