Introducing Henley Business School

On 1 August 2008

Henley Management College merged with the University of Reading to create a new world-class business school, Henley Business School. The merger brings together two highly complementary business education offerings. Henley Management College has long been a leading international provider of executive education and MBA programmes, while the University of Reading Business School has been a world leader in international business research, with centres of excellence in business education for the financial and real estate markets. Together they will constitute one of the largest and best business schools in Europe, offering a full range of programmes and a powerful combination of academic research and thought leadership. Henley Management College Founded in 1945, the oldest business school in the UK World s third largest supplier of MBA education One of the first UK business schools to receive triple accreditation (AMBA, EQUIS, AACSB) Full-time MBA ranked 2 in UK, 5 in Europe, 10 in world (EIU 2007) Executive education ranked 1 in UK, 5 in Europe for new skills and learning (FT 2007) Ranked 1 in UK, 5 in Europe for participant quality on open programmes (FT 2007) University of Reading One of the world s top 200 universities (THE 2008 ranking 180) One of UK s 10 most research-intensive universities Ranked 1 in the world for overall student satisfaction for overseas students (i-graduate 2008) University of Reading Business School One of only 8 schools 5-rated for business and management research in both of the last two RAEs. Ranked 1 in UK for student satisfaction on management programmes, 2005 and 2006 (NSS) Ranked 5 in UK for career prospects, management programmes (The Guardian) 1

Our vision at Henley has always been to be a world leader in the delivery of business and management education for organisations and individuals on the global stage. Combining our resources with those of the University of Reading will create a business school with the strengths and capabilities to meet this ambition, and rise to the challenges of twenty-first-century management and leadership development. Paul Walsh CEO, Diageo plc and Chair, Henley Business School Strategy Board 2

The University of Reading is an ambitious institution and this will be a transforming step in further developing our world-class reputation for teaching, research and enterprise. The new business school will have enviable core strengths and the potential for truly innovative offerings to students, academics and corporate clients alike. Gordon Marshall Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading 3

A distinctive proposition As a full-service business school, we offer a wide range of programmes, from undergraduate to board level, from management to finance, from classroom teaching to mentoring, facilitation, team building and consulting. To every student, programme member, and client organisation we bring the same commitment to service and attention to detail, addressing the needs of those with whom we work, helping them to grow as leaders and future leaders. Our reach and scale are global, and run across all sectors. Of our 7,000 degree programme participants at any one time, over half are based outside the UK. Our teaching is delivered, both face-to-face and through distance learning technologies, across five continents. Through our tailored corporate programmes we help to grow the capabilities of a broad range of major European, American and Asian corporations. Combining the traditions of Reading and Henley, our faculty includes some of the world s most distinguished research academics and some of its most innovative practically-oriented thought leaders, working together to enhance learning and add value, combining academic rigour with practical insights and relevance to the needs of tomorrow. 4

Our distinctive approach At Henley Business School we always put the learner first. This means understanding what is appropriate for different stages of life, different levels of experience, and different individuals, and building close collaborations with partner organisations to fully understand and respond to their needs. In this context, our learning approach is pragmatic. Our learning processes combine both intellectual and experiential learning, both skills and knowledge, both personal and, where appropriate, organisational development. For experienced managers in particular, we know that learning comes as much from working with other managers as from working with faculty, and we build and support our learning teams accordingly. We are committed to innovative learning approaches, always looking to blend interactive, face-to-face learning with state-of-the-art virtual environments, independent study and guided experiential learning, putting skills into practice and reflecting on them, to best effect for our different learning communities. 5

Henley Business School combines the values and the collective thought leadership of two highly respected institutions each a leader in its field for over 60 years and we are justifiably proud to continue in the future as one of the very few global business schools to maintain triple accredited status. Together we offer a compelling proposition pragmatic and relevant programmes supported by the highest standards of rigorous academic research. Whilst our reach and scale are genuinely global, our service and attention to detail will always be personal to the needs of each student and to the organisations with which we work. Henley Business School will develop managers and leaders to make the right choices; right for themselves, right for their organisations and right for the wider communities in which they exist. Professor Chris Bones Dean of Henley Business School Our distinctive values Whatever the area of application our approach is underpinned by our core values: The central importance of the learners and their continuing development. The importance of character and integrity in a manager as well as capability. The importance of wealth creation for society as a whole and of building management and leadership as a contribution to the wealth and welfare of society. 6

The ICMA Centre The ICMA Centre is the premier institution in Europe for undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education tailored to the capital markets industry. Established in 1991 with funding provided by the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) in Zurich, the Centre is housed in a purpose-built modernist building with state-of-the-art facilities including two dealing rooms using software similar to those found in major investment banks. The ICMA Centre delivers: Strong links with global finance companies as well as trade and professional organisations. Industry standard facilities including terminals running the latest Reuters, Bloomberg and Datastream products. The successful integration of theory and practice integral to all programmes. Unique access to dealing room facilities. Using a unique ILE (Interactive Learning Environment), the first finance MSc to be offered on a distance-learning basis. A comprehensive suite of degrees in finance and investment banking, including CFA and PRMIA accreditation and new MSc programmes in fast developing areas such as Compliance and Islamic Finance. A wide range of executive programmes including ICMA IFID, FINRA Regulation and Compliance Programmes and PRMIA and PRM Training. Academic research at the ICMA Centre focuses on quantitative finance, market microstructure, fund management, risk management and regulation. The Centre also regularly provides research and consultancy services to financial institutions and government agencies. The ICMA Centre provided an exciting and interactive environment which gave me the knowledge and skills used in the markets. I am sure the course secured my position in a top tier investment bank, which will expand my future possibilities. Oliver Wheble Senior Financial Analyst, JPMorgan Chase. 8

School of Real Estate & Planning Forty years of leadership positions the School of Real Estate & Planning as the largest and most prestigious in the UK for research and teaching in this area. The School is consistently ranked in the top 3 in both the UK and Europe, and was recently ranked as the leading Real Estate centre in Europe by the US-based Urban Land Institute. It is also the only major UK real estate school to be located within a business school, and this reflects its close and longstanding collaborative relationships with industry and the professions. These relationships inform its teaching and research, and help make it one of the most influential actors in public policy debates in its field. With a high entry tariff and almost 100% graduate employment, the School s BSc programmes are amongst the strongest at Reading, preparing students for careers across the property sector, and increasingly in banks and financial services. The MSc programmes, focused on real estate finance and investment, combine cutting edge research with state-of-theart practice. The School is a global leader in the provision of executive education to the real estate and related professions. Research at the School embraces both pure academic and applied practice perspectives, and excels in combining the two. The School conducts significant research for government and industry, and many of the faculty are well known authorities with a strong media presence. Reading is one of our principal suppliers of graduates each year and we consistently find that the students are of the highest calibre. We have a significant number of Reading alumni at all levels of our business. Anthony Doyle Director, DTZ Research centres affiliated to the School of Real Estate & Planning: The Centre for Real Estate Research The Centre of Planning Studies

School of Economics The School of Economics built its reputation in the 1960s and 1970s as the world s premier centre of international business research. The John H. Dunning Centre for International Business, which operates across the Schools of Economics and Management, still leads the world in its field today with an unequalled array of internationally distinguished professors and innovative young researchers. The School of Economics, however, has evolved into a large, full-range school with particular strengths in institutional economics generally and more specifically in the economics of development, emerging markets and the economics of energy, spatial and housing economics, banking and finance, as well as in core areas of macroeconomics and theoretical and applied econometrics. With 30 core faculty, the School offers a range of undergraduate and MSc programmes, and has a strong doctoral programme. It is also home to the reading Business group, which conducts economic research and consulting for government departments and agencies. Research centres affiliated to the School of Economics The Centre for Euro-Asian Studies The John H. Dunning Centre for International Business (formerly the Centre for International Business and Strategy) The Centre for Institutional Performance The International Centre for Housing and Urban Economics The Centre for Spatial and Real Estate Economics The impact of the Centre for Euro-Asian Studies on training and influencing a whole generation of business leaders and policy makers has been impressive. Dr Martin Raiser Country Manager, The World Bank 10

School of Management The School of Management is the largest constituent part of the Henley Business School, with about 60 faculty on two sites and a full range of activities from BA and BSc to MBA and MSc to DBA and PhD, and from pure academic research to senior executive programmes. At its heart are five thought leadership communities, which bring together the latest in academic research with the latest in practitioner insights and apply them to problems faced by our course members and partner organisations. The five thoughtleadership communities Reputation and relationships Management knowledge and learning Leadership, change and HR Projects, processes and systems Growth, innovation and enterprise From Reading s parkland Whiteknights campus, the School offers a range of BA, BSc and MSc degrees in business, international management, marketing and accounting to a roughly equal mix of UK and overseas students. Also based at Whiteknights are a thriving PhD programme and world-leading research centres in international business and international business history. From the riverside Greenlands campus, it offers the Henley MBA and a range of specialist MSc programmes, together with Henley s prestigious executive programmes and Europe s largest and most renowned DBA programme. As the new Henley Business School takes shape, these activities will increasingly come together and feed and learn from each other, creating a unique and exciting School of Management. Research Centres affiliated to the School of Management include The John H. Dunning Centre for International Business (formerly the Centre for International Business and Strategy) The John Madejski Centre for Reputation The Centre for International Business History The Centre for Institutional Performance The HR Centre of Excellence The Huck Centre of Management Research The Centre for Customer Management Knowledge Management Forum 11

The Henley MBA Specifically designed for the experienced manager, the Henley MBA is different. It delivers integrative thinking, values the team approach and emphasises personal development. The programme is highly practical and recognises that values are as important as value. At any one time over 4000 individuals are studying for a Henley MBA in more than 112 countries. The Henley MBA programme is an intense and rewarding experience. For some it offers new opportunities; for others it hones fitness for senior leadership roles; but for everyone it challenges thinking about business and the practical art of management. MBA programme members work alongside leading international faculty and talented international managers to understand the dynamics of management and business choices. These areas are underpinned with a continuous theme of personal development for the duration of the MBA programme. Known for its supportive culture Henley offers maximum support for MBA programme members, through personal and subject tutors, social media, team work and networking. The Henley MBA comes in three study modes. The flagship Executive Full-time MBA, ranked 10th in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit, prepares experienced, practising managers from across the world for transition to senior leadership roles. The Executive Modular MBA combines intensive study with a full-time job and seeks to maximise the benefits from this combination, with a substantial programme of personal development and in-company projects. The Distance Learning MBA blends e-learning technologies with face-to-face learning to provide a unique and flexible learning experience. My MBA has given me tools that have helped me deliver in many prominent organisations and projects. The Henley MBA has a highly practical approach. At Henley you constantly look at how management principles are applied in the real world. This was great for me. In my working life I ve been able to build on the lessons. Alan Hughes Former Chief Executive of First Direct Bank 12

Corporate education The Corporate Learning Division develops close partnerships with corporate clients to build long-term relationships to work together to co-design, co-create and deliver customised programmes aligned to critical challenges for the future. Making the right things happen from executive development lies in building individual capability linked through to organisational performance. Individual leaders can make a considerable impact on their organisation through improving individual capability. Our Executive Development Programmes develop managers and leaders of and for the future. A range of highly pragmatic and relevant programmes ranging from 3 days to 3 weeks are specifically designed to create impact back in the working environment. Corporate Qualification Programmes are tailored qualification programmes that can be delivered to Masters Level. Using a blend of face-to-face and distance learning these programmes develop deep functional expertise in a commercial context. We are a world leader in the design and delivery of Tailored Corporate Programmes, matching our skills and resources to your organisational needs in a collaborative learning partnership. Many corporate partners currently entrust their management development to Henley Business School. 13
