1 GCA School Board Meeting Minutes Open Session, April 18, 2016 The April GCA Open and Abbreviated (due to an extended Closed Session) Board Meeting was called to order by President Justina on Monday, April 18, 2016, at 6:00 p.m.in the fireside room. Roll call was answered by Brian Berry, Woody Rose, Justina Nadolson, Pam Kemmenoe, Vickie Pound, Mark Law, Nory Duncan, Tom Pound, and Bonni McQueen. Administrators Tim Barrett, Jeff Dalzell, and Erin Muth were in attendance. Prayer and Devotion: Jeff Dalzell opened the meeting with his devotion on keeping God first on the list, seeing and following God in all we do and continued with prayer for the success of GCA. Woody will provide the devotion and prayer for the May board meeting. Approval of Minutes: Brian made a motion the March Open Board meeting minutes be approved. Woody seconded; and all were in favor. These minutes will be posted on the GCA web site. Votes and Actionable Items from closed meeting on March 14, 2016, to be entered into the record: a. Staff contracts will be reviewed by Tim Barrett, Justina Nadolson, and Julie Deibel and brought to the board for approval at the April closed meeting. b. Music Review Committee suggested changes to the policy. The board agreed that the committee should proceed without micromanagement from the board. c. Vote to give a referral fee to GCA families that refer a new kindergarten student. Pam motioned and Woody seconded. All were in favor. Administration will implement a policy. d. Board interviewed for open positions in Vote at the April closed meeting. Financial Report: Treasurer Norris Duncan and Accountant Julie DeibelThe March 2016 Comparative Balance Sheet was reviewed. Cash & equivalents are $896K up 103K over the prior year. Approx. 120K is available for operations. Total assets are up 129K. Total liabilities are up approx. 28K due to deferred revenue and lease liability. Designated assets are up 88K and temporarily restricted assets are up 30K The Profit and Loss Statement was reviewed for 7/1/15-3/31/16 compared to prior year. Tuition is up 59K and State Admin Cost Reimbursement is up 9K. Facilities expense is up 19K. IT expense is up $12K. Payroll expense is up $118K. Net operating income is $77K less than the prior year. Designated and Restricted activity is down approx. 23K. The Profit and Loss statement for 7/1/15-3/31/16 was also reviewed compared to budget. Total operating income of $1,204K is up $34K over budget. Total operating expenses of 1,165K are under budget by $25K. Capital purchases are right on budget thus leaving a Net operating less Fixed Assets of $26,726 which is approx. $59K over budget The Statement of Cash Flows was reviewed in addition to the other reports noted. Pam made a motion these reports be accepted. Tom seconded; and all were in favor.
2 Committee Reports - abbreviated: Development Committee Forest Rose nothing new to report. Education Committee Pam Kemmenoe nothing new to report. Facilities Committee Mark Law nothing new to report. Finance Committee Norris Duncan nothing new to report. Nominating Committee Bonni McQueen nothing new to report. Strategic Plan Review Committee Justina Nadolson nothing new to report. Student Council Report: waived due to abbreviated meeting. Teacher Presentation: waived due to abbreviated meeting.
3 Administrator Reports: a. Jeff Dalzell, Elementary Principal Science Fair K-5 Our kindergarten, first, and second grade students participated in our annual science fair on a small scale this year for the first time. Kindergarten students were led through the process by their teacher, culminating with a presentation judged by Mrs. Laing and her Anatomy students. The hope is that once students have this experience for three years prior to the individual projects beginning in third grade they will be much more prepared. RTI/IEP Four Response to Intervention and Individualized Education Plan meetings were held. Math Olympics East Dayton Christian hosted this year s ACSI Math Olympics. Six of our elementary students placed in the top five for their categories. (Computation and Reasoning) Math Review Mrs. Flavin, our math coach, and I piloted the Bridges curriculum by teaching a unit of study in grades 1-5. Family tours and interviews Twenty-one tours and interviews were conducted with potential families. Students shadowing in elementary Seven potential students shadowed in the elementary. The third quarter ended and grade cards were completed. My wife and I celebrated our 41 st wedding anniversary. Teacher In-Service Teachers were offered three sessions of computer trainings at increased levels of difficulty. K-5 to COSI Our kindergarten through fifth graders and a slew of parents visited the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus. Second graders visited the Cornell School. Our kindergarten through fifth graders endured a week of Terra Nova3 testing. The second round of Kindergarten screening was held on April 13 th. b. Erin Muth Middle/High School Principal Prom was this past weekend, and 80% of the juniors and seniors attended. It was held at Longaberger Country Club, and the theme was the Red Carpet. Students 6-8 participated in the Terra Nova standardized test. All testing has been completed and scores will be returned to the school in late May to mid-june. These scores will be reviewed for class placement, curriculum consideration, and in longitudinal analysis of the overall class dynamics. 9 th grade will be participating in the ACT Aspire next week. These students will be assessed in reading, writing, English, science, and math skills. The results will give each student an expected score range for the ACT.
4 Sophomores and juniors opted to take the ASVAB to utilize as a career assessment. The following week, students participated in an interp, where results were reviewed and received hands-on instruction of the best way to utilize the career exploration software. Students have access to this program for two years. National Honor Society applications were submitted by over 20 students, and the faculty committee met to review each application. Students will be informed later this week of their status, and induction will be the morning of April 25 th. The faculty counsel will be meeting prior to the end of the month to review the procedures, make suggestions on ways to improve the process, and also create a rubric to make the overall process better. Spring sports are under-way and going well. College Credit Plus counseling sessions were held in small groups, and also with individual students. A number of juniors and seniors for the school year are applying for this program. ODE has changed the allocation funding, so we are unsure how many credits each grade level will receive for funding of these classes. Students accepted to the program may also self-pay per ODE if funding is not received. Individual guidance counseling meetings with juniors were completed this month. This class also participated in the pastor mentor program with Pastor Tom, and all students went to lunch with him in the last seven weeks in small groups. Pastor Tom will be meeting with them, as a whole, to discuss insight given to him in small groups and next steps for this possible program option in the future. Spanish 2 ate lunch at a Mexican restaurant and Spanish 4 shared breakfast in a Mexican restaurant. These field trips were planned to have the students use their Spanish skills while at the restaurant. The 8 th grade class went to Caesar State Park to hunt for fossils to reinforce the unit they have been studying in science. Students also individually made rockets and launched them as a part of science class. 9 th grade physical science class is sending four students to the COTC egg drop competition. Earlier in the school year, the class participated as small groups and the top two teams will competing on the 29 th against other students from other schools in the area. Brian Hassel attended ITSCO professional development on the Sphero Robot and we will be reviewing how to implement this as an elective class. We also received ways to integrate through K-12. ireach is this Friday. Please continue to pray for students, chaperones, and the overall event that we may be a blessing to people in our community. c. Tim Barrett - Superintendent Our enrollment stands at 303 currently. Our reenrollment for stands at 264 currently. Twenty new students have been accepted and sent offers. Kindergarten is currently at 19 with a few of those to yet finalize enrollment. Numerous new applications are pending based on interviews, testing and availability.
5 The Pastors Breakfast was held Thursday, March 17. Attendance was less than hoped for; however, some good connections were made. We hope to hold this event earlier next year, closer to the actual opening of enrollment for new students in mid-february. My wife Linda, and I attended the Integrate Conference hosted by Summit Ministries last week in Franklin, Tennessee. We came away with some solid resources for integrating Christian worldview into our classrooms, K-12. Our children and grandchildren see today s world through a whole different set of lenses than we do. We as individuals, and collectively as Granville Christian Academy, can help them increasingly see things through the lens of the Word of God. GCA Water Tests SAFE - The Village Water Department has tested several locations throughout GCA and the Church and has only found nearly undetectable levels of lead here at our campus. The results are well below the recommended levels to be considered safe according to the water department School Calendar is in process. Will be completed shortly and distributed to the GCA community. Remember to save the date - Let's Celebrate Mr. Dalzell - SAVE THE DATE!!! Join us on Thursday May 19th from 5:00-7:00 PM (There will be a short program at 6 pm.) for a Farewell Reception in the Worship Center. More details to follow. ireach - Friday, April 22 Our annual ireach event/experience is next Friday. PLEASE be in prayer for all involved, those serving and those being served, that our Lord Jesus would sovereignly work His redemptive purposes in all their lives. OLD BUSINESS: a. Update on Google calendar for school waived due to abbreviated meeting. b. Status of appointment with Granville Village regarding modular Tim reported that he has been working with Jeff McInturff, who had worked four years ago with the school on the application for the modular. An extension cannot be applied for and a strategy is to be developed and upgrades in the landscaping around the modular before Jeff approaches the village for approval. c. Procedures for school fund-raising approval waived due to abbreviated meeting. d. Plans for Kindergarten recruitment Tim reported there are currently 19 solid enrollments and flyers were sent to area preschools and churches in the county. e. Update on intent letters for faculty and staff Tim reported he had no concerns, but has not received all intents yet. f. Procedures for past due balances - Tim reported this will be worked on for the next school year. g. Superintendent update regarding deadline changes for enrollment Tim reported that todate 264 applications had been completed and paid, and May 2 nd, is the deadline for full payment/registration. NEW BUSINESS: None President Justina adjourned the meeting. The next open board meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 16th th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Worship Center.
