5 , 2017 Monitoring For Meaning During Guided Reading Jan Richardson says to always consider your first focus while listening to a student read to be selfmonitoring. There are two non-verbal cues that she suggests doing if a student ignores errors that make sense and disrupt meaning. One suggestion is for the teacher to put his or her thumb up when the student is making sense and then put their thumb down when the student isn t. Eventually, to transfer responsibility for monitoring, have the student do it with the teacher. The second nonverbal cue is using a sticky note or notecard that says Make Sense. Place the card in front of the student. If the student ignores meaning, don t say anything, just point to the card. When the student stops, rereads or selfcorrects, draw a star on the sticky note. Students enjoy seeing how many times they are able to monitor on their own by the number of stars on their card. Richardson suggests using verbal cues as well. If a student ignores errors that disrupt the meaning, wait until the student finishes the sentence and say, Are you right? Did that make sense? Ask the student to reread and find the error. Avoid pointing out the mistake. The student must find the mistake before he or she can fix it. A final option is to give specific praise. When a student monitors, smile and say, I like the way you noticed that didn t make sense. Use praise even if he or she doesn t solve the problem. It is a reminder that they need to be listening while reading. What's New in EDGE? (EACS High Ability Education) Strategy of the Week: Personal Analogies As we work with students on concepts, it is always good for them to build connections between their prior knowledge and their new knowledge. One quick way to do this is an exit slip at the end of a class period by asking students to create a personal analogy. For example, an exit slip could read, "When I was learning today, I felt like a/an, because." You could also do this activity as a team building activity or "brain break" and ask students to make a personal analogy such as, "Today I feel like a/an, because." This is a great way to get students thinking outside the box as well! Questions? 7 Francine's Friends Mobile Mammography Unit is returning to EACS. This is a wonderful and convenient service offered to EACS and to our community by Parkview Hospital and the Breast Diagnostic Center. Parkview recommends women have an annual mammogram beginning at age 40. Women 35 and older, who are not experiencing any problems with their breasts, can get a screening mammogram on the coach. All participants must have a family physician as the screening report is sent to the physician. For participants that have insurance, their insurance company will be billed. For those that have EACS Group Health Insurance, Mammograms will be considered as a wellness benefit, covered at 100%. Please bring a photo ID and your insurance card. NO ONE will be turned away for inability to pay. Francine s Friends has funding available and a donation toward the cost of the mammogram is welcome screening schedule: January 16 (Tuesday) Paul Harding Jr/EAU January 19 ( Friday) New Haven High School February 2 (Friday) Prince Chapman February 8 (Thursday) Cedarville February 14 (Wednesday) New Haven Middle March 26 (Monday) Leo Jr/Sr High April 16 (Monday) Woodlan K 12 Campus May 4 (Friday) Heritage K 12 Campus Appointments may be scheduled in by calling (260)
8 Our Mission: To improve student outcomes. Compliance: Specially Designed Instruction Box - This box should detail what staff will do to address the documented need. How are you teaching the skill listed in the goal? Example: James will receive small group instruction that includes redirectives, hierarchy cueing system, and modeling of age appropriate verbal language skills. As we come off of the first of two due process hearings, it s a good reminder to staff that any with a student s name is considered discoverable in legal matters BE CAREFFUL WHAT YOU PUT IN . GOAL SAMPLES Given a binder with folders for each class, the student will organize class materials in the correct folder with 80% accuracy 3 out of 4 weeks. Given an assessment on IEP components, the student will be able to identify their IEP accommodations with 80% accuracy 4 out of 5 probed trials. If you have questions regarding goals, copy and paste the Google link and Joni Schmalzried from INSTRC will provide feedback. Her plan is to check the document every Friday and give feedback by Monday. kcgufrf7osq0tzru8z_e9mxm5y2hiily/edit?ts=59 d79535 PD Opportunities: Online Modules Trauma Informed Care 11/10 Teachtown webinar 11/28 (am) The Indiana Center on Teacher Quality (ICTQ), a State Professional Development grant funded by the IDOE, has developed free, online training modules on topics that may be of interest to teachers, paraprofessionals & administrators.this month s features include: Universal Design for Learning & Co- Teaching. Transition Tip: This is a reminder when completing the Transition portion of the IEP that you must summarize the assessments into three separate categories and reference the assessment given within each category: Employment, Education, and Independent Living. If the student does not need an IL goal, make sure you include the assessment title and date in the cite evidence box or the IEP will not be compliant. Your transition summaries must include information relating to the students post-secondary goals or your IEP will not be compliant. ASD Team AWESOME OUTCOMES Our IREACH program hosted a presentation with INSOURCE focusing on self-advocacy. (See pics below) WHS hosted the Behavioral Strategies Webinar held on 10/30 for the entire staff and had several staff members participate. Karen Hathaway s Life Skills recycling group made the front page of the HHS newspaper The Structure! The group is working to recycle enough materials to earn a recycled bench to place in the school. Stay tuned! Regina Troyer has created a "Homework Office" that supports Executive Function Skills. (See picture below or check out CANVAS for more details) Did You Know? People who have experienced trauma have heightened states of arousal which impact how they process sensory input. Symptoms of trauma often resemble sensory processing disorders especially with increased sensitivity to light, sounds, touch and movement. Understanding and incorporating sensory friendly classrooms will not only help your students with sensory need but also those who have experienced trauma. 9 East Allen County Schools 403(b) Plan Universal Availability Notice 2018 This notice provides important information regarding the 403(b) plan in which you are eligible to participate (the plan ). You may want to take the opportunity to either (1) begin making pre-tax and/or Roth 403(b) elective deferral contributions or (2) review your current elections and decide if you want to make changes. Before making any initial elections or changes, you should be sure to consult the written plan and any other materials provided to you that explain the terms of the plan. Specific information about the 403(b) Plan can be found at: plan_-_mass_mutual When can I enroll? You are eligible to enroll immediately upon your date of hire. You may choose your initial elective deferral rate by completing the appropriate application and any other necessary forms including a Salary Reduction Agreement at initial enrollment. This contribution will continue unless it is modified or revoked in the future. Return all completed forms to EACS Payroll Specialist (Nancy Vandell). Can I change or stop my elective deferral contributions? You may change your elective deferral contributions, once per pay period, during the plan year. You are permitted to revoke your election at any time during the plan year. Please contact EACS Payroll Specialist (Nancy Vandell) for further instructions. When are my elective deferral contributions effective? After completing the enrollment requirements, your elective deferral contributions will begin on the next pay period or as soon as administratively possible. What is the maximum amount that I can contribute? The Internal Revenue Code limits the annual contributions you can make to a 403(b) plan and the limits are adjusted each year. The 2017 & 2018 limits are as follows: Elective deferral $18, $18, Age 50 catch-up $6, $6, years of service catch-up $3,000.00* $3,000.00* * The 15 years of service catch-up contribution applies before the age 50 catch-up contribution and is based on a formula that takes into account all past contributions to the plan and employee s total years of service to East Allen County Schools. The maximum allowable for the 15 years of service catch-up may be lower than this maximum. Whom do I contact for additional information? To learn more about 403(b) plans, please visit and search for Publication 571. If you have any questions about how the plan works or your rights and obligations under the plan, please contact your plan administrator at: Contact name: Kirby Stahly Extension: address: kstahly@eacs.k12.in.us
